Store vintage games in a stable, cool, relatively dry, clean room, away from direct or intense light, leaks, flooding, vents and radiators. Put each boxed game in a supportive enclosure that fits without squeezing, bending or leaving the package free to slump. Keep the collection off the floor and avoid unregulated attics, garages and damp basements.
Those actions adapt preservation guidance for paper and recorded video to game packaging. They are sound risk controls, but no game-box-specific conservation standard, damage-rate study or tested commercial storage product establishes a single perfect setup.

Why boxes and labels deteriorate
A vintage game package combines several vulnerable materials: printed paper labels, cardboard, manuals, inserts and, in some editions, plastic media cases or cartridges. Damage usually comes from a combination of exposure and mechanical stress rather than one dramatic event.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Light causes fading. Direct sunlight and intense indoor light can alter printed colors. Ultraviolet exposure is a particular concern for paper and recorded media.
- Humidity and water weaken paper. Damp rooms, leaks and floods can stain, distort, soften or encourage biological growth. A dark room is not automatically safe if it is humid.
- Temperature and humidity swings stress materials. A stable environment is preferable to repeated hot-cold or dry-damp cycles.
- Pressure and poor support deform packaging. An overfilled box can compress corners; an underfilled box can let contents bend or slump.
- Pollutants, dust, insects and rodents add risk. Storage locations should be clean and protected from environmental contaminants and pests.
The practical goal is therefore not merely to “put games in a box.” It is to control the room, block unnecessary light and water exposure, and support every package so its own weight does not create folds or crushed edges.

Set a stable environmental range
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends a home environment for video recordings and playback equipment that remains at 55–70°F (about 13–21°C) and 30–55% relative humidity. NARA describes this as guidance for video recordings, not a target validated specifically for vintage game boxes.
The Library of Congress describes paper storage as cool—room temperature or below—relatively dry, clean and stable, with about 35% relative humidity as its paper-care guidance. That figure concerns works on paper and is not a game-packaging study. The two sources have different scopes, so use them as conservative reference points rather than claiming that one number is an official game-box standard.
| Guidance | Temperature or humidity values | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| National Archives and Records Administration, home video-storage guidance, page last reviewed November 14, 2023 | 55–70°F; 30–55% RH | Video recordings and playback equipment; not a game-box-specific test |
| Library of Congress paper-care guidance | About 35% RH; cool, room temperature or below | Works on paper and paper enclosures; publication date was not stated on the returned page |
In practice, prioritize stability over chasing a precise reading. A room that stays within a moderate range is safer than a space that briefly reaches an ideal number and then swings widely. A simple hygrometer can reveal whether a proposed room is consistently damp or unusually dry, but the cited guidance does not specify a particular instrument or accuracy requirement.
Choose the room before choosing containers
Prefer a closet or unused interior room
NARA identifies closets and unused rooms as possible home locations when they provide stable, low temperatures and low humidity. Choose the least exposed part of the home: away from windows receiving direct sun, exterior doors that admit weather, plumbing, heating equipment and obvious sources of dust or fumes.
Treat basements as conditional, not automatically protective
Basements may be dark, but darkness does not remove moisture or flood risk. Check the room’s humidity and its history of seepage or flooding before placing games there. If water can enter, do not put the collection on the floor or directly beside a drain, water heater or pipe.
Do not rely on an attic or garage
NARA specifically cautions against unregulated attics and garages. These spaces commonly experience larger temperature and humidity changes than living areas. Unless such a space is demonstrably regulated and protected from water, it is a poor choice for cardboard boxes and paper labels.

Keep everything above floor level
Floor storage leaves the collection exposed to a small leak, a burst pipe, cleaning water, insects and rodents. Use a stable shelf, cabinet or raised platform that cannot tip under the collection’s weight. Elevation is a water-risk precaution; it does not compensate for a damp room.

Control light, heat and air movement
The Library of Congress recommends minimal exposure to light and no direct or intense light for works on paper. NARA also advises protecting video materials from sunlight and ultraviolet light. Store boxes in a closed cabinet or opaque archival container when possible, and position shelving so daylight does not strike package faces or spine labels.
Do not place games against radiators, heaters, supply vents or other equipment that produces concentrated heat or moving air. The Library of Congress specifically advises keeping paper away from radiators and vents. A cool room with a stable reading is preferable to a shelf beside a heat source, even if the room’s average temperature appears acceptable.
Select an enclosure that supports the package
Use archival materials as a category, not a brand promise
The Library of Congress lists acid-free and lignin-free folders, mats and document boxes as protective enclosures for paper. For a boxed game, an acid-free archival storage box sized to the package is a reasonable application of that guidance. No particular marketplace product has been tested for vintage game boxes, so evaluate the stated material and construction rather than relying on a marketing label alone.
Measure the game and the enclosure
Measure the game box, including any unusually deep cartridge tray, manual bundle or protruding flap. The enclosure should allow insertion and removal without forcing a corner or scraping a label. It should be large enough that the package is not compressed, but not so oversized that the box can fall onto an edge or fold under its own weight.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAvoid both overfilling and underfilling
NARA advises that boxes should not be overfilled or underfilled. Overfilling applies pressure and can crush edges. Underfilled records can bend or slump because the package lacks lateral support. NARA describes using an acid-free spacer board for paper records in an underfilled archival box. Applying that approach to game packaging is a cautious preservation analogy, not a certification for a specific game enclosure.

A spacer should hold a box upright without wedging it tightly. If adding or removing one title changes the fit, recheck the support rather than allowing an empty gap to remain at the end of a row.
Organize boxed games without creating compression
Keep each package fully supported
Arrange enclosures so neighboring boxes provide gentle side support and no title bears the weight of a leaning stack. Avoid tall, unstable piles that can topple when one game is removed. A shelf or cabinet should be deep enough that packages do not project over the front edge.
Protect labels from rubbing
Leave enough clearance to remove a box by its enclosure rather than pulling on a paper label, flap or loose shrink wrap. Keep abrasive dust and rough surfaces away from printed faces. If a package has a fragile flap or detached insert, give it its own supportive space instead of using adjacent games to hold it shut.
Keep paper components together but not tightly packed
Manuals, maps and inserts should remain with their game when practical, while still fitting without folds or pressure. The same paper-preservation principles apply: clean, stable surroundings, minimal light and an enclosure that does not force a bend.
Handle labels and paper inserts gently
Labels often receive the most visible damage because their inks and coatings are exposed on a small surface. Handle a box by its structural panels or enclosure, not by a corner with a lifting label. Before shelving, remove loose dust with a clean, gentle method that does not wet the paper; the cited preservation guidance does not endorse a particular cleaning chemical or procedure.
Do not apply adhesive tape, household laminating film or pressure-sensitive stickers to stabilize a label. Those interventions are not established by the supplied preservation guidance and can complicate later conservation. If a label is already detached, keep it flat and protected inside the same supportive enclosure rather than improvising a repair.

Store cartridges, tapes and discs according to what is actually established
Video tapes
NARA recommends vertical storage for video tapes in their boxes. That instruction applies to tapes and should not be silently extended to every other game format.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Optical discs
NARA recommends vertical storage for optical discs in plastic cases and warns against sunlight or ultraviolet exposure. Keep the disc case supported so it does not lean heavily or fall forward.
Cartridges
The available guidance does not establish an equivalent orientation rule for cartridges. Do not claim that every cartridge must be vertical or horizontal on the basis of tape or disc instructions. Instead, make sure the cartridge and its package are clean, dry, protected from light and supported against bending or crushing. The absence of a published orientation rule is a reason to avoid overconfident storage mandates, not a reason to ignore physical support.
A practical setup procedure
- Survey the room. Note direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, radiators, plumbing, floor-level water risk, flooding history and visible pest or dust problems.
- Measure conditions over time. Use humidity and temperature readings to determine whether the room is stable. Compare the pattern with NARA’s 55–70°F and 30–55% RH home video guidance, remembering that it is not a game-box-specific standard.
- Choose raised shelving. Keep shelves off the floor and away from likely leaks. Confirm that the shelf can carry the collection without bowing or tipping.
- Block light. Select a location without direct or intense light, or use an opaque cabinet or enclosure. Do not place spine labels where sunlight reaches them through a window.
- Measure representative packages. Check the largest and most fragile boxes, not only a standard-size title. Record internal enclosure dimensions before buying storage boxes.
- Inspect material claims. Look for clear statements that a paper enclosure is acid-free and lignin-free, as recommended for paper enclosures by the Library of Congress. Treat this as a selection criterion, not proof that a product has been tested on game packaging.
- Fit one box at a time. Insert each game without forcing corners, flaps or labels. Reject an enclosure that compresses the package or leaves it loose enough to slump.
- Correct gaps. If a row is underfilled, use an acid-free spacer board as a cautious adaptation of NARA’s paper-records advice. The spacer should support the row without crushing it.
- Separate formats where useful. Apply NARA’s vertical-in-box instruction to video tapes and vertical-in-plastic-case instruction to optical discs. Do not invent a matching orientation rule for cartridges.
- Label the shelf, not the game. Use an external inventory or shelf marker so you do not add adhesive labels to original packaging. Leave enough access space to remove an enclosure safely.
- Recheck after seasonal changes. Inspect for new light exposure, condensation, dampness, leaning rows or compression whenever household heating, cooling or room use changes.
Storage choices compared by preservation criteria
No independent comparison of commercial game-storage products was found. These criteria translate the preservation guidance into a buying and setup checklist rather than a product test.
| Criterion | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Clear acid-free and, where stated, lignin-free material claims | These are the paper-enclosure qualities identified by the Library of Congress |
| Internal dimensions | Enough room to insert and remove the package without pressure, but no large unsupported void | Prevents forced bends, compression and slumping |
| Structural support | Rigid sides or a compatible spacer that keeps the box from leaning | Adapts NARA’s warning about underfilled boxes to game packaging |
| Light protection | Opaque cabinet or placement away from direct and intense light | Reduces fading and ultraviolet exposure |
| Location safety | Raised above the floor and away from leaks, flooding, vents and radiators | Limits water, heat and air-movement risks |
| Format handling | Separate procedures for tapes and optical discs; no unsupported cartridge orientation rule | Keeps medium-specific advice within its documented scope |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The basement is dark, so it is safe.”
Darkness addresses light but not humidity or flooding. Measure the room, check its flood history and raise the collection above the floor. Move it if the space remains damp or vulnerable to water.
“A tight stack prevents movement.”
A tight stack can also crush corners and labels. Replace compression with a correctly sized enclosure and gentle side support.

“Any plastic tub is archival.”
A plastic container’s appearance does not establish that it is acid-free, lignin-free or appropriately sized. Verify the material claims and internal fit; no commercial storage product in the available evidence has been tested for game packaging.
“More empty space is safer.”
Large gaps let boxes lean and slump. Use an acid-free spacer board where appropriate, following the cautious paper-record analogy, and check that the spacer does not wedge the package.
“All formats should be stored the same way.”
Tape and optical-disc orientation recommendations are medium-specific. NARA’s guidance does not supply a corresponding cartridge rule, so preserve cartridges by controlling light, moisture, contamination and mechanical support instead of copying an unrelated format’s instruction.

A reading within a preferred range is useful only if the room is consistently stable and protected from water, pollutants and sunlight. A damp basement or unregulated garage remains a poor location even if a brief measurement looks acceptable.
What the evidence can and cannot prove
The recommendations here come from authoritative preservation guidance for paper and video materials. NARA’s quoted advice is: “Store video recordings and playback equipment in an area providing stably low temperatures, low humidity, and protection from flooding, air pollutants, and sunlight.” Its page was last reviewed November 14, 2023.
The guidance supports controlling environment, light, water risk and physical support. It does not establish a game-box-specific conservation standard, quantify how much damage these steps prevent, compare commercial storage products, or specify a qualified conservator for every packaging problem. The 55–70°F, 30–55% RH range is home video-storage guidance, and the approximately 35% RH figure is paper-care guidance; neither is a measured preservation result for vintage game boxes.
Use that distinction to make sensible decisions: stabilize the room first, then choose a clean, supportive, appropriately sized enclosure, and avoid claims that go beyond the format and material addressed by the source.
