You can stream a continuous, pre-produced mantra playlist to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by creating a YouTube broadcast, placing the media files on the server, and running an encoder such as FFmpeg to send the feed over YouTube’s RTMPS connection. You must also supervise the process and confirm the stream’s audio, video, rights, and archive; neither a VPS nor an encoder by itself guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and verified. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux VPS with your media files accessible at server-side paths. The appropriate server size, bandwidth allowance, and cost depend on the host, source media, and target quality; the available guidance does not establish a universal VPS specification.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, installed with support for the input formats and network output you intend to use.
- The RTMPS ingestion details for your YouTube event or channel. Keep the stream key private.
- Permission to transmit and archive every music recording, composition, performance, visual, and other element in the stream.
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the event or video—from a stream, the incoming audio-video feed. Its API documentation identifies a 24/7 channel feed as a use case; one stream can be associated with more than one broadcast, but each broadcast is a distinct video: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.

Choose a continuous broadcast or separate events
Use one continuous broadcast if you want a single ongoing event and archive. If you prefer distinct event videos—for example, separate scheduled sessions—you can create separate broadcasts and associate them with a stream. Choose based on how you want viewers to encounter the feed and how you want its recordings organized.
YouTube’s current live-streaming help page also states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These limits may matter if you operate multiple feeds or encoders; check the current YouTube live-streaming help before configuring them.

Set up the YouTube event and encoder connection
- Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no current restriction. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says there must have been no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event and open its encoder settings. Use the ingestion details shown for that event or channel; labels and available options can change in Studio.
- Select RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for most ordinary content, particularly where low latency matters. It uses TLS/SSL and port 443. YouTube provides an ingestion address and stream name for the encoder: YouTube’s ingestion protocol guidance and RTMPS ingestion details.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Store it in a protected environment file or service configuration rather than embedding it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or tutorial. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion. Those involve segmented delivery workflows and are not necessary for a basic encoder-to-YouTube VPS setup.
Put the playlist media on the VPS
Transfer or otherwise make the audio and video files available on the VPS, then confirm their server-side paths and permissions. A playlist prepared on your computer is not automatically available to an encoder running remotely; FFmpeg must be able to read each file from the VPS. Keep a separate backup of the source files if losing them would disrupt your operation. An external hard drive can serve as a local backup or transfer device, but it is not required for streaming once the media is on the server.

Before building a long-running playlist, inspect the media for consistent audio levels, usable visuals, and clean transitions. Confirm that the files can be decoded by the installed FFmpeg build. There is no single playlist command or VPS specification that is correct for every format and hosting plan, so do not assume an example copied from another setup will work unchanged.
Run FFmpeg and keep it supervised
FFmpeg can process media and send it to a network output. The precise command depends on the input format, playlist method, FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Set the event’s current encoder details in the command or protected runtime configuration; do not publish a real stream key. Check the installed build’s supported formats and options, and validate the command with a short private test before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

FFmpeg’s documentation includes a FIFO muxer example using real-time pacing and recovery attempts after temporary network failures: FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation. Recovery attempts can help with some interruptions, but cannot guarantee uptime: the VPS, its network, the media source, the encoder process, or the YouTube event can still fail.
For an operational deployment, arrange process supervision, logs, disk-space checks, and alerts. The exact setup is host-specific; the cited guidance does not prescribe a universal systemd unit or monitoring service. Test what happens when the encoder exits, the network drops, the playlist reaches its end, or the YouTube broadcast stops. If you configure a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.

Preview, start, and monitor the stream
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Studio to show the incoming feed.
- Check the preview for both audio and video before starting the broadcast. Confirm the mantra audio is audible, the visuals are appropriate, and the feed is not unintentionally silent or frozen.
- Start the event in YouTube Studio when the preview is healthy. Confirm viewers can access it as intended.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast. YouTube advises creators to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality”: YouTube live-streaming tips.
- Check that the archive is being created and that its file continues to grow as expected. If you rely on an archive, verify the resulting video after the event or test the archive behavior in advance.
Copyright and other content rights
Having an audio file does not automatically give you permission to livestream or archive it. Secure the necessary rights for the recording, composition, performance, artwork, and any other visual or audio material, including rights for live transmission and archiving in the territories where you intend to make the content available. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing, on the content provider, and require live content to comply with its Community Guidelines: YouTube livestream terms and conditions.
Copyright strikes and a match to copyrighted live content are among the issues that can restrict live streaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance and its copyright basics before broadcasting. Rights clearance is separate from technical setup: a stream that connects successfully can still be interrupted or restricted over its content.

Linux VPS versus running the encoder at home
A VPS moves the encoder process off your home computer and connection, but it does not remove operational dependencies. You still need suitable hosting, accessible media, a working server-side process, network capacity, and monitoring. A home encoder avoids VPS hosting but depends on the local machine, power, and connection staying available. The better fit depends on which environment you can maintain and supervise.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a simpler alternative to managing a Linux VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
