This guide covers YouTube setup, a practical Linux/FFmpeg workflow, Mumbai transfer costs, unattended-operation safeguards, and an easier cloud alternative.
What you need before starting
The workflow is: prepare media you have the rights to broadcast, enable YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder on the VPS, and send its output to YouTube. Then test the incoming feed and monitor both YouTube and the VPS process. The official YouTube guidance establishes ingest settings, but does not validate a particular FFmpeg command or promise unattended recovery.

- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A Linux VPS located in Mumbai, with enough disk for your media and enough included outbound transfer for your chosen bitrate.
- A source video or playlist that you are entitled to broadcast.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, plus a process supervisor, logs, disk monitoring, and an alert or recovery plan for unattended operation.
If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, start activation early rather than scheduling the first broadcast around immediate availability. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a broadcast longer than 12 hours.
Choose output settings that fit YouTube and your VPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended advanced settings include 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

H.264 bitrate examples
YouTube’s current recommended H.264 targets include the following. Its full table also gives minimum and recommended ranges for other configurations; consult it for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you select.

Choose the resolution and bitrate your VPS upload connection and transfer allowance can sustain. Matching the source media to the desired output may avoid CPU-heavy transcoding, but whether a particular small VPS can encode reliably depends on its workload and requires testing. Do not assume a low-cost instance can transcode a given source in real time without measuring it.
Estimate the monthly bandwidth before choosing a plan
At a constant bitrate, approximate outbound transfer is bitrate × seconds streamed. For a 30-day month, the arithmetic below excludes protocol overhead and any traffic besides the stream:

These are calculations from bitrate and time, not provider-reported usage. Allow headroom for protocol overhead, monitoring or management traffic, and other workloads. If you send multiple feeds, their outbound bitrates add to the transfer requirement.

Compare Mumbai VPS plans by usable transfer, not headline price
AWS Lightsail
AWS Lightsail’s pricing page lists Linux/Unix bundles with public IPv4 at $5 per month with 1 TB of transfer, $7 per month with 2 TB, and $12 per month with 3 TB. AWS says Mumbai plans include half the transfer allowance displayed for these bundles, so those plans imply 0.5 TB, 1 TB, and 1.5 TB respectively in Mumbai. Both inbound and outbound traffic count toward the allowance; AWS charges only excess outbound transfer. On the listed $12 example, the implied 1.5 TB is above the calculated 972 GB for a 3 Mbps stream before overhead and other use, but below the approximately 1.94 TB for a 6 Mbps stream. DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean says Droplet plans start at $4 per month and bundled outbound transfer starts at 500 GiB per month, depending on plan. Its bandwidth documentation lists excess Droplet outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB. The official pages do not establish a Mumbai region, so treat it as a pricing comparison rather than a verified Mumbai-location option. Check these details before you buy
- Confirm that the provider actually offers a Mumbai region for the specific plan.
- Check regional outbound transfer, overage pricing, and whether the allowance counts inbound traffic too.
- Confirm the RAM, CPU, and disk space available for the operating system, encoder, and playlist files.
- Decide whether the VPS will copy a compatible source stream or transcode it; transcoding can demand substantially more CPU.
- Budget for more than the arithmetic minimum: exceeding a data allowance can raise the bill or constrain the service, depending on provider terms.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one, then choose the stream settings that match your planned broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Use them in the encoder configuration on the VPS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, logs, or public repositories. Rotate it if exposed.
- Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP. Keep the ingest URL and key together only in a protected configuration or secret store.
- Check the incoming preview before making the stream public or leaving it unattended. Verify the picture, audio, output bitrate, and playlist transition in Live Control Room.
Run a playlist encoder on Linux
One common DIY approach is FFmpeg reading a local media file and looping it while pushing a live feed to YouTube. The command below is a template, not a tested configuration. Replace the input and ingest values, confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen codecs, and test privately or with an appropriate test broadcast before relying on it. YouTube’s ingest guidance establishes the recommendations, not this specific command.

It is only a starting point: set the bitrate to suit your selected output and VPS transfer budget, and confirm frame-rate behavior and keyframe interval in the actual output. Put the real RTMPS server URL and stream key in a protected configuration rather than leaving credentials in a shell history or shared script. If the source is already compatible, a stream-copy workflow may reduce encoding load, but compatibility and stability must be tested.

Looping one file versus a playlist
A single-file loop is simpler to validate. For multiple files, build and test a playlist mechanism that handles transitions and compatible media properties; a plain sequence of files is not automatically gapless or format-consistent. Check that audio does not disappear at transitions and that the process continues through the end of the list. Store only authorized content on the VPS.
Make the process recoverable
An unattended stream should not depend on a terminal session remaining open. Run the encoder under an operating-system service manager or equivalent process supervisor, configure restart behavior, retain logs with rotation, monitor disk space, and set alerts for a stopped process or exhausted storage. This is operational guidance rather than a YouTube-prescribed supervisor configuration. A restart policy can restart FFmpeg after a process exit; it does not itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, so check Live Control Room and arrange monitoring for ingest failures too.
Test the whole path before leaving it live
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check video, audio levels, the selected resolution and bitrate, and at least one complete playlist transition.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and fix any warnings before making the broadcast public or unattended.
- Confirm that the VPS supervisor can restart the process after a controlled stop, and that logs and disk monitoring work.
- Watch the VPS process and YouTube health after launch; keep a recovery route available if either side fails.
YouTube’s own guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Broadcast only videos and audio for which the channel owner has the necessary rights to stream them. Public availability on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast a video through your own live stream. A playlist that runs continuously is still a broadcast of its contents; check licenses, permissions, and any applicable platform requirements before uploading or sending it live.

Troubleshooting common failures
No preview appears in Live Control Room
- Check that live streaming has been activated for the channel; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Verify that the encoder is using the selected stream’s server URL and current key, with no extra characters or stale credentials.
- Confirm network access to the ingest endpoint and that the encoder process is still running; inspect its logs for connection errors.
Stream health warns about bitrate or connection
- Lower the output target to a bitrate your VPS connection can sustain, then compare it with YouTube’s recommended setting for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Check for CPU saturation if transcoding; a VPS under load may fail to encode consistently even when the network is adequate.
- Check the provider’s Mumbai-specific transfer allowance and current usage. A plan’s headline allowance may not be its regional allowance.
Video plays but audio is missing or breaks between files
- Confirm the source contains an audio track and the encoder maps it to the output.
- Check the audio codec, sample rate, and channel configuration, then test transitions between playlist items rather than checking only the first file.
The feed stops after a disconnect or encoder crash
- Inspect the supervisor and encoder logs to identify whether the encoder exited, lost network access, or was unable to reconnect.
- Check restart policy, storage, and alerts; verify a recovery by testing a controlled interruption before relying on it.
- After any restart, confirm that YouTube has a fresh incoming preview and healthy feed. Process restart alone does not establish that the live stream resumed correctly.

Can the same YouTube stream key be reused for a playlist broadcast?
YouTube lets you configure an encoder with the server URL and key for the selected live stream. Use the key only for that stream setup and keep it private; rotate it if it is exposed.
Will YouTube automatically archive a 24/7 broadcast?
