Build a varied schedule that offers real value, set the audience honestly, clear the rights to every video and song, and keep a local recording: a YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
Choose how the stream will run
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. For a continuous prerecorded schedule, the practical choices are an encoder running a playlist or a hosted service that schedules prerecorded video. The choice is mainly about who operates the stream continuously and how you will recover if the computer or service stops.

For OBS setup, YouTube’s guide explains connecting the software to Live Control Room; OBS also maintains streaming and encoding guides. YouTube’s current help page says a channel can have up to 10 active streams, with up to three active streams per stream key. Those are platform limits, not a recommended way to multiply a children’s channel.

Prepare a varied, rights-cleared program
Make the schedule useful, not merely long
There is no published minimum catalog size, permitted replay count, or safe repetition interval in YouTube’s monetization policy. Don’t promise viewers or advertisers that a video is safe to repeat after a specific number of hours or days. Instead, assemble enough distinct material to make the schedule meaningfully varied, and make the programming worthwhile for children and families who arrive at different times.

YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams as well as uploaded videos. It says monetized content should not be mass-produced or repetitive, and that each video’s substance should be materially varied and deliver creative, educational, or other value. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its renamed “inauthentic content” policy. A long playlist alone does not establish that a channel meets the policy.
- Mix distinct episodes, activities, stories, or other properly licensed programming instead of relying on a small set of clips in a loop.
- Vary the substance and purpose of the programming, not just the order of identical videos.
- Review the stream as a viewer would: check transitions, repeated segments, audio levels, and whether the schedule remains understandable when someone joins midstream.
- Keep records of the source and permissions for each video and audio track.
YouTube channel monetization policies
Clear rights before broadcasting
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast every part of the stream, including music, performances, images, and video. A song being available online or included in a video you own does not by itself show that you have permission to rebroadcast it in a live stream. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to secure necessary rights for worldwide exploitation and comply with applicable laws. Confirm that each license covers the actual use and territories; this is especially important if your schedule includes third-party children’s programs or music.

Set the audience accurately in Live Control Room
When you create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, select the audience setting that reflects the actual intended audience. YouTube cautions creators not to rely on its automated systems to classify content: those systems may not identify material that regulators consider made for kids. This setting is not a way to choose which features you want; it must match the content and audience.
A stream designated as made for kids loses or restricts features, including live chat, comments, the notification bell, and personalized ads. Do not mark a stream “not made for kids” merely to retain those features. YouTube: Set your channel or video’s audience
Start the stream and keep a backup
- Check channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review eligibility in YouTube Studio before scheduling the broadcast.
- Choose the workflow. For a self-operated stream, use an encoder such as OBS and connect it with YouTube Live Control Room. For a hosted prerecorded workflow, check the service’s current plan requirements and confirm how it handles scheduling and interruptions.
- Create the live broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and configure its title, visibility, and audience. Set made-for-kids status according to the actual intended audience.
- Connect the encoder or hosted service. Use the stream key for the broadcast and keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel. Follow the encoder’s YouTube connection guide or the hosted service’s current setup instructions.
- Test before relying on a 24/7 schedule. Preview the feed, confirm that video and audio are present, check playlist transitions, and verify that the correct broadcast is live. A short test helps catch configuration errors before they affect the scheduled program.
- Keep a local recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep your own recording or other local archive rather than treating YouTube’s replay as the only copy.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and that no live-streaming restriction has been applied during the previous 90 days. Confirm you are using the right YouTube account and broadcast.
- The stream is not receiving video: Check that OBS or the hosted service is sending to the stream key associated with the broadcast you created. Confirm the encoder is running and its output is active; if you changed keys, update the sending service.
- The stream stops when your computer is off: A local encoder depends on the computer, power, and internet connection. Keep those available for a local setup, or use a cloud-hosted prerecorded workflow.
- A replay is missing after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Recover from your own local recording if you made one.
- Chat or notifications are unavailable: Made-for-kids streams have feature restrictions, including disabled live chat and the notification bell. Do not change the audience setting to work around a restriction.
- Monetization is limited or denied: Review whether the schedule is materially varied and provides creative, educational, or other value. YouTube publishes no numeric replay interval that guarantees compliance.
- A copyright claim or interruption appears: Recheck permissions for all video and audio, including music, and confirm that the rights cover livestreaming and the relevant territories. Remove or replace material you cannot verify you are entitled to use.
