To keep a church hymn playlist running on YouTube Live, loop authorized audio or video in an encoder such as OBS, send that encoder output to YouTube, and monitor the stream for playback and copyright warnings. The playlist loop happens in the encoder—not in YouTube. Before broadcasting, make sure the church has permission for both the hymn composition and the specific recording, if one is used.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can play the playlist and run streaming software such as OBS, plus an internet connection that can remain available for the planned stream.
- Local audio or video files that the church created or is authorized to stream. OBS documents support for formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. See OBS Media Sources.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and its stream settings.
- Rights that cover the material being broadcast, including the relevant composition and the particular recording where applicable.
The exact computer and network capacity depend on the files, output settings, and stream duration; there is no universal configuration established for every church setup.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
1. Choose and prepare the files
Decide whether the stream will use audio with a still image, a video playlist, or another authorized visual arrangement. Confirm that permissions cover every song, arrangement or translation, recording, and visual element you plan to include. A license for a congregation’s live performance does not automatically establish permission to play a commercial recording.
2. Add a single file or playlist
- Open OBS and select or create the scene for the hymn stream.
- For one file, add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop in its properties.
- For multiple files, add an OBS VLC Video Source and build its playlist. If the source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed. Configure the playlist to loop, then confirm it restarts after the files finish.
- Add a still image, lyrics, or other visuals only if the church has the necessary rights to use them in the broadcast.
OBS documents the Media Source and VLC playlist options in its Media Sources guide. The playlist’s repeat setting is what restarts the media; YouTube receives the output that OBS sends.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Check playback before connecting
- Play the scene in OBS and listen for the expected audio level and any silence, clipping, or unintended gaps between files.
- Check that the image or video is framed correctly and that any lyrics are legible.
- Let the playlist reach its end once, if practical, to confirm that it restarts as intended.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room. Open the stream settings and obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the connection details as prompted. If using a custom server option, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel. Do not put it in a public description, screenshot, or shared document.
- Start streaming from OBS. Return to YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the preview and stream status to show that the signal is arriving.
- Check the preview, audio, and any dashboard alerts. Start the public broadcast from the Live Control Room when the preview is correct and you are ready to go live.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean a stream is guaranteed to stay live indefinitely; plan to supervise the encoder, connection, and YouTube dashboard for the full session.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Check both the song and the recording
A hymn’s underlying composition can have different rights from a particular arrangement, translation, or sound recording. A church’s permission to perform a song live does not, by itself, show that a recording can be played from a playlist. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music rights from relevant artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and confirm the scope of the church’s own permissions.

Understand YouTube’s live copyright checks
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. A detected match can lead to a warning, a placeholder replacing the stream, or interruption or termination if the material remains. YouTube also says a licensed rights holder may need to add the church’s channel to its Content ID allowlist; holding a license does not automatically prevent an automated interruption. Check the Live Control Room dashboard and resolve warnings with the rights holder.
For US churches considering CCLI
CCLI describes its US Streaming License as covering online worship services with songs and hymns performed live by church musicians. Its Streaming Plus License extends coverage to authorized master recordings, backing tracks, and multitracks. CCLI’s current US product pages state that its repertoire covers more than 450,000 songs and hymns; that is CCLI’s own repertoire statement, not an independent count. Verify the specific song, licensee, territory, and recording against current terms. CCLI says Streaming Plus recording permission generally concerns audio; video use usually requires permission from the copyright owner, with a page-noted exception for SongSelect Lyric Videos for Streaming Plus license holders during a live stream.

If the church uses a CCLI license, CCLI recommends including the Church Copyright License and Streaming License numbers in the stream description. Confirm that the licensee name and planned use match the license terms.
Creator Music is not a live-stream license
YouTube says Creator Music currently does not support licensing live content; its permitted track use is for long-form videos rather than live streams. It is not a workaround for clearing hymn playlists on YouTube Live. See YouTube Creator Music help.

Keep the stream running and troubleshoot problems
- The playlist stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled on a single Media Source, or that looping is enabled for the VLC playlist. Confirm the source is still present in the active scene.
- YouTube preview is blank or absent: Confirm OBS is streaming, the selected scene contains the media source, and the stream key and server details match the current YouTube stream settings.
- The preview has no sound: Check that the file itself has audio, the source is not muted in OBS, and the OBS audio meter responds during playback. Recheck the preview before starting the public broadcast.
- YouTube reports a copyright match: Review the warning in Live Control Room, identify the matched material, and contact the relevant rights holder. If the church is licensed, ask whether the channel needs to be added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist.
- The broadcast drops during the service: Check the computer, OBS, and internet connection, then inspect YouTube’s stream status. A local encoder depends on the computer and connection remaining available; the sources do not establish a universal hardware or network fix for every church.
Choose the setup that fits the church
| Decision | Option | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist content | Church-created or otherwise authorized performance/recording | Rights for the composition and the exact recording, plus applicable territory and platform. |
| Encoder | OBS software or a standalone hardware encoder | Whether the existing setup supports local file playback and looping, reliability for the planned duration, and operator familiarity. YouTube identifies both software and hardware encoders as options; a hardware purchase is not established as necessary for this workflow. |
| US music permissions example | CCLI Streaming License for covered live performances; Streaming Plus for eligible authorized recordings and multitracks | Current terms, repertoire, licensee, territory, and whether planned visuals need separate clearance. |
