Build and test the playlists first: independently looping lists with different total durations will cycle out of sync. Keep the VPS process supervised and plan for reconnects; no setup can be assumed to guarantee uninterrupted YouTube availability.
What you need before starting
- A VPS where you can install and run FFmpeg. There is no universal VPS size: requirements depend on whether FFmpeg can pass through your media or must transcode it, as well as the output resolution, bitrate, disk use, and provider limits.
- Separate video and audio files, organized into playlists. You must inspect the actual files to determine whether they can be joined as-is or need normalization.
- A YouTube channel able to go live, plus the active RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room or provided by the LiveStreams API.
- A way to supervise the FFmpeg process, monitor the stream, and restart it if the VPS or connection fails.
Prepare the video and audio playlists
Inspect the files
Inventory the video and audio files separately. Check each file’s codec, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and duration, and test that it plays correctly. Compatibility depends on the specific files; do not assume that files with similar names or extensions have matching streams or formats.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. If the files differ in ways that prevent this, use an FFmpeg encoding and filter workflow to normalize them before relying on unattended playback. FFmpeg distinguishes concat-demuxer joining from filter-based concatenation when re-encoding is needed; consult its concat FAQ for the relevant method.
Create a concat list for each track
Make one text file for the video playlist and another for the audio playlist. For example, video-list.txt could contain:

file '/media/audio/track-02.mp3'Use paths that exist on the VPS and quote paths containing spaces or special characters appropriately. These example lists do not make incompatible media compatible; inspect and, if needed, normalize the files before using them.
Decide how the two playlists should repeat
There are two common schedules, and they produce different results:

- Independent loops: the video list repeats after its total duration, and the audio list repeats after its own. If their durations differ, the relationship between the picture and soundtrack changes at each cycle. This is suitable only when that drift is intended.
- Paired schedule: define which audio belongs with each video item or video sequence, then prepare matching segments or a deliberately synchronized schedule. This is the better choice when specific tracks must stay with specific visuals.
Do not treat two unrelated lists as synchronized just because they start together. Check the end of each item and each playlist cycle for gaps, abrupt cuts, or unwanted changes in pairing.
Combine both inputs and send one stream to YouTube
Get the current RTMPS credentials
YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; its documented RTMPS connection uses port 443. YouTube Help describes it this way: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Obtain the active ingest address from Live Control Room or the LiveStreams API; do not rely on a copied static endpoint. Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, published command, or log that others can access. Limit access to the VPS configuration that holds it.
Use separate inputs, map one video and one audio stream
FFmpeg accepts concat-demuxer inputs and lets you select the video stream from one input and the audio stream from another. The following is a schematic command for independent looping, not a universal copy-and-run command:

-f flv "YOUR_CURRENT_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the example paths and URL with your own. The -map options select the first video stream in input 0 and first audio stream in input 1. The -stream_loop -1 options request repeated input playback, but actual looping and output compatibility depend on the media and FFmpeg build. The command uses stream copy; if the selected codecs or timing are not accepted by the output, remove stream copy and configure appropriate encoding and filters for your files. FFmpeg documents RTMPS among its RTMP protocol variants and uses the FLV muxer in its RTMP output examples; check the installed build’s RTMP protocol documentation and formats documentation before deployment.
To avoid exposing credentials in shell history or process listings, store the ingest URL and key in a protected configuration or secret mechanism supported by your VPS setup. The exact method depends on your operating system and how you supervise FFmpeg.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start FFmpeg with representative media and confirm it remains running across at least one video and audio item boundary.
- Open YouTube’s stream preview and verify that both picture and sound arrive and that the chosen ingest settings are accepted.
- Listen and watch through playlist transitions. Check for missing audio, black frames, silence, timestamp problems, unwanted gaps, and changes in audio/video pairing.
- Test the intended repeat behavior. Confirm whether the lists independently loop or whether a paired schedule is being followed.
- Stop and restart FFmpeg deliberately. Confirm how it obtains the protected credentials and whether playback restarts at the beginning or resumes according to your design.
Do not assume a command is valid for every media file or FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s general documentation describes options and supported components; the output settings must match the source files and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
Keep the VPS stream recoverable
A 24/7 setup needs more than a running FFmpeg command. Use a process supervisor appropriate to your VPS, monitor both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s incoming preview, and decide what should happen after a transient network failure, VPS reboot, or credential change.
FFmpeg documents an RTMP FIFO muxer example configured to attempt recovery after temporary failures in its formats documentation. Treat that as a recovery option to evaluate, not a promise that the stream will never drop. Your supervisor’s restart policy and the behavior you choose for resuming the intended playlist also matter.

Copyright, live-stream eligibility, and reused content
Having the technical ability to loop files does not grant permission to broadcast them. Use video and audio that you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube, and check any license restrictions on continuous or live use. YouTube may apply its policies to material in a live stream; verify current account eligibility and live-stream rules in YouTube Studio and Help before scheduling a long-running broadcast.
A stream made from prerecorded files is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. Repeated or minimally changed material may also raise reused-content or originality concerns for monetization; technical continuity is not a guarantee of eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and the material you plan to use.
