The NAS is the media source; the channel generator, media server, and TV or player app may be separate devices on your home network.
How the setup fits together
Think of this as three connected pieces, not one NAS setting:
- Media source: A folder on the NAS or a library managed by Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby.
- Virtual-channel generator: Software that turns selected videos into scheduled channel output.
- Playback client: A compatible TV app or media-server client that receives the channel, commonly through a virtual HDHomeRun tuner or an M3U playlist.
A broadcast antenna is not inherently part of this workflow. The channel is assembled from files you already have; it is not necessarily a public broadcast or an internet livestream.
Choose a channel-generation route

There is no universal best option: compare whether your media is exposed as local folders or a server library, which delivery route your client supports, how you want to organize schedules, and whether the host can handle any required transcoding. Test the exact NAS, files, network, and playback device together.

Build the channel and make it child-safe
- Expose the library. Confirm that the channel generator can read the NAS directory or the relevant Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby library. Check permissions and test access to a few files before building a schedule.
- Make a reviewed collection. Use a dedicated folder or collection containing only titles an adult has checked. Do not assume a media server’s library restrictions also apply to its Live TV or virtual-channel feature.
- Create the channel schedule. Add the selected media, arrange it into collections or programming blocks, create the channel, and set its schedule. ErsatzTV’s documented sequence includes adding media, making collections, creating channels and schedules, then configuring clients; Tunarr documents channel configuration and scheduling.
- Connect a playback route. Choose the route supported by the intended client: a virtual HDHomeRun tuner, or an M3U playlist in a compatible IPTV player. Jellyfin documents both M3U and HDHomeRun tuner options for Live TV.
- Test as the child will watch. On the actual TV and child account, test the start and end of programs, channel changes, subtitles, and audio tracks. Keep an adult-controlled account available to fix the library or schedule if an unsuitable title appears.
Choose a stream mode that fits your host and client
Stream format affects both compatibility and the work the host must do. ErsatzTV documents three relevant modes:
- HLS Segmenter: Transcodes, supports watermarks, and is described by ErsatzTV as performing best at program boundaries.
- MPEG-TS: A light wrapper around that mode for clients that require an HDHomeRun tuner.
- HLS Direct: Does not transcode and may suit a lower-powered system better, but it lacks watermarks and some clients may have trouble at program boundaries.
These descriptions do not establish a universal CPU, RAM, or NAS requirement. Test the selected mode on the host and client you will actually use. Plex separately warns that some apps may not play recorded content when the Plex server runs on a low-power NAS without transcoding support; that is a reason to test your files and client, not proof that every virtual channel requires transcoding.

Parental controls, rights, and household boundaries
Plex’s Parental Controls documentation, last modified June 23, 2023, says managed-user restrictions for movie and TV libraries and video-on-demand do not apply to Live TV content or channels. Do not rely on those profiles alone to make a virtual kids’ channel safe. Curate the source collection, test the child account in the actual player, and restrict account access to the intended channel where the software allows it.
Software documentation does not determine whether you have the rights to stream a particular program or share it. Use content you are authorized to access and stream. Before sharing beyond your household or distributing a channel, check the applicable licenses and local law; the answer depends on the titles, territory, and audience.

Troubleshoot common problems

Optional viewing hardware
A Fire TV device may be a possible playback option because Jellyfin lists Amazon among its client platforms. It is not required, and that broad listing does not verify a specific retail model, app version, codec, or Tunarr/ErsatzTV combination. Check model-specific app and format support before buying anything; an existing compatible TV or player may be enough.
