How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist with Burned-In Subtitles

To stream a 4K 60fps playlist on YouTube with subtitles permanently visible in the picture, build the playlist in OBS Studio with a VLC Video source, compose the subtitles as part of the OBS scene, then send a tested 3840×2160, 60 fps feed to YouTube. Do not assume that turning on a video’s subtitle track burns it into the image: verify the final composite in OBS preview or a test stream.

Burned-in subtitles and YouTube captions are different

Burned-in subtitles are text rendered into the video image. Viewers cannot turn them off, and the text remains visible wherever that image is shown. By contrast, live captions are delivered as a separate caption track that viewers may be able to toggle. YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and captions sent by supported software over HTTP POST; these are caption-delivery options, not proof that subtitle text has been permanently rendered into the picture. In its embedded 608/708 workflow, YouTube currently supports one caption track, although the standard supports up to four. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

For the burned-in result, add rendered subtitle text or graphics above the video in your OBS scene, or render the subtitles into the source video before playback. OBS documents that sources higher in the Sources list appear above lower sources, but the official pages cited here do not specify a method for converting timed subtitle files into an OBS overlay. Likewise, OBS exposes subtitle-track controls for VLC Video sources, but its documentation does not explicitly promise that toggling a track rasterizes the subtitles into the outgoing frame. Inspect the actual output rather than relying on the control’s name.

Prepare the videos and subtitle assets

  • Check that every playlist file has the intended video, audio, subtitle language and timing. Make sure subtitles are legible against both bright and dark scenes.
  • Check the clips’ resolution and frame rate. A 3840×2160, 60 fps stream setting does not make lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source footage native 4K60.
  • Decide how subtitles will become part of the picture: render them into each video beforehand, or provide rendered text or graphics in the OBS scene. The official OBS pages referenced here do not give a verified conversion recipe for timed subtitle files.
  • Make a short representative test that includes movement, dialogue and any transitions. The official guidance does not guarantee seamless transitions between files encoded differently.

Keep a copy of the original files and subtitle assets. If captions must be selectable or accessible as a separate track, configure a YouTube caption workflow as well; a burned-in overlay alone is not a separate caption track.

Build a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear, use the Sources add control, choose VLC Video, and add the media files in playback order.
  3. Enable playlist looping. In the VLC Video source properties, enable Loop Playlist. OBS’s separate Media Source is for an individual file and has a single-file Loop control; use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist.
  4. Set the subtitle presentation. If the source contains a usable subtitle track, the VLC Video source provides subtitle-track controls. If subtitles must be burned in, place the rendered text or graphics source above the video in the Sources list, or use video files with subtitles already rendered into their frames.
  5. Check the composition. Play through scenes with different backgrounds and dialogue. Confirm that subtitles appear at the right time, remain readable and do not cover important content. Verify the video, audio and playlist order in the OBS preview.

For OBS’s source-layer behavior, see the Sources Guide. The cited OBS pages are dated 2022-01-11; the exact labels can vary by version.

Set the YouTube 4K60 encoder output

Set the encoder canvas/output to 3840×2160 and 60 fps, and choose a codec and ingest method supported by both your encoder and YouTube. YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps. Its 4K60 bitrate guidance distinguishes codecs as follows:

Codec YouTube’s 4K60 bitrate guidance
H.264 35 Mbps recommended
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
AV1 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum

These are YouTube Help’s published encoder settings; the page does not state a publication year. The 35 Mbps figure is the H.264 recommendation, not the AV1/HEVC recommendation. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use a bitrate your computer can encode and your connection can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate figures are encoder guidance, not a guarantee of stable delivery on any particular machine or network. Run an upload-speed test and a representative stream test before the event. YouTube’s own instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance also recommends checking representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event.

Choose software or hardware encoding by capability

OBS can send an encoder feed, while YouTube also describes standalone hardware encoders as an option. The relevant choice is the encoder that can reliably produce your selected 4K60 codec and protocol while your network sustains the bitrate. The sources cited here do not validate any particular encoder model, so confirm the exact device’s codec, resolution, frame-rate and protocol support before buying or configuring it.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live

  1. Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. Use the stream URL and key from YouTube’s setup in the encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
  3. Start with a test. Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health before making the stream public. Inspect subtitle timing and legibility, the complete video frame, audio, motion and playlist behavior, including the transition between files.
  4. Monitor the live stream. Watch stream health and audio/video quality during the event. A computer or network that passed a brief test may still fail during a longer broadcast.

YouTube’s live streaming tips cover setup, preview and monitoring.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and it automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams. It warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube’s archive as the only copy for a longer broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See Archive live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube playlist live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS installation or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. For this article’s 4K60 workflow, note that StreamNeo streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. Burned-in subtitles must already be part of the uploaded video if you need them permanently visible in the image.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
