You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio feed from a DigitalOcean Droplet by looping a playlist through an encoder, sending that encoder’s audio/video output to YouTube with the stream’s ingestion details, and connecting the incoming feed to a live broadcast. The Droplet can stay on when your own computer is off, but this is a workflow—not a tested configuration or a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime. You must also monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, budget for outbound data, and confirm that you have rights to stream every recording continuously.
How the Droplet-to-YouTube setup works
The encoder and the YouTube broadcast are related but distinct. A live stream is the incoming feed sent by the encoder; a live broadcast is the viewer-facing event. YouTube documents 24/7 live feeds as a use case and describes using an ongoing stream with a broadcast. See YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams.

- Prepare a playlist and visual. Arrange audio files you are licensed to use. A radio feed also needs an audio/video output; that can include a static image or a visualizer, depending on your encoder setup.
- Run an encoder on the Droplet. It reads the playlist, produces a continuous audio/video feed, and sends it to YouTube. The exact encoder software and commands depend on your files and operating system; this workflow does not establish a tested command or a universally sufficient Droplet size.
- Send the feed to YouTube. Configure the encoder with the ingestion address and stream name/key supplied for the YouTube stream.
- Connect and monitor the broadcast. Associate the incoming stream with a live broadcast in YouTube’s live tools, verify that the preview and stream health are acceptable, and keep an eye on both the encoder and the YouTube connection.
Prepare YouTube’s stream and broadcast
Keep the stream key private
YouTube’s LiveStreams resource documents ingestion details such as the ingestion type, primary and backup addresses, stream name, resolution, frame rate, and health status. Use the details YouTube provides for your stream rather than guessing an endpoint. Treat the stream name/key as a secret: it identifies the destination, so anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See the LiveStreams API reference.
Prefer a secure RTMPS connection
RTMPS is RTMP over SSL. YouTube documents a valid RTMPS endpoint using port 443 and recommends RTMPS as a secure option for low-latency streaming. Use the endpoint and connection details shown for your stream, and make sure the Droplet can make outbound connections to it. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the protocol requirements.

Connect the incoming feed to the viewer-facing event
Creating or selecting the stream does not by itself mean viewers have a live broadcast to watch. In YouTube’s live workflow, connect the feed to the intended broadcast and verify the preview before starting or scheduling it. For a continuous channel, plan how you will handle the current broadcast and any later broadcast that uses the continuing feed; YouTube describes this stream/broadcast distinction in its broadcast and stream guide.
Configure the encoder for a stable feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the baseline, then test with representative audio and motion before relying on the feed. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for viewers’ devices, but that does not remove the need to send a valid, consistent source stream. Its recommendations are platform guidance, not results of a test of a particular Droplet or encoder.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Protocol and video: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 with format-specific constraints. Check its current compatibility notes for the chosen codec.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Frame rate and keyframes: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its stereo recommendation is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps; for 5.1 audio it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
- Resolution and bitrate: Match the encoder to the visual format and consult YouTube’s current table. For example, the guidance lists H.264 720p at 30 or 60 fps at a recommended 8 Mbps, and H.264 1080p at 30 fps at 14 Mbps. Those are YouTube’s listed recommendations for those profiles, not a claim that every radio stream needs that much video bandwidth. A static image or simple visualizer may involve less motion, but do not label a lower bitrate an official YouTube recommendation unless the current table supports it.
Settings and supported formats can change. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring the encoder. Test the complete chain—playlist playback, audio levels, video output, connection, and YouTube preview—before leaving it unattended.
Secure and operate the DigitalOcean Droplet
Start with a restrictive server setup
DigitalOcean recommends setting up SSH-key access, a non-root account with sudo privileges, monitoring, backups where appropriate, and a cloud firewall. Its baseline firewall rules restrict inbound traffic to SSH and permit outbound connections. For this encoder-to-YouTube design, the expected streaming connection is outbound, so do not open inbound streaming ports unless your chosen architecture actually requires them. Follow DigitalOcean’s recommended production Droplet setup.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Plan for restarts and health checks
A Droplet is only one component of the chain. The playlist process can stop, the encoder can exit, the Droplet can lose connectivity, or YouTube can report a problem with the incoming feed. Decide how you will detect each failure and restart or investigate the relevant process. Monitor both the Droplet and YouTube’s stream health; a server that is powered on does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast. The cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed-uptime configuration.
Estimate outbound transfer before choosing a plan
A continuous stream sends data out of the Droplet all month. Estimate transfer from the configured bitrate before selecting a plan: as a rough planning calculation, bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 gives approximate decimal gigabytes per hour, before protocol overhead. Multiply by the hours you expect to stream, then compare the result with your team’s available allowance and other Droplet usage. This calculation is an estimate, not a DigitalOcean bill prediction.

DigitalOcean says Droplet transfer allowances are pooled across the team, inbound transfer is free, and additional outbound data transfer is charged at $0.01 per GiB under its pricing documentation, last verified 2026-08-25. The included allowance depends on the selected plan and the team’s other Droplets; there is no single allowance that applies to every setup. DigitalOcean says its transfer usage and projection dashboard updates daily. Check DigitalOcean Droplet pricing for current plan terms and charges.
Confirm music rights before going live
Verify that you have permission for the exact recordings and the intended continuous livestream use. A license for personal listening, downloads, or another use does not by itself establish that a 24/7 YouTube broadcast is covered. Check the terms for each catalog and recording, including any applicable livestream, territory, duration, and platform restrictions. No general music-library subscription should be assumed to include this use unless its terms say so.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a 24/7 feed
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no feed | The encoder is stopped, cannot reach YouTube, or has incorrect ingestion details. | Check that the playlist and encoder are running, confirm the supplied endpoint and stream name/key, and verify outbound connectivity. Use the RTMPS endpoint and port 443 where configured. |
| The live preview reports poor health | The encoder output may not match YouTube’s supported settings or may be unstable. | Review codec, CBR, keyframe interval, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and audio settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Test representative content and check stream health again. |
| The feed plays but audio or video is missing | The playlist, encoder’s input mapping, or audio/video output may be incomplete. | Test a representative playlist item and confirm the encoder is producing both the intended audio and video before reconnecting the broadcast. |
| The feed stops after a process or server interruption | The encoder or playlist process may not have resumed after failure. | Check process and Droplet monitoring, identify what stopped, restart it, then verify that YouTube receives a healthy feed. Plan and test recovery rather than assuming it is automatic. |
| Unexpected transfer charges or depleted allowance | The actual bitrate, duration, or other team Droplet usage may exceed the estimate. | Compare configured bitrate and streaming hours with the team’s pooled allowance and review DigitalOcean’s usage/projection dashboard and current pricing. |
