What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For stablecoins you need to trade or spend soon, keep only the working amount with a reputable custodian and protect the account with a unique password and authenticator-app two-factor authentication. For longer-term balances, use a self-custody hardware wallet, initialize it yourself, keep the recovery phrase offline and private, verify the exact token and blockchain network, and send a small test transaction before moving the rest.
Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange but transfers full responsibility for the keys and backups to you. The safest arrangement is usually a deliberate split: liquid funds in a well-secured custodial account and savings in a correctly backed-up hardware wallet.

What you are actually storing
A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable price relative to a specified asset, usually a fiat currency. That is the definition used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, 2023; updated 2025). “Stable” describes the intended price relationship, not a guarantee that the token, issuer, blockchain or wallet is risk-free.

The tokens remain recorded on a blockchain. A wallet stores the private keys, or the credentials that control those keys, and uses them to authorize transactions. Whoever controls the private key can generally move the assets. A recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase or secret recovery phrase) is a randomly generated sequence of words that can restore a wallet if its device is lost or damaged.

Choose where each portion of your balance belongs
No custody model is universally safest. Choose according to how often you transact, how much you can afford to lose, your technical confidence and whether you can protect a physical backup from theft, fire and unauthorized access.
| Storage model | Who controls the private keys | Convenience and speed | Recovery responsibility | Main exposure | Counterparty dependence | Network and token support | Typical cost considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange | The exchange controls custody and provides account access. | Usually the easiest for frequent trading, conversion and withdrawals; access depends on the service being available. | The provider handles key recovery, but you must recover your account and satisfy its security and identity rules. | Phishing, account takeover, service outages and policy changes. | High: you depend on the provider’s security, solvency, operations and withdrawal policies. | Support is determined by that exchange; a token or network may be unavailable even when it exists elsewhere. | Trading, withdrawal and network fees vary by provider and transaction. |
| Software self-custody wallet | You control the keys in a phone, desktop or browser wallet. | Fast and convenient for decentralized applications and regular transfers. | You must back up the recovery phrase and secure the device and wallet software. | Malware, malicious browser extensions, fake apps, phishing and signing an unsafe transaction. | Low exchange dependence, but you still depend on the wallet software and the underlying blockchain. | Support varies by wallet and by network; an address format that looks similar may not accept every token. | Usually no hardware purchase, but blockchain network fees still apply. |
| Hardware self-custody wallet | You control the keys; the signing device is designed to keep them offline. | Slower than a hot wallet for repeated actions, but well suited to infrequent, larger transfers. | You alone must protect the recovery phrase and replace or restore the device when necessary. | Phrase theft, counterfeit or tampered devices, phishing and approving an incorrect transaction on the device screen. | Low exchange dependence; you remain exposed to blockchain, token and network risks. | Check the device’s current support for the exact stablecoin and network before purchase and before transfer. | Up-front device cost plus network fees; replacement and secure backup materials may add cost. |
Circle’s USDC education material names Ledger and Trezor as commonly used hardware wallets for USDC. That is an example of usage, not a guarantee that every model supports every version of USDC or USDT. Always check the current manufacturer and exchange instructions for the exact asset and network you intend to use.
Set up a safe storage arrangement
- Separate spending money from reserves. Estimate the amount you need for near-term trading, payments or transfers. Keep only that working balance in a custodial account or software wallet. Put money that does not need frequent access in a self-custody hardware wallet after you have tested the complete recovery process.
- Obtain hardware through a genuine channel. Use the manufacturer’s current purchasing guidance or an authorized retailer. Do not buy a device that arrives with a pre-written recovery phrase, and do not let a seller or “support agent” initialize it for you. Initialize it yourself and follow the current on-device instructions.
- Create and record the recovery phrase during initialization. Write the words in the exact order on paper or another secure physical medium. Check every word and its spelling against the device. Do not copy the phrase into a notes app, photograph, cloud drive, email or ordinary password manager. Never tell another person the words. Legitimate support does not need them.
- Secure custodial accounts separately. Use a long, unique password that is not reused elsewhere. In the account’s Security or Two-factor authentication settings (the label varies by service), choose an authenticator app instead of SMS where that option is available. Save the service’s approved recovery codes offline according to its instructions.
- Start from a trusted login path. Bookmark the real exchange domain and type it directly when in doubt. Ignore unsolicited emails, direct messages and search advertisements that ask you to “verify” a wallet or unlock a withdrawal. A lock icon or convincing logo does not prove that a page is genuine.
- Confirm the asset and network immediately before sending. Select the exact token, such as USDC or USDT, and compare the sending network with the receiving wallet’s supported network. Do not assume that an address that works for one network will accept the same symbol on another. Read the exchange’s network warning and the wallet’s receive screen each time.
- Make a small test transfer. Send an amount you can afford to leave as a test. Wait until the receiving wallet shows the transaction as completed on the intended network. Only then send the remainder. A test confirms address, network and operational compatibility; it does not reverse a mistaken first transfer.
- Inspect before signing. Check the destination address, token amount, network, fee and any contract interaction on the hardware-wallet screen or wallet confirmation window. Reject requests that are urgent, unexplained or unrelated to the action you initiated.
- Record an emergency plan without recording secrets. Note which wallet contains which token and how an authorized family member could locate your physical backup, but never write the recovery words in the same document or disclose them to a helper who does not need them.
Protect the recovery phrase as the master key
Ethereum.org’s security guidance calls the recovery phrase the “master key” to a wallet. Anyone who obtains it can usually restore the wallet on another compatible device and move the funds without touching your original hardware. Conversely, losing the phrase can make a damaged, lost or reset device impossible to recover.

Use a private physical backup
Keep the phrase offline in a location protected from casual access, moisture, fire and theft. Make only the number of copies you can control. If you create more than one copy, store them in separate secure locations and understand that every additional copy increases the number of places an attacker could search.
Never enter it into a website or message
Web pages, pop-up windows, phone calls, social-media accounts and chat messages that request a seed phrase are phishing attempts, even when they use a familiar logo or claim that your funds are frozen. A wallet provider cannot “validate” your phrase by asking you to type it into support chat.
Test recovery with no valuable balance
Before depositing a substantial amount, confirm that the written words restore the same wallet on a spare or reset device using the manufacturer’s documented recovery process. Perform this in private and disconnect from unofficial software. A recovery test checks that the backup is legible and in the right order; it does not make the phrase safe to share.

Verify token, network and address every time
USDC and USDT are issued on multiple blockchains. A receiving address may be valid on more than one network while the receiving service supports only one of them. Sending a token over an unsupported network can leave it inaccessible or require a recovery process that the recipient does not offer.

- Match the token symbol and contract or network name shown by both services.
- Confirm that the receiving wallet explicitly supports that network and token combination.
- Copy the address using the wallet’s receive function, then compare the first and last characters on both screens. Malware can replace a copied address in the clipboard.
- Check the network fee asset and make sure the wallet has enough of the required fee token for a later transfer.
- Use the small test transaction procedure for a new address, network or exchange.
Do not rely on the token symbol alone. Two assets can share a ticker while existing on different networks, and a familiar address format does not prove compatibility.
Run a hardware wallet safely
Initialize privately
Choose the device PIN yourself, create the phrase on the device and verify that no phrase was supplied in the box. Keep cameras, phones and visitors away while the phrase is displayed or written. Install wallet software only from the manufacturer’s official distribution channel and apply firmware updates according to its current instructions.
Use the device screen as the authority
Computer and phone screens can be altered by malware or a malicious browser extension. For every transfer, compare the destination and amount shown on the hardware device itself with what you intended. If the device display differs, cancel and investigate rather than approving the transaction.
Limit signing permissions
When a wallet or decentralized application asks you to approve a token allowance or contract action, read what authority you are granting. Revoke permissions you no longer need using a trusted wallet feature or a reputable block-explorer tool, and avoid signing requests that use unexplained urgency.

Plan for device loss
A hardware wallet can break without destroying the blockchain record if the recovery phrase remains safe. Obtain a replacement through a genuine channel, restore with the phrase using the device’s documented procedure, verify the balances and then retire the old device. Never type the phrase into a random computer program simply because the original device is unavailable.
Operate a custodial account without making it your only backup
A custodial exchange can be appropriate for active liquidity because the provider handles key storage and account recovery. The trade-off is that you cannot independently authorize a withdrawal when the service is offline, restricts an account or changes its policies. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor guidance describes the opposite trade-off for self-custody: you have control, but sole responsibility for the security of the private keys.
- Use a unique password and authenticator-app 2FA; do not reuse the exchange password on email or social media.
- Protect the email account used for the exchange with its own strong password and authenticator-app 2FA.
- Review login, withdrawal and API sessions regularly, and remove sessions or keys you no longer recognize.
- Enable withdrawal allowlists, time delays or address-confirmation controls when the service offers them.
- Keep only the amount required for active operations, and withdraw reserves to your self-custody wallet after a verified test.
- Check notices directly inside the account rather than trusting a link in an unsolicited message.
Regulatory statements do not remove operational risk. On July 14, 2025, the Federal Reserve Board, FDIC and OCC said a particular statement created no new supervisory expectations. That clarification should not be read as a guarantee of any exchange’s solvency, uptime or withdrawal availability.

A software wallet keeps the keys under your control but places more responsibility on the phone, computer or browser that signs transactions. Keep the operating system, browser and wallet application updated, install extensions only from their official stores, and separate ordinary browsing from the device used for significant transactions when practical.

Do not paste a recovery phrase into a browser, import it into an unfamiliar wallet to claim a reward, or connect to a site reached through an unsolicited advertisement. Treat every decentralized-application connection and token-approval request as a permission decision, not as a routine login.
What to do if compromise is suspected
If the recovery phrase may have been exposed
- Stop using the suspected wallet for new deposits.
- Create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase on a trusted, clean device. Do not reuse any word sequence from the old wallet.
- Verify the new address on the device screen and transfer the remaining assets immediately, prioritizing valuable or easily transferable tokens.
- After the transfer, treat the old wallet as permanently compromised. Do not send funds back to it.
- Review email, exchange and device security, then change passwords and revoke suspicious sessions or permissions.
If a transaction was sent to a scammer
On-chain transfers are generally irreversible. Save the transaction hash, destination address, timestamps and messages, report the account to the relevant exchange or wallet platform, and contact the appropriate law-enforcement or financial-crime authority. Reporting can help investigations and block further abuse, but do not assume that a report will recover the funds.
If only an exchange account may be compromised
Use the exchange’s official account-freeze or support route, change the password from a clean device, invalidate active sessions and rotate authenticator credentials if the service instructs you to do so. Check withdrawal history and API keys, and move remaining assets to a newly verified self-custody address only after securing the account.
Match the arrangement to your use case
| Situation | Practical arrangement | Controls that matter most |
|---|---|---|
| Daily trading or frequent payments | Keep a limited working balance with a reputable custodian or software wallet; replenish from reserves. | Authenticator-app 2FA, withdrawal controls, address checks and a strict maximum balance. |
| Long-term savings | Use a hardware wallet with a tested offline recovery phrase; keep only a small operating balance elsewhere. | Private physical backup, device-screen verification and a documented recovery plan. |
| Occasional transfers to one known recipient | Use hardware storage for reserves and transfer through a verified address with a test transaction. | Exact network matching and confirmation of receipt before the full amount. |
| Shared household or business funds | Define who may authorize transfers and how the physical backup is accessed; consider a formally documented multi-person approval design. | Clear roles, separation of duties and a recovery plan that does not expose the phrase to unnecessary people. |
| Low technical confidence | Keep the balance small until you can complete initialization, backup and recovery without assistance from an untrusted person. | Written procedures, supervised learning from official documentation and no disclosure of the phrase. |
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Keeping the entire balance on an exchange: Move long-term funds to self-custody after testing the destination and recovery process.
- Photographing the seed phrase: Destroy digital copies and create a fresh wallet if the image may have synchronized to a cloud service or been viewed.
- Using SMS as the only second factor: Switch to an authenticator app where supported and protect the email account as carefully as the exchange account.
- Choosing a network by habit: Compare the network on both send and receive screens; ticker symbols are not enough.
- Skipping the test transfer: Send a small amount first and wait for confirmed receipt.
- Trusting urgent support messages: Close the conversation and navigate to the platform through your saved, verified route.
- Approving what the computer shows without checking the device: Read the destination and amount on the hardware wallet before signing.
- Assuming a stablecoin has no risk: Separate wallet security from issuer, reserve, depeg, blockchain and counterparty risks; a secure key cannot guarantee the token’s market value or redemption.
A simple maintenance schedule
- Before every transfer: Verify token, network, address, amount and fee; use a test transaction for a new destination.
- Monthly: Review exchange logins, withdrawal addresses, API keys, wallet permissions and device updates.
- After any suspicious event: Stop signing, secure the account from a clean device, move funds if the phrase may be exposed and preserve transaction evidence.
- When circumstances change: Revisit who can access physical backups, whether the stored amount still fits your risk tolerance and whether the wallet or exchange still supports the required network.
Key decisions in one view
Custody is a trade-off rather than a product label. An exchange minimizes key-management work but adds provider and account-access dependence. A software wallet gives you control with a larger device and phishing attack surface. A hardware wallet reduces online exposure for the signing key, but a lost or exposed recovery phrase can still defeat that protection. The safest result comes from limiting the amount exposed to each failure mode, verifying every network and address, and treating the recovery phrase as an irreplaceable secret.
