Match the container to the way you use the toys: keep a mixed collection in a lidded bin for quick cleanup, sort pieces into compartments when you often need to find a particular type, and seal Play-Doh in its can or another airtight container after play. Store LEGO bricks somewhere dry and away from heat and direct sunlight.
Choose a storage setup for the way you play
Before choosing containers, consider four practical questions: Do pieces need to be sorted? Do you need to see what is inside? Will the container travel? How much shelf or floor space can it use?

- For quick cleanup: Put a large mixed collection in a lidded bin. This keeps pieces together without requiring a sorting routine.
- For finding specific pieces: Use a divided organizer or plastic drawers when you regularly look for particular shapes, sizes, colors, or types.
- For visibility: Clear or translucent containers make it easier to identify contents without opening each one.
- For a small selection on the go: A portable sorting box can keep a chosen group of pieces contained while traveling or moving between play areas.
- For limited space or a larger collection: Stackable boxes or a drawer-and-bin system can use vertical storage. LEGO’s storage ideas page also names IKEA TROFAST shelving and bins as an option for bricks and sets; it is one possible setup, not a universal recommendation: LEGO’s storage ideas.
LEGO lists clear bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food containers, LEGO storage bricks, and display cases among possible ways to store bricks. Its own sorting box has compartments, clips, and a semitransparent lid; its clear brick-shaped box is stackable and intended for bricks and other small items. How to organize LEGO bricks
Pick a sorting method based on what you do with the collection. If you expect to rebuild particular sets, keep each set or its key pieces together. If you build freely and often search for a certain kind of part, sorting by type or size may be more useful. Color is another option. LEGO recommends sorting by color, set, size, or type, but says the best choice depends on the collection and personal preference: LEGO’s advice on storing bricks.

There is no need to sort every piece before putting it away. A practical compromise is to keep sets or distinctive parts together and put the rest in a general bin. If searching through that bin becomes frustrating, move the categories you use most into smaller compartments or drawers.
Keep LEGO away from heat and direct sun
The LEGO Group recommends storing bricks somewhere dry and away from heat sources. Its guidance warns that direct sunlight and temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. Choose a dry cupboard, shelf, or drawer rather than a spot exposed to strong sun or heat. Keep pieces contained so they do not scatter when the storage area is opened or moved.

Return Play-Doh compound to its original can and close it after play. Hasbro says opened compound can also be stored in another airtight container; its product guidance describes airtight containers as a way to keep compound fresh for reuse. Keep the compound container with its tools or accessories if you want the whole activity ready for next time. Use a separate airtight container if the original can is damaged or does not close securely.
Clean LEGO pieces when needed
For LEGO pieces, the manufacturer recommends hand-washing in water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), using a soft cloth or sponge. Do not put LEGO pieces in a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, or microwave.
