To run a fireplace video as a continuous YouTube live stream with FFmpeg, prepare footage and audio you have the rights to use, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, and run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option. Then configure YouTube-compatible video and audio output and test the stream in Live Control Room. The loop option repeats the file; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A fireplace video and any accompanying audio that you own or are licensed to use for YouTube live streaming.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current help guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days; a person must be at least 16 to live stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A computer with FFmpeg installed, a stable upload connection, and enough processing capacity if you plan to re-encode the video.
- The server URL and stream key for an encoder stream created in YouTube Studio.
You do not need a camera or microphone to broadcast a prepared file. A computer’s suitability depends on the media, selected encoding settings, and whether it must transcode; the sources cited here do not establish a minimum hardware specification.
Check the footage and music rights first
Use only footage and audio you created or have permission to use for YouTube live streaming. Keep a copy of the license or other permission, and check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel through Content ID. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel is not allowlisted where required.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It can replace a stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, and may terminate a stream for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before going live.

Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private: treat it like a password and do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or post.
- Use the URL and key as the FFmpeg output destination and stream-key credentials. The exact URL format depends on the ingest information Studio provides and the protocol you choose.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio, but compatible combinations depend on the ingest protocol and the encoder build. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current requirements.
Configure FFmpeg to loop the video
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option means infinite input looping. Put it before the -i that names the file it should loop; FFmpeg options apply in relation to their input or output, so placement matters. For file playback at its native rate, use -re where appropriate.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "fireplace.mp4" -f flv "[YouTube ingest URL and stream key]"This is a command shape, not a tested, ready-to-run command. The correct encoding options and output URL depend on the file’s codecs, your FFmpeg build, shell, ingest protocol, and whether the source can be copied or must be re-encoded. Do not paste bracketed explanatory text literally. FFmpeg documents the loop behavior as: “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” See the FFmpeg documentation.
Choose output settings for the connection and source
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose a bitrate appropriate for the resolution and your sustained upload capacity. Leave headroom rather than configuring a rate your connection can only briefly reach.
- Video and audio: Use a supported codec combination for the chosen ingest protocol. Confirm the file has the audio you intend to broadcast and that the output audio codec is compatible.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when supported by the FFmpeg build and workflow; use the URL and protocol shown or supported by YouTube Studio.
Do not assume that one bitrate or resolution is reliable for every network. If you transcode, account for the computer’s ability to encode continuously; if source codecs and the ingest path are compatible, copying may avoid unnecessary re-encoding, but that compatibility must be checked for your particular file and setup.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the encoder preview to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Watch representative movement in the flames and listen to the audio. A static-looking preview or silent source can conceal problems that a brief setup check will not catch.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and fix warnings before making the stream public or setting the intended audience access.
- After changing resolution, bitrate, keyframes, audio, or protocol, test again and review stream health rather than assuming the new configuration is stable.
Make a 24/7 broadcast recover from failures
A looping input only tells FFmpeg to repeat the media while that process is running. It does not restart FFmpeg if it exits, recover a rebooted machine, restore a lost internet connection, or ensure YouTube accepts a reconnect. For unattended operation, use a service manager or equivalent process supervisor appropriate to your operating system, and plan logging, restart behavior, and alerts. Those details vary by OS and installation; verify them against documentation for the system and FFmpeg build you actually use rather than treating a loop command as an uptime guarantee.
Also separate the live broadcast from its archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that a single continuous 24-hour stream will be archived in full or remain available as one recording.
