To run a 24/7 YouTube lo-fi channel, prepare a rights-cleared audio-and-video program, create a YouTube Live broadcast, and send the program to it through an encoder such as OBS. The encoder can run on a computer you keep online, or a cloud playout service can run the loop for you. Before launch, enable live streaming, test the full setup, and confirm that music and visuals are cleared for YouTube live use.
How prerecorded videos become a live YouTube stream
YouTube Live receives a live feed from an encoder. For a prerecorded lo-fi channel, the encoder plays your prepared program—often a video with a continuous music mix—and sends that output to the live broadcast. Viewers see it as a live stream even though the source material was recorded earlier. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the incoming stream from the broadcast viewers watch: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

For a 24/7 channel, the program must repeat continuously and the encoder must remain connected. With a local setup, that means a computer, OBS, and its internet connection stay available. With cloud playout, a hosted service runs the feed instead. Neither method makes the content itself live or grants rights to use the music or visuals.
Choose where the loop will run
| Approach | Where playback runs | Main advantage | Main dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local computer and encoder | A computer maintained by you | Direct control and the option to use a computer you already own | The computer, encoder, and its internet connection must remain available |
| Cloud playout | A hosted service | You do not have to maintain a dedicated streaming computer | The service and its connection to YouTube must remain available |
There is no established price or reliability comparison between these approaches here; those depend on the equipment or provider you choose. The local instructions below use OBS. For its initial configuration, OBS recommends the Auto-Configuration Wizard and provides connection and stream-quality troubleshooting in its Help Portal.

Prepare the program and clear its rights
Build a loop that can run unattended
- Assemble the tracks and visuals into a continuous program, or arrange them as a playlist in your encoder or playout service.
- Check the transitions, audio levels, and loop point so the program does not end, go silent, or display an unintended gap when it repeats.
- Keep a track list and records showing the rights for every music and visual element. A video file you made yourself can still contain music or artwork that needs separate permission.
Confirm live-use permission and Content ID handling
Check that each license covers livestreaming on YouTube, the territories you intend to reach, and monetized use if you plan to monetize. If a label, distributor, or other rights owner controls the music, ask whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party material, and says a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has licensed the material if the channel has not been allowlisted. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and YouTube for Artists’ guidance for music channels.
Enable YouTube Live before launch
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires a verified channel to livestream.
- Check restrictions. The channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Review current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Enable the feature in advance. YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streaming at least 24 hours before the first planned broadcast. Do not leave activation until launch day.
Set up a 24/7 loop in OBS
The exact OBS labels can vary by version, but the workflow is to add your prepared media, make it repeat, configure the YouTube broadcast, and keep the encoder running. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to start with settings matched to your system and connection rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution fits every channel.

- Open OBS and configure it. Start the Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts. Confirm the selected canvas and output settings suit your source video and available upload connection.
- Add your prerecorded program. In a scene, add the prepared video as a media source, or add the sources needed for your program. Enable looping for a single file. If using a playlist, confirm it advances through every item and returns to the beginning without stopping.
- Check audio and video in the OBS preview. Play the program and listen through transitions and the loop point. Make sure the picture is not cropped unexpectedly and the audio is present at a consistent level.
- Create a YouTube Live broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and retrieve its stream key and ingestion details. The stream key connects the encoder to the broadcast; keep it private.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the stream key and the appropriate server or ingestion details in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over an SSL connection; see its RTMPS ingestion documentation. Choose a protocol supported by the encoder you are using.
- Start with a test. Set the broadcast to unlisted for a test, then start streaming from OBS. Confirm in Live Control Room that the correct broadcast receives the feed and check that audio, video, and looping remain continuous.
- Launch publicly and maintain the encoder. Once the test is sound, set up the intended public broadcast and start the encoder. A local 24/7 stream depends on the computer and its connection staying on; plan for power, network, and software interruptions.
YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test, particularly for a high-investment broadcast. If the encoder will run on a local computer, use the OBS help resources for connection or quality issues rather than treating a successful preview as proof that a long-running stream will stay connected.

Test, monitor, and plan for interruptions
- Verify the whole loop. Watch and listen through at least one complete pass, including the transition back to the beginning.
- Confirm the right broadcast is receiving video. A valid stream key is not enough if OBS is connected to a different broadcast than the one you intend to publish.
- Check YouTube Studio during operation. Look for stream interruptions, copyright warnings, and strikes. A clean initial test does not establish that every track is cleared; a later track can still trigger a claim or interruption.
- Have a recovery plan. For a local setup, determine how you will restore playback after an internet outage, power loss, computer restart, or encoder failure. For cloud playout, check how the selected service handles loss of its YouTube connection before relying on it.
Copyright permission and monetization are separate questions
Permission to use music does not guarantee that a 24/7 channel will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and require original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies. A licensed track can satisfy a rights requirement while the channel still fails an originality or repetitiveness review.

Eligible channels may be able to use live ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships where available, but eligibility and feature availability vary, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. YouTube reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a prediction of an individual channel’s earnings. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
What to expect from a 24/7 stream archive
YouTube’s API documentation describes converting completed broadcasts into videos, but that does not establish what archive or replay behavior applies to one continuous broadcast that runs beyond 12 hours. If viewers need a complete replay, check YouTube’s current guidance before promising one; do not assume a nonstop stream will produce a full archived video. See the Live Streaming API documentation and YouTube’s copyright and live-stream guidance.
