You can use a Raspberry Pi as the encoder for a continuous YouTube music livestream, but the Pi does not make it a guaranteed-uptime setup—and it does not give you permission to broadcast Tamil film songs. First clear the rights for every song and visual, then choose an encoding path that suits your Pi, configure YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, and plan for power, network and process failures.
Check music rights before you build the stream
Do not treat a song’s availability online, a personal copy, or ownership of a Raspberry Pi as permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you have rights for each recording and any accompanying visuals for the intended use, territories and duration. If you plan to keep a recording of the livestream available afterward, check that archive or video-on-demand use is covered too.

YouTube Help says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a warning, a placeholder image, temporary interruption or termination. YouTube also says that, for licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. Ask the rights owner about both the scope of your license and any required allowlisting before going live.

There is no general clearance for “Tamil film songs” as a category: rights and permissions can differ by song, recording, territory and use. If you cannot document permission for a track, leave it out. A technical test cannot establish that a song is cleared.

Choose a Raspberry Pi encoding approach
Your Pi has to play the audio and visual source, encode the video, and send the resulting stream over your internet connection. The board generation matters. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s H.264 encoding performance note compares a Pi 4 hardware-encoding path using h264_v4l2m2m with Pi 5 software encoding using libx264. It describes software configurations for different latency and quality aims; it is not evidence that either board will sustain a particular 24/7 workload.
| Board path | What the cited encoding note establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 | The note compares a hardware H.264 path using h264_v4l2m2m. |
Confirm that your encoder software and operating-system setup can use the hardware path, then test the intended resolution and frame rate. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | The note compares software H.264 encoding using libx264; do not assume it has a hardware H.264 encoder. |
Software encoding uses CPU resources. Test with the actual visual, resolution and frame rate you plan to stream rather than assuming the Pi has enough headroom. |
These are encoding paths, not a reliability ranking. The cited note does not establish uninterrupted service for a fully assembled livestream setup. If the Pi struggles during a representative test, lower the video workload or choose a different encoder arrangement before attempting a continuous broadcast.

Set the YouTube broadcast and encoder feed
YouTube treats the broadcast and the incoming encoder feed as related but distinct resources: the broadcast is the event viewers watch, while the live stream is the feed sent by the encoder. Google’s broadcasts and streams guide discusses 24/7 broadcast scenarios, but it does not promise that a local Pi, internet connection or broadcast will stay uninterrupted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm live access for your channel. Set up the live broadcast in YouTube Studio and check that the channel can use the live-streaming features you need. Availability and eligibility can depend on the channel; verify them in your own account before scheduling a long-running stream.
- Create or select the broadcast and its encoder feed. In YouTube Studio, configure the livestream, then use the associated stream settings to obtain its stream key and ingest details. YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Do not share the stream key: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Configure the Pi encoder. Choose the encoding method appropriate to your Pi and software. For H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Select an audio format supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance, which lists AAC and MP3.
- Choose a video target the Pi and connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 at 30 fps are 4 Mbps at 720p and 5 Mbps at 1080p. These are platform recommendations, not minimums that guarantee a reliable home connection. Leave upload headroom and test your actual connection. If the upload rate varies or the encoder cannot maintain the target, reduce the video resolution or bitrate and test again.
- Provide a visual layer. A stream of songs still needs an image or other visual layer to be a YouTube video livestream. Use only artwork, video or other visual material that you are permitted to broadcast, and check that it plays smoothly alongside the audio.
- Test before treating it as continuous. Send a private or otherwise appropriately limited test feed, check YouTube’s stream health, and listen and watch from another device. Test representative songs and visuals, not just an idle screen. Confirm that audio stays in sync, the image remains present, and the Pi stays responsive while encoding.
- Start the public broadcast only after the test and rights checks pass. Start the encoder feed, confirm that YouTube is receiving it, and then bring the broadcast live using the controls shown in YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private.
Make playback and recovery part of the design
A 24/7 stream has two separate jobs: keeping the encoder connected to YouTube and keeping the intended songs playing in the right order. A playlist that reaches its end, a player that stops, or an encoder process that exits can leave the broadcast without the intended content even if the Pi still has power. Design the playback workflow to repeat or advance through the cleared material, and test the end of the playlist as well as transitions between tracks.

- Power: Use a power supply suitable for the board and avoid a setup where an accidental unplug leaves the stream stopped. A restart after power returns is not the same as uninterrupted service.
- Network: Use a stable connection with upload capacity above the encoder’s target and enough headroom for normal variation. A brief outage can interrupt the feed even when the Pi and source files are fine.
- Storage: Keep the source media on storage that remains available to the Pi, and leave room for the operating system and logs. Do not assume a playlist can continue if its files are missing or unreadable.
- Process recovery: Decide how you will notice and restart a stopped player or encoder. YouTube documents broadcast and stream resources, not automatic recovery for a Pi process or your home network.
- Monitoring: Check the broadcast from outside the Pi. Watch for YouTube stream-health warnings, missing visuals, silence, frozen playback and a broadcast that has ended.
A successful test proves only that the tested configuration worked under those conditions. Neither YouTube’s broadcast documentation nor the Raspberry Pi encoding note establishes a 24/7 uptime figure for your home setup.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Stream key, ingest configuration, network access or encoder state | Confirm that the Pi is using the current key and the correct ingest details from the broadcast settings. Check that the encoder is running and the connection is available; keep the key private. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the picture breaks up | Upload capacity or encoding load | Compare the encoder’s output with the chosen resolution and YouTube’s bitrate recommendation. Test with more upload headroom, or lower the resolution or bitrate and retest. |
| The Pi becomes unresponsive or encoding falters | Encoding workload, particularly software encoding | Check board-specific encoding configuration and test at a lower video workload. The Pi 5 software-encoding path should not be treated like a hardware H.264 encoder. |
| The broadcast has video but no song audio, or the playlist stops | Audio source, playback workflow or end-of-list behavior | Check the audio input and supported output format, then test playback through multiple tracks and the end of the playlist. Verify that the chosen workflow repeats or advances as intended. |
| The stream is interrupted after a song begins | Content ID match or rights issue | Check YouTube’s notice and contact the rights owner. Confirm that live streaming is covered and ask whether the channel must be allowlisted in Content ID; do not simply restart with the same uncleared material. |
| The feed stops after a power or internet interruption | Local power, internet service or encoder recovery | Restore the failed service, confirm the encoder and playback are running, and check YouTube Studio before bringing the broadcast live again. Plan monitoring and recovery rather than assuming a Pi will recover every failure automatically. |
Cost and the cloud alternative
A Raspberry Pi build requires the board and compatible power, storage, enclosure and cooling choices, but no current hardware prices or 24/7 performance test are established here. Compare the cost of the complete setup and the time needed to monitor and recover it, not just the board. Whatever method you choose, the hardware does not grant music rights.
