1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run a YouTube Live stream continuously with FFmpeg while preserving the encoded audio and video, but only if your source files, timestamps, output container, and YouTube ingest settings are compatible. Use -stream_loop -1 before a single input to repeat one file, or FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for an ordered playlist of files with matching stream layouts and timing. In both cases, -c copy avoids re-encoding; it does not fix incompatible media.
What “without re-encoding” means
FFmpeg stream copy passes encoded packets through without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. That saves the work of compressing the audio and video again, but FFmpeg still has to mux and transmit the stream, and your computer and network must remain available while it runs. As the FFmpeg documentation explains in its Streamcopy section, stream copy does not decode, filter, or encode the copied stream.
Copying is not a compatibility converter. A target container may not support a source stream or contain the information it needs. Filters such as resizing, frame-rate conversion, or overlays require decoded frames, so using them means encoding the affected video again. If YouTube’s ingest requirements do not match your source, choose compatible files or transcode; -c copy cannot change the codecs or other encoded properties.
Choose the right loop method
| Content | FFmpeg method | When stream copy is plausible |
|---|---|---|
| One video repeated indefinitely | -stream_loop -1 before the input |
The source streams can be sent in a format YouTube accepts. |
| Several videos played in a fixed order | Concat demuxer with a list of inputs | The files have compatible streams and timing characteristics, and the resulting streams are accepted by the output container and YouTube. |
FFmpeg’s input options documentation describes -stream_loop; its concat demuxer documentation describes playlist-style concatenation. Neither method makes arbitrary files interchangeable. Different codecs, stream layouts, or time bases can cause failures, timestamp problems, or rough transitions. Some inputs may need normalization, which is not no-reencode passthrough.

Check the files before building the stream
Inspect every file you plan to use before starting a long broadcast. Record its video and audio codecs, number and order of streams, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and duration. Use FFmpeg’s ffprobe documentation to identify the inspection tool and its options; do not assume a file extension alone tells you whether its contents are compatible.
- Compare the files’ stream layouts and timing characteristics, especially when using the concat demuxer.
- Check for extra audio tracks, subtitles, or other streams. Map the intended video and audio explicitly rather than accidentally passing through an unwanted track.
- Compare each source’s codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, and keyframe cadence with the YouTube ingest profile you intend to use.
- Decide whether a transition between each pair of playlist items is acceptable. A playlist that starts successfully can still encounter trouble at a file boundary.
Set up YouTube Live and check ingest compatibility
- Create or open the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast and selected ingest setup. YouTube’s live-stream setup guide explains entering the URL and key in an encoder. Never publish a real key in a script, screenshot, or article; treat it as a credential.
- Use the recommended secure transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the server URL YouTube provides for the selected setup rather than guessing or substituting an endpoint.
- Match the source to YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval with a 4-second maximum. These requirements still apply when packets are copied: FFmpeg does not change a source’s keyframe spacing, codec, bitrate, or frame rate with
-c copy. - Use a bitrate appropriate to the exact resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published settings list H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 720p30, they list a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not independently measured connection speeds. Leave network headroom, and do not treat a bitrate for one profile as suitable for another. If the source does not meet the selected profile, use different media or accept that encoding may be necessary.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the input path and the endpoint placeholders with your actual file path and the URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private. The example maps the first video and first audio stream; change the mapping only after inspecting the file and confirming which streams you want. The output container and the source streams must be compatible. If FFmpeg rejects a stream or YouTube reports an ingest mismatch, stream copy cannot repair it.

Loop a playlist of compatible files
For multiple videos in a fixed order, prepare a concat-demuxer list, then feed that list to FFmpeg. A basic list uses one file entry per path, for example:
file 'video-one.mp4'
file 'video-two.mp4'
Paths with spaces, quotes, special characters, or different operating-system path conventions may require appropriate quoting or escaping. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer also has safe-path behavior; check its documentation for your paths and local setup rather than assuming this illustrative list works unchanged everywhere.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Here, playlist.txt is the list you created. The -safe 0 option relaxes path restrictions; use it only when you trust the list’s contents. Check FFmpeg’s concat documentation for the safe-path behavior and adapt the list to your environment. -re reads the input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible. Keep the endpoint private, map the intended streams, and confirm the output is accepted by YouTube.

The concat demuxer expects compatible streams and timing characteristics. If files differ in codecs, stream layout, or time base, do not assume -c copy will concatenate them cleanly. You may need to create a consistent set of files in advance or transcode; either approach falls outside a wholly no-reencode live passthrough when it changes the media.
Test the stream and keep it running
- Start with a representative test. Test with media that includes the audio, motion, and playlist transitions you expect in the real broadcast. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate for your channel and workflow.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm that the video and audio appear correctly and that YouTube is receiving the intended profile. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring the stream.
- Watch a file transition. Confirm that FFmpeg moves from one playlist item to the next without errors or an unacceptable interruption. Compatibility at the start of the first file does not prove the next boundary will work.
- Provide upload headroom. YouTube advises that upload capacity exceed the total streaming bitrate. A connection that only just matches the stream rate leaves little room for variation.
- Supervise FFmpeg for a continuous broadcast. Run it under an operating-system service manager or process supervisor, and arrange to notice if the process exits. The exact setup depends on your operating system; stream copy does not restart a stopped process automatically.
- Keep a local recording if the archive matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup. Plan shorter sessions or record locally if you need a dependable replay.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that a stream or format cannot be written | The output container cannot carry a source stream, or the file’s streams are not suitable for the selected output. | Inspect the input streams and output format. Remove unwanted streams with explicit mapping, choose compatible source files, or transcode if necessary. |
| The playlist fails or behaves badly at a file boundary | Inputs have different stream layouts, codecs, time bases, or timing behavior. | Compare every file, test transitions, and make the playlist consistent before relying on it. If that requires normalization, it is not stream-copy-only. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem | The copied source does not match the selected ingest profile, or the connection cannot sustain the total bitrate. | Check codec, audio, CBR, frame rate, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, and upload headroom against YouTube’s settings. Use compatible files or transcode. |
| The stream stops when the computer sleeps, loses power, or disconnects | FFmpeg is running on a machine or connection that is no longer available. | Prevent sleep and monitor power and network availability, or run FFmpeg on a suitable always-on host with process supervision. |
| The long live stream has no complete YouTube replay | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours. | Use shorter sessions if platform archives are important and keep a local recording as backup. |
Costs and practical trade-offs
Stream copy reduces encoding work, but an FFmpeg setup still requires a computer or server to stay on, a stable upload connection, and supervision. No universal minimum computer specification or tested machine is provided, so choose hardware based on the media, sustained network transfer, and operating conditions rather than relying on a universal model recommendation. YouTube’s bitrate figures above are encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular internet plan will remain stable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an FFmpeg computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Your computer does not have to stay on at home.
- Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly service is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube; see StreamNeo pricing and plan details for available billing lengths and payment options.
