Store your Zcash recovery phrase offline, privately, and separately from your wallet device. Never enter it into a website, send it to someone claiming to be support, or save it in an exposed screenshot, email, or cloud note. Before relying on a backup, check how your particular wallet restores funds: Zcash wallets do not all use interchangeable phrases or the same recovery process.
What your Zcash recovery phrase protects
A wallet holds keys that control ZEC. In a hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallet, a seed can derive multiple addresses, so recovering the seed may be necessary to regain access to addresses created after the initial setup. Zcash’s ZIP 32 standard requires a Zcash seed to have at least 256 bits of entropy; ZIP 315 says a 24-word BIP 39 mnemonic is needed when generating a phrase to meet that requirement. These specifications do not mean every wallet’s phrase, format, or restore process is interchangeable. See ZIP 32 and ZIP 315.

How to store a Zcash recovery phrase
Make an offline physical record
Write the phrase carefully on the backup material recommended by your wallet, then verify it against the wallet’s instructions before putting it away. Store it in a private, access-controlled location, protected from casual discovery and unauthorized access. A metal seed-phrase backup plate is one possible way to make a physical offline record; it is not a substitute for choosing a secure location, and no specific plate is established here as tested or endorsed for fire, water, or theft resistance.
Keep it out of digital channels
- Do not paste the phrase into a website, chat, email, support form, or search engine.
- Do not photograph or screenshot it, or save it in a cloud note or other casually accessible digital file.
- Do not share it with anyone who asks for it, including a person claiming to be wallet support. A phrase that can restore wallet control must be treated as secret key material.
Trezor’s recovery-card instructions warn: “Never share your wallet backup anywhere, especially online!” and advise against making a digital copy. Those instructions are for protecting a wallet backup; follow the specific instructions for your own wallet as well. See Trezor’s seed-card guidance.

Separate the phrase from wallet-device security
A private written backup and the data on the device running a wallet are separate security concerns. If you use zcashd, Zcash documentation says wallet encryption is disabled and recommends full-disk or home-directory encryption, regular backups, and controlled access to the machine and wallet environment. That advice is specific to zcashd; check your wallet app’s own security guidance for other implementations. See Zcash privacy recommendations and best practices.
How to back up and restore a Zcash wallet
Use the current backup and restore procedure for the wallet that holds your funds. Zcash’s zcashd backup documentation describes whole-wallet backups, private-key exports for addresses, and exporting a single private key. It calls a whole-wallet backup the easiest option and cautions that a backup made before new addresses are generated may not reflect those addresses. The instructions explain that HD Sapling addresses can be regenerated in sequence from a wallet backup, followed by a rescan.

For zcashd, exporting keys is not equivalent to making a full HD-wallet backup: the documented z_importwallet command imports exported keys but does not import HD seeds. Imported Sapling addresses are treated as standard non-HD keys. The documentation points users who need a full restore that includes the Sapling HD seed to the whole-wallet backup method. Do not assume a generic phrase or key-export file restores every wallet’s complete state. Read Zcash’s wallet backup instructions and the documentation for your specific wallet.

- Wallet implementation: Identify the wallet and follow its own backup and recovery steps. Zcash’s
zcashdinstructions direct users of third-party wallets to those wallets’ guides or support channels. - Recovery format and setup: Keep enough information to identify the wallet and its supported recovery setup, but do not store that information alongside the phrase in an exposed place.
- Address coverage: Understand whether the backup covers addresses created later and whether recovery requires a rescan or other wallet-specific step.
- Safe handling: Never reveal the phrase to test it on a website or to someone offering to verify it. Use only the wallet’s documented restore process.
Choosing a wallet is a separate privacy decision
Zcash identifies hardware, mobile, and desktop wallets as available categories. For transaction confidentiality, Zcash advises users to choose a wallet that is shielded by default. That feature choice does not protect a recovery phrase from theft or disclosure; phrase security still depends on private handling and an appropriate backup. When comparing wallets, check whether shielded use is supported and enabled by default, whether the wallet is self-custodial, how recovery works, and whether any hardware integration supports the Zcash features you need.

The Zcash ecosystem listing describes Zodl (formerly Zashi) as self-custodial and says it integrates with Keystone. A separate ecosystem listing names Trezor, but that listing alone does not establish current support by a particular model for shielded transactions or recovery compatibility. Verify current wallet and device documentation before relying on a specific combination. See Zcash Foundation’s how-to guide, its wallet guidance, the Trezor ecosystem listing, and the Zodl ecosystem listing.
