But do not use Chillhop Music’s catalog to make your own 24/7 stream: its official Creators FAQ explicitly says, “Please do not use our music to create your own 24/7 music stream.” Instead, choose tracks whose written license expressly covers continuous YouTube livestreaming and any archived VODs, then configure, test, and monitor the Pi encoder. No specific Pi model or around-the-clock uptime has been verified for this workload.
First, clear the music rights
“Chillhop” can describe a musical style, but it does not mean the music is automatically available for a creator-run livestream. Chillhop Music’s official Creators FAQ says: “Please do not use our music to create your own 24/7 music stream.” Joining its Creators program does not override that restriction.

What to verify for another music catalog
Before downloading tracks or building a playlist, get written permission for the specific use. Confirm that it covers all of the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- Continuous, creator-operated livestreaming on YouTube—not just personal listening, short videos, or one-off uploads.
- The exact tracks you plan to use and the channel that will broadcast them.
- Your territories and the intended license period.
- Monetization, if you intend to monetize the stream.
- Archiving the livestream as a VOD, if you plan to leave replays available.
- Required on-page credits and any conditions for keeping them visible.
- Content ID ownership and channel allowlisting before the first broadcast.
Chillhop’s terms for eligible individuals are limited to qualifying audiovisual productions on linked, approved channels, require credits, and exclude standalone audio or music paired only with a still image, visualizer, or track/artist name. Its FAQ also limits use to tracks shown in the Creators Dashboard and says not to source music from its web radio or Spotify or Apple Music playlists. Those terms do not make its catalog suitable for the 24/7 format described here.

YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder, an interruption, or termination. YouTube says creators with a license should ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not ensure the broadcast will stay uninterrupted. Livestream archives can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast, so confirm VOD rights before enabling an archive.
Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires a channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days before enabling live streaming. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before configuring the Pi. If livestreaming is not enabled, resolve the channel requirement first; encoder settings cannot bypass it.

What the Raspberry Pi does—and what you need
The Pi is the encoder host: it combines a music source with a visual scene and sends the resulting live video stream to YouTube. A static or low-motion visual reduces the video work compared with a changing scene, but does not eliminate encoding or guarantee that a particular board can sustain the job continuously.

Prepare the stream materials
- A Raspberry Pi running a current, supported Raspberry Pi OS installation and an encoder that works on that system.
- A playlist or other music source made up only of tracks licensed for this broadcast.
- A visual that you have permission to use. If using a still image or visualizer, make sure both the image and music rights cover the intended stream.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus the Pi’s power supply and storage.
- Your YouTube stream key, treated as a private credential.
An audio HAT is optional when the encoder reads digital music files. Raspberry Pi documentation describes HAT selection and terminal configuration for headless Raspberry Pi OS Lite; an audio HAT is relevant if your setup needs physical audio input/output or a particular audio interface, not simply because the stream contains music files.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use a current encoder that supports YouTube ingestion. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Choose a resolution and bitrate
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, accessed in 2026. They are platform recommendations, not Raspberry Pi performance measurements or a guarantee of stable 24/7 operation.

| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
For a largely static music stream, choose the least demanding output that suits the visual and audience. A higher resolution increases the encoder and upload workload; it does not improve the music audio. Do not assume a bitrate is safe just because it appears in YouTube’s guidance: the Pi must encode it and the real upload connection must sustain it.
Connect the stream key securely
In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup, create or select the stream, and copy its stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Use the matching YouTube server/ingestion address offered by the current YouTube setup and the encoder’s RTMP or RTMPS option. Do not paste the key into a public script, screenshot, forum post, or shared playlist. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

The exact screens and field names depend on the encoder and YouTube’s current interface. The older Adafruit Raspberry Pi example demonstrates the general Pi-to-YouTube architecture, but its commands and package instructions are dated; do not copy them as a current installation recipe.

- Build a rights-cleared playlist. Keep a record of track names, rights-holder permissions, license terms, and any required credits. Do not use music ripped from a streaming service or Chillhop’s web radio as a substitute for a livestream license.
- Choose how the playlist repeats. Configure the encoder or playback workflow to loop the authorized playlist continuously. Check what happens when it reaches the final track: it should return to the beginning without stopping the broadcast or inserting unlicensed material.
- Add a permitted visual. Use a low-motion scene if it meets your needs, and make sure the visual itself is cleared for the stream. A static image does not make unlicensed music permissible.
- Set the audio and video output. Use H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds). For stereo audio, set 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Select a resolution and bitrate the Pi can sustain.
- Save the configuration privately. Keep the stream key out of public files and logs. If you save a configuration locally, restrict access to it and avoid sharing it unredacted.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run an upload speed test on the connection the Pi will use. YouTube advises checking available upload speed. Leave headroom rather than selecting a video bitrate equal to the connection’s best observed upload speed; other traffic and fluctuations can affect the stream.
- Start a test broadcast with representative sound and motion. Check the start, playlist transition, loop boundary, visual, and audio levels. A test using only a silent still frame will not reveal problems that occur during normal playback.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator. Confirm that the stream is being received and look for warnings or interruptions. If health is poor, reduce the resolution or bitrate, or resolve the connection or encoder issue before attempting a continuous run.
- Confirm rights and archive settings. Check that any required credits are present and decide whether the broadcast should be archived. Enable an archive only if the license covers the resulting VOD.
- Verify recovery behavior. Observe what happens if the encoder or connection drops, then confirm you can restore the stream and that the intended playlist resumes. A Pi-based setup should not be assumed to recover automatically just because it is online.
Keep the Pi stream running: common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or stale stream key, incorrect server address, or the encoder is not sending. | Compare the encoder’s current destination and key with the stream setup in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Stream health shows warnings or the picture breaks up | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the encoder cannot sustain the selected output. | Check upload speed on the actual connection. Lower output resolution or bitrate, then test again while monitoring health. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or cuts out | Incorrect audio source, output format, or file/playback transition. | Check the selected digital audio source, stereo sample rate and bitrate, and transitions between tracks. Use an audio HAT only if the build requires physical audio I/O or a specific interface. |
| The broadcast stops when the playlist ends | The playback workflow is not configured to repeat, or the encoder exits when the source ends. | Configure a continuous loop and test the end-to-start transition before leaving the stream unattended. |
| YouTube interrupts the stream or shows a copyright warning | A Content ID match or other third-party-content issue. | Stop and resolve the rights issue with the rights holder. For licensed material, request channel allowlisting; do not treat a license as proof that YouTube will allow the stream to continue. |
| A replay receives a claim after the live broadcast | The archived VOD was scanned after the broadcast ended, or the license does not cover the archive. | Check the license’s VOD scope and the claim with the relevant rights holder. Disable archiving unless the rights cover the replay. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you have videos licensed for your YouTube use, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping a Pi and home connection running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo only streams to YouTube, and it does not grant music rights or remove Content ID requirements. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
