How to Stream a Church Service on YouTube 24/7 With Prerecorded Sermons

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can keep a church’s YouTube channel live with prerecorded sermons by sending a looping video or playlist through a YouTube-compatible encoder. For a do-it-yourself setup, OBS Studio can loop one sermon file or a playlist, but the computer, internet connection, and encoder must stay running and be monitored. For a cloud option, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube without leaving a computer on at church.

Before you start: confirm the channel can go live

  1. Verify the church’s YouTube channel and check that it has no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement requirements.
  2. Gather the sermon recordings and confirm the church has rights to every element you plan to broadcast, including music, images, performances, and embedded video.
  3. Decide whether the stream needs to be a continuous channel or a single event. If people need a replay, plan a separate recording or upload; a long live broadcast is not a dependable archive.

Choose how to keep the stream running

Method Useful when What to account for
StreamNeo cloud service You want uploaded sermons or a playlist to loop without keeping a church computer online. It streams prerecorded video to YouTube. Check the service’s current terms and storage needs.
OBS on a computer You want local control over scenes, sermon playlists, graphics, or live handoffs. The computer, network, and encoder need ongoing power and monitoring.
Standalone hardware encoder You prefer a dedicated encoding device. YouTube supports this encoder category, but the right model and cost depend on the church’s setup.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists software encoders, standalone hardware encoders, and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video. Compare current pricing, storage, controls, support, rights handling, and terms before choosing a third-party service.

Set up a looping sermon stream with OBS

Loop one sermon file

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
  3. Choose the sermon video file, then enable Loop in the source properties. OBS describes this setting as determining whether the file plays again once playback has completed; see its Media Sources guide.
  4. Play the source in OBS and check that both the picture and sound work as expected.

Loop a playlist

  1. Add a VLC Video Source in OBS.
  2. Create the playlist by adding the sermon video files in the intended order.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist, then play through enough of the list to confirm the order and audio.

A playlist lets multiple messages play in sequence; a single Media Source with Loop repeats only that file. Test transitions and any graphics or scene changes before sending the broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder workflow. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding connection settings in OBS.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not post or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
  5. Check the watch page and confirm the intended audience setting before you begin the live broadcast in Live Control Room.

Run a test in advance, including on desktop and mobile. During operation, watch for picture or sound failures, check the internet connection and encoder, and verify that any local recording is being written correctly. Assign someone to respond if playback or the connection stops; YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing, monitoring stream quality, and keeping a local archive backup.

Protect the sermon replay

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast a poor sole copy of a service or sermon. Keep the source recordings and, if useful, record a local backup; publish individual sermons as regular videos when you want reliable, separately accessible replays. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Check copyright and live-content rights

The church is responsible for having the necessary rights to use all live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights, and for complying with applicable laws. YouTube’s livestream terms place that responsibility on the broadcaster.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream may be replaced by a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated, and copyright strikes may follow. If the church has licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Confirm rights for sermon recordings, worship music, performances, images, and embedded clips before going live. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not show an incoming preview. The channel is not eligible yet, the first-time enablement period has not finished, or the encoder has the wrong stream URL or key. Check channel verification and restrictions, allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement, and copy the current connection details again from YouTube Studio.
The sermon stops instead of repeating. The Media Source’s Loop setting is off, or the playlist loop is not enabled. Enable Loop for a single Media Source or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source, then test playback before going live.
Video plays but the audience hears no sound. The selected file or OBS audio path is not producing the expected audio. Play the source in OBS, check its audio meter and output, and test the watch page before relying on the stream.
The broadcast is interrupted after music or a clip begins. YouTube’s live copyright detection may have identified third-party content. Stop using material unless the church has the necessary rights, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. A license does not guarantee uninterrupted detection behavior.
The 24-hour stream has no full replay. YouTube warns broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use the original sermon files, keep a local recording backup, and publish sermon videos separately if replay access matters.
