To store XRP or XRPL-issued tokens safely, first choose who will control the recovery keys: a wallet provider, or you. If you self-custody, keep your seed phrase, private key, and passphrase offline and private; a hardware wallet can reduce key exposure but cannot prevent every loss or make a token legitimate. XRP and newly issued tokens also have different on-ledger rules, so check an issuer’s controls separately from your wallet’s security.
Choose custody based on who should control recovery
A crypto wallet manages access to assets; it does not necessarily hold them in the way a physical wallet holds cash. The important distinction is who controls the secret keys that authorize transactions.

| Factor | Custodial wallet | Non-custodial wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys | The provider holds the keys. | You hold the keys. |
| Recovery | The provider may offer password recovery or support, subject to its policies and access terms. | You manage the recovery material. XRPL says there is no recovery option if you lose the keys. XRPL documentation |
| Main security responsibility | Assess the provider’s security and understand its custody and account-access terms. | Protect your secrets and recovery backup from theft, disclosure, and physical loss. |
| Typical convenience trade-off | Provider support may simplify account recovery, but you depend on that provider. | You control access directly, but mistakes involving key storage can permanently lock you out. |
Neither model is universally safest. A custodian can help with account recovery but becomes a party you must trust. Self-custody removes that provider from key control, while making you responsible for recovery. Choose according to your comfort managing secrets, need for support, and how often you expect to use the wallet.

- Get the wallet through its authentic channel. Use the provider’s official site or other verified distribution channel, then consult its current documentation. Confirm that it supports XRP and the particular token type and transactions you intend to use. Wallet software and its dependencies or updates are part of the security picture; XRPL warns users to consider wallet-provider security practices. XRPL: Cryptographic Keys
- Generate secrets using the wallet’s documented process. Do not invent a seed from a memorable or easy-to-guess phrase. XRPL says account keys must be random enough to be secure. XRPL: Cryptographic Keys
- Keep every account secret private. Treat a seed phrase, private key, and passphrase as credentials that grant control. XRPL explains that someone who knows an account secret can create valid signatures and control the account. Never disclose one to a support agent, website, or person offering help. XRPL: Cryptographic Keys
- Create a protected offline recovery backup. Keep it somewhere unauthorized people cannot access and where a single physical mishap is unlikely to destroy it. Do not save the secret as plain text online, email it to yourself, photograph it into synced storage, or enter it into an unsolicited website. XRPL describes offline signing as an advanced approach with operational-security requirements, not a shortcut around careful key management. XRPL: Cryptographic Keys and XRPL: Secure Signing
- Consider a hardware signing device for substantial or long-term holdings. A dedicated device can sign transactions without exposing the secret key outside the device. Confirm both XRP support and support for the token and transaction types you need: XRPL cautions that some devices do not support every transaction type. A device does not protect you if you reveal your recovery phrase, authorize a malicious transaction, or lose your backup. XRPL: Secure Signing
Do I need a hardware wallet for XRP?
No single wallet setup fits everyone. A hardware device can limit the exposure of keys to an always-connected computer or phone, but it adds setup and backup responsibilities, and its supported transaction types vary. Check the device maker’s current documentation for the exact model, XRP functions, and token-related transactions you plan to use before relying on it. XRPL describes the security role and limitations of hardware signing devices in its Secure Signing documentation; Ledger’s page is a vendor source for its own XRP support, not an independent comparison of wallet brands: Ledger’s XRP asset page.

How do XRP and new XRPL tokens differ?
XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native asset. Other assets can be issued as tokens, and their behavior may depend on the token type and issuer settings. Wallet security protects access to an account; it does not establish that an issuer is trustworthy, that a token can be redeemed, or that its value is sound.
Freeze and lock controls
For issued trust line tokens, issuer settings can allow freezing in circumstances supported by the ledger. XRP cannot be frozen on-ledger using these token features. A custodian may nevertheless restrict access to assets it holds under its own policies or terms, which is a separate matter from an on-ledger freeze. See XRPL’s freeze documentation and its multi-purpose token documentation.

Clawback controls
Clawback is not a universal token behavior. For trust line tokens, the issuer must enable the relevant capability in advance; multi-purpose tokens have their own issuance setting. XRP cannot be clawed back through these ledger features. These protocol rules do not determine whether an issuer will honor an off-ledger redemption promise. XRPL: Clawback and XRPL: Multi-Purpose Tokens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Verify the token, not just the wallet
Before acquiring or using a newly issued token, compare its issuer address and identity with reliable issuer documentation and ledger information. Check which controls apply to that token—including freezing, locking, clawback, authorization, or redemption conditions—rather than assuming a wallet’s display name proves what the asset is. XRPL’s documentation describes how token behavior depends on type and issuer settings: freezes, clawback, and multi-purpose tokens.

Can I recover XRP if I lose my wallet?
It depends on custody. With a custodial wallet, recovery may be available through the provider’s password-reset or support process, subject to its terms. With self-custody, access depends on the recovery material you control. XRPL states: “If you lose your keys, you are locked out of your XRP Ledger account and there are no recovery options.” XRPL: Crypto Wallets and Cryptographic Keys
Account reserve: check the current XRPL figure
XRPL’s accounts documentation lists a 1 XRP minimum reserve to establish a direct account, as of the documentation accessed in 2026. This is a protocol parameter, not a timeless wallet fee; check the XRPL accounts page before creating an account because the amount can change.
