Check the preview and stream health before and during the broadcast. If you need a replay, do not rely on one stream running all day: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends keeping a local recording backup.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream from a computer. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before scheduling a long broadcast.
- A prepared video file or loop and its cicada audio. For a prepared feed, an encoder is the appropriate workflow; a camera or expensive hardware encoder is not required just to play a pre-produced video.
- An encoder and a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the output you choose.
- Permission to use both the forest visuals and the cicada recording for a livestream and any replay you intend to retain.
The exact encoder settings depend on the source video, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and representative picture and sound rather than using one universal bitrate for every setup.

Set up the YouTube livestream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder option. Set the title, description, visibility, and any other stream details you need.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a public screen recording, include it in a description, or share it with people who should not control your broadcast.
- Configure the encoder for the resolution and frame rate of your prepared video, and select an output bitrate your connection can sustain. Test a representative section of both the forest footage and the cicada audio before committing to a long run.
- Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled start. YouTube’s live-stream tips advise starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then confirm that the image is moving as expected and the cicada sound is audible and free of clipping or gaps.
- When the preview and stream health look right, start the livestream from Live Control Room if the stream is not configured to start automatically. Keep watching the health indicators and the actual output for freezes, missing audio, or interruptions.
Choose between one long stream and shorter sessions
| Approach | What it gives you | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One uninterrupted 24/7 stream | Continuous live availability while the encoder and internet connection remain healthy. | YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. |
| Successive streams, each under 12 hours | A clearer boundary for restarting, checking the setup, and qualifying for automatic archiving. | You must manage each next session. YouTube’s guidance does not promise a seamless handoff or quantify any effect on viewers when a stream restarts. |
| Local recording backup | A copy under your control, independent of YouTube’s stream archive. | Storage needs depend on your recording settings. Check that the local file is actually growing while the stream runs. |
YouTube Help’s archive guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” and recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If the replay matters, schedule sessions to end before the 12-hour threshold and arrange the next session yourself; do not assume YouTube will preserve or seamlessly join an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. Save a local recording as a separate copy and size its storage for your chosen recording settings. YouTube does not specify a required drive or storage capacity.
Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind, so viewers may not be able to seek back through the broadcast as expected. A local recording does not guarantee that a YouTube replay will be available, but it gives you an independent source to keep or publish according to your needs.

Protect the rights to the footage and cicada audio
Use recordings you made yourself or material covered by permissions or licences that allow the intended live use and any archive. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights to exploit live and archived content worldwide and for complying with applicable legal requirements.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A detected match can replace the live image with a placeholder and trigger a warning; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Confirm the permitted uses and, where relevant, ask the rights holder about allowlisting before you go live. Do not assume that nature ambience or cicada sounds are automatically copyright-free.

Check the stream during the broadcast
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and the live preview for dropped frames, freezes, or other interruptions.
- Listen to the stream output, not only the encoder’s meters, to catch muted, distorted, or missing cicada audio.
- If keeping a local archive, confirm that its file is growing and that the recording can be opened and played. YouTube’s tips also recommend testing encoder failover if your setup has a backup encoder.
- For a 24/7 viewer experience built from shorter sessions, plan and monitor the restart yourself. The available YouTube guidance does not guarantee a seamless transition between sessions.
Troubleshoot common problems
No preview appears in Live Control Room
Check that the encoder is running and that its stream URL and stream key match the current stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream, then check the encoder’s connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages before going live.
The picture freezes or the stream becomes unhealthy
Check the internet connection and whether the selected output bitrate is sustainable. Test with representative footage and adjust the output to match the connection rather than assuming one bitrate suits every resolution and frame rate.

The cicada sound is missing or distorted
Check the audio source and encoder input, then listen to the Live Control Room preview or stream output. Test the exact section of the recording you intend to loop; a visible video preview alone does not confirm working audio.
The livestream is interrupted after a copyright match
Review the matched content and confirm that your rights cover livestream use and archiving. If you licensed the material, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Replacing the audio or footage with material you have permission to use may be necessary before restarting.

The stream ends but no replay appears
Check its duration. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For future sessions, end before that threshold and keep a local recording backup if the archive is important.
