You can broadcast prerecorded church services on YouTube Live by sending them through an encoder connected to your channel. To keep a channel running around the clock, the encoder must also reliably play and loop the files, recover from failures, and manage stream restarts. YouTube’s published encoder instructions explain how to start a stream, but do not provide a 24/7 playlist recipe or guarantee that one live event can run uninterrupted for a full day.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream, with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain eligibility.
- An encoder that can send a video program to YouTube. YouTube supports software encoding and describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events; it does not require a hardware encoder for church use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- Service recordings and the rights needed to stream and archive every part of them, including music.
- A tested plan for looping files, monitoring the live output, handling failures, and ending or restarting sessions.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one. Set its title, description, visibility, and other event details. A scheduled stream can have a shareable watch page and may appear to subscribers as an upcoming event. YouTube: stream with an encoder
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it can send a feed to the channel. Do not share it publicly.
- In the encoder, select the service recording or the programmed sequence of recordings that should be sent as the live program. Configure looping and restart behavior in that encoder only after confirming its documentation supports the workflow you need. YouTube’s instructions do not specify how to build or loop an encoder playlist.
- Start the encoder feed and check Live Control Room for its preview and stream status. When the encoder stops sending its feed, the live stream ends; plan the encoder’s start, stop, and recovery behavior accordingly.
Plan for continuous playback and stream handoffs
Do not assume a single YouTube live event can run indefinitely. YouTube says that all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its published encoder guidance does not establish a 24-hour uninterrupted mode, prescribe a session-rotation schedule, or guarantee a handoff between events. Before relying on a continuous channel, test the exact encoder and YouTube workflow you intend to use. Confirm that the playlist advances and loops as expected, determine what happens at the end of a session, and verify how the next stream appears to viewers. Check current YouTube behavior and test archive handling and watch-page transitions rather than assuming an automatic handoff.
Choose an encoder around the failure points
Compare software and hardware encoders on practical capabilities, not the assumption that one category is mandatory. Confirm that the encoder supports YouTube’s current ingest settings and your program format, and verify its file-playlist, looping, restart, and handoff behavior with the product’s own documentation. Assign a person or documented recovery plan to respond to a stopped feed, network outage, encoder failure, or silent or frozen program. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not verify a particular model’s looping or unattended operation, so check a candidate device or application against your church’s actual needs before adopting it.
Test before making the channel public
- Schedule the event early enough for setup. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are event-preparation tips, not a guarantee of unattended 24/7 operation. - Run an unlisted or private test where appropriate, then preview the signal in Live Control Room before going public.
- Check that the video and audio are clear and synchronized. Verify the event and watch page on desktop and mobile, and listen to the feed rather than relying only on the encoder’s status indicator.
- Test the failure and recovery path: interrupt the encoder or connection in a controlled test, then confirm who can restore the feed and what viewers see during recovery.
- Test the intended session ending and restart, including whether a new event or watch page is needed and how archives are handled.
Secure music and other content rights
The church is responsible for having the rights needed to stream and archive service content. YouTube’s live-stream terms specifically include music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube Terms of Service

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; unresolved content can result in temporary interruption or termination. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the church’s channel through Content ID. Ask the rights owner or licensing provider how to clear live use and request allowlisting where applicable. YouTube: copyright issues with live streams
- Confirm that permissions cover live streaming, the relevant territory, and archiving or replay—not only in-person use.
- Check that the rights cover every recording and embedded element, including background music, performances, and third-party video.
- Keep licensing records and any Content ID allowlisting confirmation accessible to the person operating the stream.
Understand policy and monetization limits
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams and identify repetitive or mass-produced material under its inauthentic-content policy. That does not by itself determine whether a particular church’s rotation complies or qualifies for monetization.
