Use a simple scene, begin at 30 fps, choose an encoder your specific computer can sustain, and test the complete setup for hours before going public. For YouTube’s H.264 settings, the recommended bitrate is 8 Mbps at both 720p30 and 720p60; YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS.
What you need to check before streaming
First confirm the PC’s processor, integrated or discrete graphics, available hardware encoders, memory, cooling, storage, and network connection. OBS’s system requirements page cautions that compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming performance; workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its requirements page dates to 2021, so check it against the OBS release you install: OBS system requirements.
- Use a wired connection if practical, and make sure the PC can remain powered and cool during long sessions.
- Check whether your system offers a compatible hardware encoder. Do not assume every low-power PC has one, or that hardware encoding is mandatory.
- Decide whether you need a local recording, and confirm you have enough storage for it.
- Prepare only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast, including every clip and song in the loop.
OBS provides an Auto Configuration Wizard and guidance on streaming configuration through its help portal: OBS Help. Use the wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for testing on the actual PC.
Build a low-load 720p OBS setup
Keep the scene simple
Start with a 1280×720 canvas and 30 fps. That is a conservative starting suggestion, not a performance guarantee. It often suits slower-moving cartoons, illustrations, or slides; use 60 fps only if the material benefits from smoother motion and your PC remains stable under sustained encoding.

Use a single media source or a small number of sources. Remove browser sources, animated overlays, unnecessary filters, and extra scaling steps unless the channel truly needs them. If you use a playlist, test transitions and audio between items so that a source change does not leave the stream blank or silent.
Choose the encoder by testing your hardware
Compare x264 CPU encoding with any compatible hardware encoder available on your PC. The right choice depends on sustained CPU and GPU load, image quality at the actual bitrate, compatibility, heat, and fan noise. OBS workload changes with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; no single encoder is best for every low-power system. OBS’s help portal links to its x264 streaming guide and configuration wizard.
Run the Auto Configuration Wizard, then adjust only what the test indicates needs attention. Watch OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics during a long run. If frames are missed or the computer overheats, reduce scene complexity or frame rate, try another available encoder, and repeat the test.

Set YouTube’s 720p stream settings
For a broad-compatibility baseline, use H.264 video over RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend the following H.264 video bitrate for 720p:

YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your PC or connection can sustain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.
Configure the stream in OBS using the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. The configured video bitrate is not the entire network load; leave additional upstream headroom for audio and connection variation. The required margin depends on your connection and is not specified by YouTube’s recommendation.

A speed test is only a snapshot. Test with the actual video, audio, and scene while monitoring YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can reliably support and testing before the event.
Verify the channel and launch with an unlisted test
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to start streaming. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch. - In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Set the title, description, privacy, and audience designation accurately.
- Copy the stream key into OBS’s streaming settings and keep it confidential.
- Start an unlisted test and verify picture, sound, motion, bitrate, dropped frames, and stream health.
- Let the test run for multiple hours with the content and audio you intend to loop. Fix problems and repeat the test before switching to public operation.
In YouTube Studio, the exact controls and labels can change. Confirm the current Live Control Room options in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.

Make the channel genuinely suitable for children
YouTube requires creators to identify whether a video or live stream is made for kids. Make that decision based on the content and applicable requirements, not as an audience-growth tactic or by relying on automated detection. Made-for-kids designation removes or limits features including live chat, comments on archives, notifications, and personalized ads. Read YouTube’s guidance on setting your audience.
Rights clearance applies to everything broadcast: the video, music, sound effects, and any included clips. YouTube identifies copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons live streaming can be restricted. A public video, purchased copy, or credit line does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.

A 24/7 stream needs a recovery plan as well as an encoder configuration. Before launch, decide who will respond if the source freezes, OBS stops encoding, the network drops, or the PC restarts. Test recovery deliberately; do not assume OBS or YouTube will restore every failure without intervention. An automatic reboot may help with a specific failure mode, but use it only after confirming OBS and the stream recover safely afterward.

YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive backup: YouTube live-stream archive guidance. If a reliable replay matters, consider scheduled shorter broadcasts and local recording rather than relying on one uninterrupted all-day archive. Account for the extra disk space and possible encoding or storage load, and test local recording alongside streaming.
A UPS may bridge a brief power interruption if it is sized for the measured equipment load and the ride-through time you need. It cannot prevent internet outages, PC failures, or YouTube downtime; no specific capacity or runtime can be recommended without knowing the PC and desired runtime.
Troubleshoot common 720p failures
