The concat demuxer plays files sequentially; it does not make incompatible files match or, by itself, establish a reliable forever-loop. Test playlist repetition and recovery on your installed FFmpeg build before relying on a long-running stream. Clear music rights and any required Content ID allowlisting before launch.
What you need before starting
- An installed FFmpeg build. Option availability and behavior can vary by build, so check the documentation for the version on your machine: FFmpeg Formats Documentation.
- A directory containing your lofi tracks and a text concat playlist. Keep filenames and paths predictable.
- A visual input, such as a still image or a prepared video loop. Treat its schedule separately from the audio playlist; a concat list of audio tracks does not automatically synchronize independent video.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream key. Keep the key private, and use a private or unlisted test event before a public launch.
- Rights covering the music’s use in a YouTube livestream and any replay or archive you plan to keep.
This is configuration guidance, not a tested end-to-end FFmpeg command. Build and test the output command for your FFmpeg version, encoder, media, and YouTube event.

Check whether your tracks can use the concat demuxer
The concat demuxer reads a text script and processes its files sequentially. To join streams without re-encoding, the inputs need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist does not convert mixed media into a compatible set. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Normalize mismatched audio first
If tracks have different formats, codecs, channel layouts, sample rates, or other incompatible stream properties, normalize them to a consistent format before using the demuxer. If the workflow requires conversion or re-encoding as part of the join, FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the concat filter rather than the concat demuxer: FFmpeg FAQ: Concatenating using the concat demuxer or filter.

Check durations and boundaries
The demuxer uses file durations to position the timestamps of subsequent files. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts, while mismatched stream lengths can create gaps. Normalize the media or provide an accurate duration directive when appropriate; do not guess a duration to suppress a problem.
Write the concat playlist
Create a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat alongside the tracks. A minimal list is:

ffconcat version 1.0on the first line exactly, without leading spaces or a byte-order mark, if you want FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. - Add one
filedirective for each track, in playback order. Quote or escape paths with spaces or special characters. - Keep paths relative and portable where practical. The concat demuxer’s safe-path checking defaults to enabled; absolute or otherwise non-portable paths may be rejected. Relocate the list and assets or make a deliberate safe-path choice for trusted files. Do not relax path safety for an untrusted playlist.
- Use a
durationdirective only if you know the file’s accurate duration. A wrong value shifts timestamps for later files and may produce artifacts.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingest and constant bitrate (CBR) video. For audio, YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps stereo. Set keyframes at two-second intervals where possible; the interval must not exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a complete FFmpeg command or a promise of uninterrupted streaming. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance for current details.

- Video rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: two-second interval recommended, maximum four seconds.

- Video mode: choose a mode suited to the visual, encoder capacity, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube transcodes live streams into other viewer formats.
Use your local FFmpeg build’s help and documentation to select an available encoder and the corresponding options. The correct command depends on the chosen audio and video inputs, encoder, output format, and stream key; verify the option order and behavior rather than copying an untested universal command.
Test the playlist, stream, and recovery plan
- Start with a private or unlisted test event. Use representative tracks and the intended visual, not a silent or unusually simple sample.
- Confirm the concat sequence. Check that each track starts at the expected boundary and listen for gaps, clicks, silence, or timestamp problems.
- Verify repetition on your installed FFmpeg version. The concat demuxer documentation describes sequential files and timestamp behavior; it does not establish a universal directive that repeats the entire list indefinitely. Confirm the loop option’s order and semantics against your build, then test that the playlist reaches its end and starts again without a gap or timestamp issue.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube advises checking your upload bitrate with a speed test and choosing settings your connection can sustain.
- Watch stream health and warnings. Test movement as well as audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. These checks help identify problems but do not guarantee a long-running stream will never disconnect.
- Plan process and network recovery. A playlist loop and a resilient 24/7 operation are separate tasks. Decide how the FFmpeg process will be supervised and how you will recover from a process exit or network interruption; the cited official guidance does not specify one required supervisor or promise continuous uptime.

Clear music rights and Content ID before launch
Use music only when your rights cover the intended YouTube livestream and any replay or archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may trigger a placeholder and warning, and continued use can result in temporary interruption or termination.
A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the content.” Ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before going live, and keep written records of the license scope and permission. Troubleshoot common failures
