You can run a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream from a Mac mini by sending a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The Mac must stay powered, connected and able to recover from interruptions; YouTube eligibility and music rights must be in place before launch. For a cloud-run alternative that does not depend on an always-on home computer, see StreamNeo.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube live streaming tips and encoder setup.
- A compatible Mac mini and encoder. OBS lists Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs with macOS 11 Big Sur or later in its system requirements; verify current release compatibility on the OBS requirements page. Compatibility does not guarantee that a particular Mac can sustain every scene, resolution and frame rate continuously.
- Music and visual material you have the rights to use in a YouTube livestream, including any applicable territory, monetization and archive rights.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full stream, plus headroom for normal variation.
Set up the Mac mini and YouTube stream
1. Confirm YouTube Live is enabled
Sign in to YouTube and open Live Control Room to check eligibility and activate live streaming if prompted. Do this before the planned launch: YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. A channel that has not met the eligibility conditions may not be able to start immediately.

2. Create the livestream and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream. Choose the appropriate visibility and audience settings for your channel.
- Open the stream settings and copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private, as you would a password. Anyone with it could send a feed to your livestream. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before continuing.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes entering these details into encoder software. YouTube lists encoder products as third-party tools, not YouTube-made or endorsed software.
3. Configure OBS to send the feed
- Install a current OBS release compatible with your macOS version. OBS’s system requirements list Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 or later; see its macOS version guidance for compatibility mappings.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if available, or use the custom service option and enter the YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Add the visual source for the radio channel, such as a still cover or a simple looping visual, and configure the audio source carrying the music. Confirm the audio meter responds and that the scene is actually visible in OBS.
- In Settings > Output and Settings > Video, set a video mode, encoder and bitrate that your Mac and internet connection can sustain. Use the YouTube recommendations below as a starting point, then inspect the real feed in YouTube’s preview.
Choose video, audio and encoder settings
For a static cover or gently moving visual, 720p30 is a sensible low-motion starting point; that is a practical suggestion, not a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends these H.264 video bitrates:
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | A modest starting mode for a mostly static radio visual. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | Use if the design benefits from more detail and your upload connection has room. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or uninterrupted operation. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings for the current table and protocol guidance.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS for encrypted ingest where your encoder setup supports it.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3, with stereo audio guidance at 128 Kbps.
- Match the ingest: Configure the encoder for the protocol and stream settings selected for the YouTube feed.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while testing, and adjust if audio levels, motion or connection stability are poor.

Check upload capacity and run a test
Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. If you also send a backup feed, include its bitrate in the capacity calculation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Connect the Mac mini to the router by Ethernet where practical; Apple’s current Mac mini specifications describe Ethernet capability, but configurations vary.
- Run an upload speed test on the actual network and compare the result with the total outgoing bitrate. Leave the recommended headroom rather than using the connection’s full measured capacity.
- Start OBS ahead of the planned launch. Check the YouTube preview, stream health, audio level and visual output before making the stream public or promoting it.
- Let the actual content run for an extended test. Look for dropped frames, audio gaps, overheating or other instability, and confirm the Mac and connection behave as expected over time.
- Test recovery deliberately: observe what happens after a network interruption and a Mac restart. If you configure a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it works.
YouTube’s live tips recommend configuring in advance, checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. A speed test alone cannot prove a 24/7 stream will stay healthy.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms require the creator to have the rights needed for use of the live content worldwide, including music rights. The terms specifically refer to rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Read the livestream terms and clear rights for the territories and uses you intend.
YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. Its copyright guidance warns that a licensed track can still interrupt a stream if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Confirm any required allowlisting directly with the rights owner. A consumer music subscription or a generic “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish permission for YouTube livestreaming.

Plan for unattended operation on a Mac mini
A local setup relies on the Mac mini, power, network and encoder all continuing to work. Apple documents hardware video encoding and model-dependent Ethernet in its Mac mini specifications; those specifications do not establish that a particular model will run a specific 24/7 streaming workload without interruption.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Review macOS power and sleep behavior on your exact machine, then test it with the display off and the stream running.
- Decide how OBS will be restored after a crash, macOS update, power loss or reboot. Test your recovery method rather than relying on an untested startup assumption.
- Monitor the stream and plan who will respond to stream-health alerts or a YouTube interruption.
- If you need a complete local copy, plan a separate recording or rolling-file strategy and verify current YouTube archive behavior. Do not assume an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be retained in full.
The cited OBS and Apple documentation covers software compatibility and hardware capabilities, not a Mac-specific recipe for sleep prevention, crash recovery or guaranteed continuous uptime.
