How to Stream a 24/7 Recorded Geography Course on YouTube with FFmpeg Playlists

To stream a recorded geography course continuously on YouTube, put compatible lesson files in an FFmpeg concat playlist, send the output to a YouTube encoder stream, and monitor the broadcast from Live Control Room. The playlist handles sequential playback; it does not keep a local computer, FFmpeg process, or internet connection running reliably by itself. Test the full chain before relying on it, and plan separately for recovery and archives.

Check YouTube live-streaming access first

Before preparing the playlist, confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility guidance also says a person must be at least 16 to livestream. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and check access well before the planned start.

Prepare a compatible lesson playlist

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads entries from a text file in sequence, as though their packets had been muxed together. It is suitable when the lesson files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. It does not repair arbitrary differences between recordings; mismatches can cause errors, artifacts, or bad transitions. Inspect the files and test transitions before broadcasting.

#1 Best Overall
Beginning Geography Workbook, Homeschooling and Classroom Resource Workbook
  • Build the foundations for geography literacy, easy to introduce K 2 students to geography skills
  • Based on the national geography standards, 93 reproducible practice pages cover beginning map skills, landforms and bodies of water, and continents and oceans
  • Features two full color fold out maps that support student's multiple skill levels
  • Contains activities that easily fit into your curriculum
  • Cumulative reviews at the end of each section help you gauge student's progress

Create the playlist file

Save a plain-text file named lessons.ffconcat alongside the lesson videos:

ffconcat version 1.0
file lesson-01.mp4
file lesson-02.mp4
file lesson-03.mp4

The ffconcat version 1.0 marker must be the first line, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic recognition. Use paths that are safe and predictable. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths. Setting safe=0 allows arbitrary filenames and directives; use it only if you control or have reviewed every playlist entry.

Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for concat demuxer details. If recordings differ in codecs, stream layout, or time bases, normalize or re-encode them to a consistent format first, then check the resulting picture, sound, and lesson boundaries. Incorrect duration information can introduce artifacts, so do not assume that a playlist alone makes transitions seamless.

Set up YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Follow the prompts to configure the stream and obtain the server URL and stream key.
  2. Keep the stream key private: it is a credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel. Do not put a real key in a shared command, screenshot, or public playlist.
  3. Use the server URL and key shown for your stream in FFmpeg’s output configuration. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS; follow the protocol and ingest details presented for your selected stream.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and use the on-screen controls to start the broadcast as YouTube directs.

YouTube’s encoder guide explains stream setup and preview. Do not copy a sample key from an article or use another channel’s credentials.

Configure FFmpeg and encoder settings

There is no single safe command line for every set of lesson files: the correct stream mapping and whether to copy or re-encode depend on the source streams and the ingest configuration. First inspect the files and confirm their audio and video streams are compatible. Choose the output protocol supported by the selected YouTube stream, and insert the actual server URL and key only on the machine running FFmpeg. Keep credentials out of logs and shell history where practical.

For encoding, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select resolution and bitrate according to the lesson material and a reliably measured upload connection; a connection that is only fast on an occasional speed test is not a sound basis for a nonstop broadcast. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives current platform recommendations. Test at the intended resolution and bitrate rather than assuming a setting will work on your host and network.

Test the course before running it continuously

  1. Play the concat playlist locally and check the beginning, audio, lesson changes, and end-to-start behavior you intend to use.
  2. Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream using the same files, host, network, and encoder settings planned for the course.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event.
  4. Confirm that the broadcast is actually live on the channel and that viewers can hear narration and see maps, labels, and other small visual details clearly.
  5. Only after the test succeeds, start the intended broadcast and keep monitoring the encoder and Live Control Room.

Plan reliability and archives separately

A playlist can play lessons in order, but it does not provide continuous availability. A local FFmpeg process depends on its host staying powered and healthy and on a working network connection. Host restarts, encoder failures, and internet outages need deployment-specific recovery planning; the cited YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not guarantee uptime or describe a supervisor that will restart your local process. Decide how you will detect a stopped process and restore the stream before treating it as a 24/7 service.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Because a 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, do not assume YouTube will retain it as one complete archive. Keep the lesson source files and decide whether to record locally or divide the course into shorter broadcasts if a complete archive matters. See the YouTube encoder guide for its archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg rejects the playlist: Check that the first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, there is no byte-order mark or leading whitespace, and the listed paths exist. If a path is rejected as unsafe, use safe relative filenames rather than disabling the safety check; only use safe=0 for trusted playlist contents.
  • Concat errors or glitches at a lesson boundary: Compare stream layout, codecs, and time bases across the files. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files, then replay and inspect the transition. The concat demuxer joins compatible packet streams; it is not a general media repair tool.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder: Verify the stream is configured in Live Control Room, the correct server URL and stream key are in use, the key has not been replaced, and the selected ingest protocol matches the output configuration.
  • Preview is unstable or stream health is poor: Test the actual upload connection under sustained use, lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot reliably support the chosen output, and use YouTube’s recommended CBR and keyframe settings.
  • The stream stops after a host or network problem: Restore the local host, connection, or FFmpeg process and check the stream preview again. A playlist does not itself provide process supervision or outage recovery.
  • The full-day archive is missing or incomplete: A 24/7 stream is longer than YouTube’s documented automatic-archive window for streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording plan or divide the broadcast if full retention is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded geography lessons live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
