To stream a prerecorded night-forest ambience video continuously from Linux, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file and -re to send it at normal playback speed. You also need a live-stream destination’s ingest URL and stream key, a stable upload connection, and a way to restart and monitor FFmpeg if something fails. The command below is a YouTube-oriented H.264 example; change its endpoint and settings to match your destination.
Before you start
You need a Linux machine that can stay on, FFmpeg built with the required encoders, a prerecorded video file, and a destination that accepts RTMP or RTMPS publishing. For YouTube, create or configure a live stream and copy the ingest URL and stream key from its live-stream setup. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Use a video and audio track you have the rights to broadcast. A file being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
- Make sure the machine’s sustained upload capacity exceeds the stream’s video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. Leave room for connection variation.
- Keep the computer awake and connected to power and the network for the duration of the broadcast.
Choose settings for the destination
YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The example uses H.264 for broad compatibility. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current requirements.
| Setting | Example value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video frame rate | 30 fps | The example produces 30 frames per second. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30. At 1080p30, its H.264 recommendation is 14 Mbps; use the value for your actual resolution and frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds. |
| Audio | AAC, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | Matches YouTube’s published stereo AAC guidance. |
| Output transport | RTMPS | Use the secure ingest URL supplied by YouTube when available. |
These YouTube figures are not universal settings: bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. If you select another platform, follow its ingest and encoder guidance instead. The video bitrate is not the entire connection requirement; allow additional capacity for audio and network variation.

Replace the input filename with your video file, then replace the endpoint placeholder with the destination’s complete ingest URL and stream key. Run:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i forest-night.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-host>/<application>/<stream-key>'The angle-bracketed endpoint is only a placeholder; it is not a working address. Copy the actual ingest URL and credential from your destination’s live setup. Avoid posting the command publicly if it contains your real key.

Check the destination’s live-stream dashboard for incoming video and audio, then start the stream only after confirming the preview and stream health.
What the important flags do
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely;-rereads the file at its playback rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it. FFmpeg documents these input options and RTMP publishing in its command-line documentation.-r 30sets the output to 30 fps, and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval.-b:v 8Msets the target video bitrate, while-maxrate 8Mand-bufsize 16Mconstrain rate variation. This example is aimed at YouTube’s H.264 720p30 recommendation; it does not resize the source to 720p.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Confirm that the source contains the audio you expect; a silent or missing audio track may require a different input or configuration.-f flvselects the FLV output format used for RTMP-family publishing. Use the destination’s ingest URL, not an address guessed from another service.
Test before leaving it unattended
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to what will be in the actual stream, checking upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. For a forest ambience loop, let the destination receive enough of the real file to verify picture, sound, and the transition where the clip repeats. Confirm that the stream remains healthy after the loop point rather than assuming that a successful initial connection proves a 24/7 setup is sound.

- Check that the destination preview shows the correct video and that the audio is present at an appropriate level.
- Watch for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, or stream-health warnings while the test is running.
- Verify that the video loops without an unwanted gap, abrupt audio cut, or visible jump. If the file’s beginning and end do not join smoothly, FFmpeg will repeat it but will not make the transition seamless.
- Confirm that the stream is public, unlisted, or private as intended and that its title, description, and other destination settings are correct.
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Input looping handles the end of the media file; it does not keep the Linux host, network, FFmpeg process, or destination available. For a long-running broadcast, start FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, configure restart behavior for process failure, send logs somewhere you can inspect, and monitor the destination’s stream-health panel. Alert on FFmpeg exiting or the destination no longer receiving output. These measures reduce the time needed to detect and recover from problems, but do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
FFmpeg also documents an output FIFO approach that can attempt recovery after temporary output failures and retry after a delay. That is a separate output configuration, not something the basic command above automatically enables; read the FFmpeg format documentation before adapting it. Test any retry setup with your actual destination, because a reconnect may not behave the same way as an uninterrupted stream.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Destination shows no incoming stream | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, an unsupported transport, or a connection failure. | Copy the full URL and key from the destination’s live setup; check the FFmpeg log and network access. Do not reuse another platform’s endpoint. |
| Video arrives but is unstable or drops frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the host cannot encode at the chosen settings. | Check destination health and sustained upload bitrate. Reduce the output resolution or bitrate to a value supported by the destination and connection, then test again. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or keyframes | Output settings do not match the selected resolution, frame rate, or platform guidance. | Confirm the actual output dimensions and frame rate. For this 30 fps example, the 60-frame GOP is two seconds; consult the destination’s current bitrate guidance. |
| Sound is absent, wrong, or cuts out | The source audio track may be missing or unsuitable, or the audio encoding settings may not match the destination. | Check the source file’s audio and the destination preview. Confirm the accepted audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate. |
| The stream stops when the file ends | The loop option was omitted, misspelled, or applied in the wrong place. | Use -stream_loop -1 before -i for the input being looped. |
| The stream ends after a host or network interruption | Looping does not restart a crashed process or restore a failed connection. | Inspect FFmpeg logs, process-supervisor status, and destination health. Configure supervised restart and alerting, then verify the recovery path with a test. |
| A visible or audible jump repeats | The clip’s end and beginning do not form a seamless loop. | Edit or choose a source whose transition is suitable for repetition; looping alone does not crossfade or repair the media. |
Copyright and channel considerations
Use ambience recordings, music, and visuals only when you have permission to stream them on YouTube. A licence may limit commercial use, public performance, or continuous rebroadcast; check its terms and keep documentation. YouTube’s monetization rules also distinguish original or meaningfully transformed work from reused content. A technically valid 24/7 stream does not guarantee monetization or prevent a copyright claim, restriction, or takedown. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and the rights attached to every element in your file.
