To stream recorded medical school lectures continuously on YouTube, create a YouTube Live event and send it a feed from a software encoder, standalone encoder, or cloud service that can play and loop prerecorded files. A regular YouTube playlist does not become a live broadcast on its own. You will need channel access to live streaming, the YouTube server URL and stream key, permission for every item in the feed, and a plan to monitor interruptions and archives.

Choose how the lectures will play

The right setup depends on whether you want to manage playback locally, use a dedicated device, or hand playback off to a cloud service. Check that the option you choose can actually schedule or loop prerecorded files; an encoder that can send a live feed does not necessarily provide playlist scheduling.

Approach How it works What to verify
Cloud service A service plays uploaded recordings and sends the feed to YouTube Live. Confirm that its current plan supports your desired looping or schedule, YouTube connection method, and recovery needs. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming option; the listing does not establish its current prices or reliability. YouTube’s encoder guide.
Standalone encoder A dedicated device sends the prerecorded feed without keeping a general-purpose computer running. YouTube identifies the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. Check current compatibility and availability with the vendor; the YouTube listing is not a price or reliability comparison. YouTube’s encoder guide.
Local software encoder Software on a computer sends the feed over your internet connection. The computer, encoder, power and connection must remain available. Confirm that the software can play and loop files, or use a separate scheduler. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists OBS as an HLS-capable encoder, not as a turnkey 24/7 playlist scheduler. YouTube’s HLS guidance.

For any option, compare looping and scheduling controls, whether a computer must stay on, the ingestion protocol, monitoring and recovery, control of stream breaks, archive needs and total operating cost. The available YouTube guidance does not provide a head-to-head reliability assessment or current prices for these choices.

Prepare the recordings, permissions and channel

Organize and check the files

  • Put the lectures in the intended order and decide whether the sequence should repeat or follow a schedule. The exact looping control depends on the chosen service or encoder.
  • Test playback and audio before going live. Check that slides, lecture audio and any accompanying media are usable in the complete feed.
  • Make clear to viewers who the lectures are for and that they are educational material, not individualized clinical advice. This is prudent audience guidance, not a YouTube technical requirement.

Clear rights for every element

Confirm you have authority to broadcast each lecture, slide, image, recording and soundtrack. Educational purpose alone does not establish permission. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the feed with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the stream. Licensed material may still require its rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Confirm live-stream eligibility

YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you intend to launch. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect the feed

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, description and audience-facing privacy setting (public, private or unlisted) for the lecture channel. Use the Live Control Room to manage the event. YouTube’s setup instructions are in Set up your encoder.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the event’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your service or encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Choose the encoder’s protocol and preset. Use the YouTube preset and the protocol supported by your chosen tool. If you use HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s current requirements: transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends video in segments. These HLS constraints apply only when your encoder uses HLS; consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance and the encoder’s current instructions.
  4. Start privately or unlisted for a test. Start the feed and check the Live Control Room preview before sharing it publicly. Confirm that the watch page opens as intended, including on a mobile device, and listen and watch for problems.
  5. Start the scheduled event with monitoring in place. YouTube advises setting up encoders at least 2 hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are operational recommendations, not performance guarantees. Keep a person responsible for checking audio, video and the event status.

Plan for interruptions and recording archives

Keep a recovery path

Power loss, a local computer problem, a network drop or an encoder fault can stop a locally generated feed. Decide who will notice an interruption and how playback will be restarted or failed over. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring audio and video continuously in its live-streaming tips. A cloud or standalone setup changes which local components need to stay available, but still needs an operational check and a recovery plan.

Do not rely on a 24-hour stream for a complete archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise a complete archive for a single longer uninterrupted event. If keeping a complete recording matters, schedule shorter sessions below that threshold or make and validate a separate recording. Check that the local archive file is growing as expected during the test and retain a copy outside the live event when the lectures must remain available. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to do
You cannot start a live stream. The channel is not verified, has a live restriction, or first-time activation is still pending. Check eligibility and activation status in YouTube Studio; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Review YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
YouTube receives no feed or the encoder cannot connect. The server URL or stream key is missing, mismatched or outdated. Copy the current details from the event’s encoder settings into the corresponding fields. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised. Check the encoder setup steps.
The lectures do not repeat or play in the intended order. The chosen encoder sends a feed but does not schedule or loop files, or its playlist is configured differently than expected. Test the complete sequence before launch and confirm the playback or looping control in that tool’s current documentation. Do not assume an ordinary YouTube playlist controls the live feed.
The feed is replaced, interrupted or terminated. YouTube has detected third-party content, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. Check all audio and visual assets, secure permission, and ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel through Content ID when appropriate. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
The broadcast stops unexpectedly. A local computer, power supply, internet connection or encoder may have failed; a cloud service can also need attention. Check the feed status and playback source, restore the failed component, and test the recovery or failover process before relying on it for a long session. Monitor audio and video as recommended in YouTube’s streaming tips.
The full-day session is missing from the archive. YouTube’s automatic archiving guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive for longer events. Use shorter sessions or a separate recording, then check the saved file rather than assuming the live event produced a complete archive. Review YouTube’s archive guidance.
