Store the removable Kobalt battery and charger indoors in a dry, temperature-controlled space when the tool’s manual calls for it. Store the cleaned, battery-free yard tool indoors as well; an unheated garage may be acceptable for the machine on some models, but it is not automatically suitable for the battery. Kobalt sells several battery platforms, and its manuals do not use one universal charge percentage or temperature range. Identify the exact tool and battery model before applying any number.
Winter storage in one decision
There are two separate storage decisions: where the battery and charger live, and where the yard tool lives.

- Battery and charger: Follow the exact manual. For the 80-volt KB 880-06 context, a Kobalt Team answer published by Lowe’s on February 19, 2020 advises an indoor, temperature-controlled area. A named Gen4 blower answer gives its own insulated-area range. Do not assume a freezing garage is acceptable for every pack.
- Tool: Clean and dry it, remove the battery when the manual directs, and store it indoors. Some manuals allow an indoor garage that is not temperature controlled for the machine, even when the battery must stay in a conditioned room.
- Charge level: Use the storage instruction for your model. Evidence for different Kobalt products includes both a 30%–50% recommendation and a full-charge recommendation, so there is no defensible portfolio-wide percentage.
If you cannot find the manual, record the tool’s model number and contact Kobalt support before choosing a charge level or a temperature limit.

Kobalt has 24-, 40- and 80-volt products, multiple generations, and model-specific battery lists. A Lowe’s release from 2014 described an interchangeable 40-volt outdoor-power-equipment line, but that historical description does not establish interchangeability between 24-, 40- and 80-volt packs or between every generation. Match the battery to the approved list in the exact tool manual; voltage alone is not proof of compatibility.

Before putting anything away, photograph or write down the model numbers on the tool, battery and charger. Use those numbers to open the current manual. Temperature and charging instructions in this article are examples from named manuals and product answers, not universal Kobalt limits.
Step-by-step winter preparation
1. Read the storage section before disconnecting anything
Look for instructions headed “storage,” “battery storage,” “charging,” or “long-term storage.” Confirm whether the battery should be removed, whether the tool may stand upright or fold, and whether the manual specifies a charge percentage, a recharge interval or a temperature range. If the manual for your model conflicts with a general product answer, use the manual for that model and ask Kobalt support if the wording is unclear.
2. Shut down the tool and remove the battery as directed
- Turn the tool off and wait for moving parts to stop.
- Disconnect the charger if one is attached.
- Remove the battery when the manual instructs. The cited Kobalt mower manual specifically says to remove the battery before storing the device.
- Inspect the pack and its contacts. Keep it dry and prevent loose metal objects from bridging the terminals. Do not store a pack that is cracked, swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged; ask Kobalt or an authorized service channel about safe replacement or disposal.
Do not leave a fully charged pack attached to its charger for an entire off-season unless the exact manual explicitly requires that arrangement. The practical default in the cited guidance is to disconnect the charger except when replenishing the battery.

3. Clean and inspect the yard tool
Remove grass, leaves, soil and other debris, then let the tool dry completely. The 40-volt mower manual advises cleaning the mower, inspecting the blade and placing the machine in a clean, dry location away from corrosive materials such as fertilizer and rock salt. Keep the tool out of children’s reach.
Do not wrap that mower tightly in a solid plastic sheet. The manual’s warning is explicit: “Plastic coverings trap moisture around the mower, which causes rust and corrosion.” If you need dust protection, use only a method allowed by the tool’s manual that does not trap damp air against metal.
4. Put the battery and charger in the correct room
Choose a dry indoor location that stays within the model’s stated storage range and is away from direct sunlight, heaters, water, corrosive chemicals and objects that could short the contacts. A living-space cupboard or other stable indoor area may satisfy a manual that calls for temperature-controlled storage; an unheated shed or garage may not.

Keep the charger with the same model documentation, but do not assume its operating range matches the battery’s. The 24-volt trimmer manual, for example, gives separate limits for battery charging and charger operation.
5. Store the tool in the position its manual permits
Place the clean, dry tool where it cannot be knocked over, exposed to water or reached by children. Follow the manual for folding, hanging or upright storage. Lowe’s identifies upright storage as an option for the Kobalt KPM 1040A-03 mower and directs owners to that mower’s manual for the procedure. That exception should not be generalized to every Kobalt mower, trimmer or blower.
Temperature limits reported for specific Kobalt products
The figures below belong to the named product documentation. They show why a single “Kobalt winter temperature” number would be misleading.
| Product or context | Published temperature guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Kobalt 24-volt trimmer manual | Tool storage: −4°F to 158°F. Tool operation: −4°F to 104°F. Battery charging: 39°F to 104°F. Charger operation: 39°F to 113°F. Battery storage: 32°F to 73°F for one year; 32°F to 113°F for three months; 32°F to 140°F for one month. Battery discharging: 6.8°F to 113°F. | These are duration- and function-specific limits for the models covered by that manual, not a rule for every Kobalt battery. |
| Kobalt 40-volt mower manual | Charge the battery above 45°F and below 104°F. Do not store the battery outside or in a vehicle. | Use the charging limits and the storage warning for the mower and battery covered by that manual. |
| 80-volt KB 880-06 answer from the Kobalt Team on Lowe’s | Store the battery and charger indoors in a temperature-controlled area. The machine may be stored indoors, including a garage that is not temperature controlled. | This answer is tied to the named 80-volt context; it does not establish a rule for other platforms. |
| Named Gen4 blower answer from the Kobalt Team, December 1, 2025 | Use an insulated area above 41°F and below 104°F for the battery and charger. Do not store the battery outside or in vehicles. | Apply this range only to the blower context identified in that answer. |
Notice the difference between storage, charging, operation and discharging. A temperature that is allowed for a stored tool may be prohibited while charging its battery. Never charge outside the charging range in your model’s manual.
How much charge should remain for winter?
Kobalt’s published material does not support one universal winter percentage. On a Lowe’s 80-volt mower Q&A page, a manual excerpt says that storage longer than 30 days calls for 30%–50% charge, a temperature below 80°F, protection from moisture and a recharge every two months. On that same page, a Kobalt Team answer instead recommends a full charge for winter, disconnecting the battery from the charger except when replenishing it, and checking it every couple of months. A separate Lowe’s Q&A attributes a full-charge storage recommendation to the Kobalt Team for a 40-volt battery.
Those instructions should not be blended into a new rule such as “always store at 40%” or “always store full.” They may reflect different manuals, battery generations or product contexts. Use this order of precedence:

- Follow the current manual for the exact tool and battery model.
- If the manual is unavailable, contact Kobalt support with the model numbers instead of guessing.
- Whatever charge level the manual specifies, disconnect a fully charged pack from the charger for storage unless that manual explicitly says otherwise.
- Use the manual’s inspection or recharge interval. Where the cited guidance says every two months, set a calendar reminder rather than leaving the charger connected continuously.
Where can the battery and tool be stored?
| Location | Battery and charger | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature-controlled indoor room | Preferred when the manual calls for indoor, controlled conditions. Keep the area dry and away from heat and sunlight. | Suitable if the space is clean, dry and safe for the tool. |
| Unheated indoor garage | Acceptable only if the exact manual permits the temperatures. Do not treat “indoors” as automatically temperature controlled. | Some Kobalt mower guidance allows the machine in an indoor, non-climate-controlled garage after cleaning and battery removal. |
| Outdoor shed or porch | Do not use unless the exact manual expressly permits the temperature and moisture conditions; the cited 40-volt guidance says not to store its battery outside. | Only if the tool’s manual permits it and the space remains dry and secure. The cited mower instructions call for indoor storage. |
| Vehicle | Do not use for the battery where the cited 40-volt mower and Gen4 blower guidance prohibit vehicle storage. | Vehicle storage is not a substitute for the tool’s specified indoor location. |
Condensation is a practical risk when a cold pack is moved into a warm, damp area. Keep the battery dry and allow any temperature transition to occur in a controlled, dry location before charging. The model manual remains the authority for handling and charging.
Tool-specific preparation
Mowers
Remove the battery before storage when the mower manual says to. Clean the deck and other surfaces, inspect the blade, and keep the mower away from fertilizer, rock salt and other corrosive materials. Store it indoors, out of children’s reach, and do not seal it beneath a solid plastic sheet. If your model is the KPM 1040A-03, consult its manual for the approved upright-storage method; do not assume another mower can be stored the same way.
String trimmers
Use the trimmer manual’s distinct limits for tool storage, battery storage, charging and discharging. The cited 24-volt manual allows a battery-storage range that changes with the intended duration, so a one-year storage plan is not governed by the same upper limit as a one-month plan. Clean the guard and cutting head, remove debris, protect the line and keep the tool dry before placing it in the approved position.
Blowers
Remove the battery if the blower manual directs it, clean the intake and tube, and store both pieces indoors. For the named Gen4 blower, the Kobalt Team answer dated December 1, 2025 specifies an insulated area above 41°F and below 104°F for the battery and charger and rejects outdoor or vehicle storage. Confirm that your blower is the same named model or platform before using those figures.
Winter inspection and spring startup
Follow the manual’s schedule rather than inventing a weekly charging routine. If it calls for a check every two months, inspect the battery on that interval for damage, moisture, unusual odor or swelling, and verify that it remains at the prescribed charge. Do not charge a damaged pack.
When the season begins, bring the battery to the approved charging environment, inspect the contacts and charger, and charge only within the manual’s temperature range. Reinstall the pack firmly, check that guards and controls work, and inspect mower blades, trimmer heads or blower tubes before operating. If the tool will not run after a correct charge, stop using it and consult Kobalt support rather than trying an unapproved battery.

Common storage mistakes and fixes
Leaving the battery in a freezing garage
Why it fails: The garage may be acceptable for the machine but outside the battery’s allowed storage or charging conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix: Move the battery and charger to the indoor, temperature-controlled location required by the exact manual; leave the tool in the garage only if its manual allows that arrangement.
Charging immediately after bringing a cold pack indoors
Why it fails: Charging has its own temperature range, which may be narrower than storage.
Fix: Let the pack reach the manual’s permitted charging conditions in a dry place, then charge within the stated limits. The 40-volt mower guidance, for example, requires more than 45°F and less than 104°F while charging.
Assuming every Kobalt battery should be stored at 30%–50% or 100%
Why it fails: The cited 80-volt material contains both recommendations in different contexts, and a separate 40-volt answer recommends full charge.

Leaving a fully charged pack on the charger
Why it fails: The cited winter guidance says to disconnect the battery from the charger except when replenishing it.
Fix: Charge to the model’s specified level, then disconnect and store the pack as directed.
Covering a mower tightly with plastic
Why it fails: The mower manual warns that plastic coverings trap moisture and cause rust and corrosion.
Fix: Store the mower clean and dry, and use only a breathable or otherwise manual-approved protection method.
Buying a replacement pack without checking compatibility
Why it fails: Battery platforms and generations are not interchangeable merely because they look similar or have related voltage labels.
Fix: Match the replacement battery to the exact approved battery list in the tool manual. A replacement is relevant only when the original is damaged or has failed; it is not a normal winter-storage accessory.
A model-first checklist
- Record the tool, battery and charger model numbers.
- Open the current manual and locate storage, charging and temperature sections.
- Remove the battery when instructed and keep terminals dry and clear of metal objects.
- Follow the manual’s charge percentage and inspection interval; do not combine advice from another model.
- Keep the battery and charger within their specified temperature range, indoors when required.
- Clean and dry the tool, inspect blades or cutting heads, and remove corrosive materials.
- Store the tool in the manual-approved position, out of children’s reach.
- Avoid outdoor, vehicle or tightly sealed plastic storage when the manual prohibits it.
- Before spring use, inspect the pack and charger and charge only within the stated range.
Bottom line
For most winter setups, separate the removable Kobalt battery from the yard tool, keep the battery and charger indoors in the temperature conditions specified for that model, and store the cleaned tool indoors in a dry, secure place. An unheated garage can be acceptable for some tools, but not automatically for their batteries. Because Kobalt’s charge and temperature instructions vary—and sometimes conflict across product contexts—the exact manual and model number should decide the percentage, temperature and inspection schedule.
