For a RYOBI ONE+ 18V lithium-ion pack that will sit unused for more than 30 days, remove it from the tool, leave it at roughly 30%–50% charge, and store it below 80°F (27°C) in a dry, sheltered place. Check it every six months and recharge it normally. Keep the terminals away from metal, use only a compatible RYOBI ONE+ charger, and never use a pack that is damaged or modified.

Those numbers come from the US RYOBI ONE+ 18V Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Operator’s Manual and apply to the model families listed below. Battery designs can differ, so confirm the model number printed on your pack and read its own manual before applying this procedure.

The storage settings that matter most

Long periods at full charge, high heat, moisture, and accidental terminal contact are harder on a lithium-ion battery than an ordinary short break between jobs. RYOBI’s US operator’s manual gives a specific long-term procedure for covered ONE+ 18V packs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • When it applies: storage longer than 30 days.
  • Charge level: 30%–50% before putting the pack away.
  • Temperature: below 80°F (27°C).
  • Environment: away from moisture.
  • Maintenance: charge normally every six months.

The manual also says, “It is not necessary to drain the battery pack completely before recharging.” Do not run a pack flat merely to prepare it for storage.

Confirm that your pack is covered

The cited US manual identifies these ONE+ 18V lithium-ion battery families: PBP002, PBP003, PBP004 and PBP004SB30, PBP005, PBP006, PBP007, PBP017, PBP1008, PBP1012, PBP1104, PBP1108, and PBP1112. The model code is printed on the battery housing or its label. A 4Ah pack, for example, is still part of the 18V ONE+ system, but capacity alone does not prove that every battery family shares the same storage instructions.

Model family named in the US manual What to do
PBP002 Use the 30%–50% storage procedure, below-80°F limit, dry location, and six-month recharge schedule if this is the manual supplied with your pack.
PBP003 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.
PBP004 / PBP004SB30 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.
PBP005 / PBP006 / PBP007 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.
PBP017 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.
PBP1008 / PBP1012 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.
PBP1104 / PBP1108 / PBP1112 Follow the same instructions from the applicable manual.

If your label shows a different family, find that pack’s operator’s manual rather than assuming that the numbers above are universal. The instructions below explain the manufacturer’s procedure for the listed US ONE+ 18V packs; they are not a promise that every RYOBI battery uses identical limits.

Step-by-step procedure for storage longer than 30 days

1. Remove the battery from the tool

Press the release buttons and take the pack out of the saw, drill, mower, trimmer, or other device. Do not store a tool with the battery installed. Removing it prevents an unnoticed standby drain, avoids accidental activation, and lets you inspect the pack before it goes into storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Set a partial charge, not a full charge

Before storage, aim for 30%–50% charge. You do not need laboratory equipment to hit an exact percentage. The fuel gauge used with these packs displays broad bands, including 25%–50% and 50%–75%; use the nearest practical indication rather than chasing a precise number.

If the pack is already near the target, leave it there. If it is nearly full, use the tool normally until the gauge is in the appropriate lower band, then stop. If it is nearly empty, charge it until it reaches the target band. Do not deliberately continue operating until the protection circuit shuts the battery off.

3. Inspect and clean it

Look for a cracked case, swelling, leaking material, crushed areas, melted plastic, loose parts, or burn marks. Check that the contacts are dry and free of dirt. Wipe the housing and contacts with a dry cloth. RYOBI’s guidance says not to use solvents, gasoline, or petroleum-based cleaners on the pack.

A damaged or modified pack is not a storage project. Stop using it and arrange qualified service; do not open it, rebuild cells, or attempt an improvised repair.

4. Choose a dry, sheltered location

Put the battery indoors or in another protected location that remains below 80°F (27°C). Keep it away from rain, condensation, plumbing leaks, and damp floors. Do not leave it in a vehicle, on a windowsill in direct sun, next to a furnace, or near a fire, radiator, heater, or other direct heat source.

Keep the terminals from touching keys, tools, screws, coins, wire, or other conductive metal. A metal object bridging the contacts can cause a short circuit and create a fire or burn hazard. Store the pack so it cannot roll into loose hardware; a clean, nonconductive shelf or compartment is sufficient. The manufacturer’s material does not establish that a special case, holder, storage charger, or battery-analysis device is required.

5. Record the storage date

Write the date on a note attached to the storage location or set a calendar reminder. The manual calls for a normal recharge after every six months of storage. This is an interval check, not an instruction to keep the battery continuously topped up.

6. Recharge normally at six months

At the six-month point, inspect the pack again, place it on a compatible charger, and charge it using the ordinary procedure. After charging, return it to a partial charge if it will remain unused for another long period. If you plan to use it immediately, normal full charging for the job is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature: storage advice versus operating advice

The US manual’s long-term storage instruction is specific: below 80°F (27°C). Do not replace that threshold with a generic claim that any cool room is safe, and do not confuse it with the separate temperature statements that may appear in operating or charging instructions.

RYOBI Support Australia gives regional guidance to try to keep storage and charging locations between 10°C and 37°C, while also telling users to store the battery below 27°C. That advice is written for Australia and should not be treated as a universal charging limit or as a replacement for the US manual’s storage threshold. For US readers following the cited US manual, use below 80°F (27°C) for long-term storage.

Situation US ONE+ 18V manual RYOBI Australia support guidance
Storage longer than 30 days Below 80°F (27°C), away from moisture Store below 27°C and in a sheltered place
Charge before long storage 30%–50% Partial charge is recommended
Charging/storage environment Follow the pack and charger instructions; hot or cold packs may wait before charging Try to keep locations between 10°C and 37°C; this is regional guidance
Environmental hazards Away from moisture, fire, heat, and terminal shorts Away from humidity, direct sun, rain, vehicles, fire, and direct heat

A battery that is too hot or too cold may not begin charging immediately. The pack and charger can wait until the temperature returns to an acceptable range. Do not force charging by heating, cooling, opening, or modifying the battery; follow the charger manual.

Short breaks do not need the long-term routine

The 30-day threshold separates ordinary use from the manual’s long-term storage procedure. If the pack will be used again tomorrow or later in the same week, remove it from the tool and keep it dry, but there is no reason to run a special discharge cycle. Charge it normally when needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a gap approaching or exceeding 30 days, use the complete sequence: partial charge, cool and dry location, protected terminals, and a six-month calendar check. This avoids two common mistakes—leaving a pack installed in a tool for months and leaving it at 100% charge in a hot shed.

How to handle charging safely

Use the correct charger

Use a RYOBI ONE+ lithium-ion charger or a RYOBI dual-chemistry charger specified for the pack. A charger intended for another battery system may use different contacts, detection, or charging controls. Do not improvise adapters or connect cells directly to a power supply.

Let abnormal temperature conditions resolve

If a charger does not start with a pack that has been stored in a very hot or cold place, move the battery and charger to a normal indoor environment and consult the charger instructions. A delayed start can be the protection system waiting for an acceptable temperature; it is not a reason to bypass the charger.

Stay alert for damage

Stop charging if you notice swelling, smoke, a sharp chemical odor, unusual heat, leaking, or a damaged case. Disconnect power only if it is safe to do so, move people away from the area, and follow local emergency and waste guidance. Never put a suspect lithium-ion pack in ordinary trash or attempt to repair it yourself.

Safety rules that prevent storage accidents

  • Never place a pack in or near fire, a stove, a heater, or another direct heat source.
  • Do not crush, puncture, drop heavily, or otherwise damage the housing.
  • Keep contacts from touching metal objects or one another.
  • Do not use a pack that has been altered, opened, or repaired with nonapproved parts.
  • Keep the battery clean and dry; use only a dry cloth for contact care.
  • Keep children and anyone unfamiliar with the equipment from handling loose packs.
  • Do not store the battery inside a vehicle, where temperatures can rise rapidly even when the outside air feels moderate.

These precautions address fire and explosion risks identified in the operator’s manual. A battery that merely looks old is not automatically dangerous, but visible damage, swelling, leaks, or overheating requires the same conservative response: stop using it and obtain qualified service advice.

What to do when a stored pack will not charge

The charger shows no charging activity

First check that the pack is seated correctly and that the charger is the correct RYOBI ONE+ lithium-ion or dual-chemistry model. Let a hot or cold battery return to room conditions, then try again according to the charger manual. Do not repeatedly force the pack into the charger or use a third-party workaround.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The pack was stored completely empty

The manufacturer says complete discharge is unnecessary before recharging, so an empty pack was not prepared according to the recommended method. Attempt a normal charge only with the approved charger and while monitoring for abnormal heat, odor, or physical changes. If it will not accept a charge or appears damaged, stop and seek qualified service.

The pack was left in heat or moisture

Remove it from the vehicle, shed, rain, or damp area and inspect it only when safe. Moisture, corrosion, swelling, cracked plastic, or heat damage is a reason not to put the pack back into service. Do not dry it with a flame, heater, oven, or other direct heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery loses runtime after storage

Runtime depends on the tool, workload, temperature, battery age, and capacity. The storage instructions are intended to reduce avoidable stress; they do not guarantee a particular number of years, cycles, or percentage improvement. If capacity has declined substantially despite proper handling, the pack may have reached end of life and should be evaluated or replaced rather than repeatedly deep-discharged.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Preparing for seasonal storage

Winterizing several packs is easier when each one is handled individually. Remove every battery from its tool, read each model label, inspect the case and contacts, and group only packs that share the applicable manual. Set each usable pack to the 30%–50% range, place them in the coolest dry indoor location available below 80°F (27°C), and keep metal hardware away from the terminals.

For a collection stored through winter, use one six-month reminder for the whole group only if all packs were stored on the same date. Otherwise, record each date separately. At the reminder, inspect first and then charge normally; a calendar check does not mean every battery must be charged immediately if it is damaged or otherwise unsafe.

End-of-life and disposal

Do not put a lithium-ion battery in ordinary household trash unless your local rules explicitly allow it. The US manual says local, state, or federal requirements may restrict disposal and directs consumers to their local waste authority for recycling or disposal options. Keep a retired pack’s terminals protected from metal while arranging drop-off, and tell the receiving program that it is a lithium-ion battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A replacement pack is relevant only when the existing battery is damaged or has reached the end of its useful life. The 18V ONE+ system is designed so compatible 18V packs work across compatible ONE+ products, but buying a new battery is not a required part of the storage procedure.

Common questions answered

Should I store a RYOBI battery fully charged?

For storage longer than 30 days, the cited US manual specifies 30%–50%, not 100%. A full charge is appropriate when you are preparing for immediate work, not as the long-term setting described here.

Do I need to drain the battery before storage?

No. The manual explicitly says complete draining is not necessary before recharging. Set a usable pack to the recommended partial-charge range instead.

Can I leave the battery attached to my tool?

No. Remove it before storing the tool. This prevents accidental operation and avoids leaving the pack connected for an extended period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a refrigerator a good storage location?

The manufacturer guidance calls for a dry, sheltered place below 80°F (27°C); it does not require refrigeration. A refrigerator can introduce condensation and food-safety concerns, so use a dry indoor location instead.

Can I keep the battery in my garage?

Only if the garage remains below 80°F (27°C), dry, sheltered, and free from direct sun, rain, fire, and heat sources. If seasonal temperatures exceed that limit or humidity is high, choose a more controlled indoor location.

How often should I check a stored pack?

The US manual specifies a normal recharge every six months. Check the battery’s physical condition whenever you handle it, and check sooner if the storage area has experienced unusual heat, cold, moisture, or impact.

Will these steps guarantee a longer battery life?

No quantified lifespan extension or percentage improvement has been established in the manufacturer material. The steps are risk-reduction guidance: partial charge, lower temperature, dryness, protected terminals, correct charging, and periodic inspection.
