How to Store Guinness Cans and Bottles So They Do Not Go Flat

Keep Guinness sealed, cool and away from repeated heat changes until you are ready to drink it. Refrigerate ordinary Guinness Draught cans for at least 24 hours, chill Guinness bottles at 8°C for at least 24 hours, and chill NitroSurge cans at 4–5°C for at least 24 hours. Use the required glassware—and, for NitroSurge, the dedicated device—then pour immediately in the specified way. Guinness says canned liquid remains fresh for up to 10 months after the production date printed on the can, but it publishes no validated storage time for an opened can or bottle.

What keeps Guinness from going flat?

Guinness Draught is designed to produce a nitrogenated pour rather than the behavior of an ordinary carbonated beer. In a can, a plastic widget holds trapped nitrogen. When you open the can, the pressure change forces nitrogen through the beer, creating the surge and creamy head described by Guinness Canada. That widget and the sealed package are part of the serving system; they are not decorative inserts that can be ignored.

Because the package is engineered for that pressure release, opening it is the point at which the intended texture is created. A resealable lid cannot reproduce the widget’s action after the can has been opened. The safest quality practice is therefore to open only when you can pour and drink it, rather than opening a package in advance and attempting to save it for later.

Temperature matters for both storage and presentation. Heat and repeated swings between warm and cold are poor conditions for a sealed nitrogenated beer, while adequate refrigeration gives the beer the temperature specified for its package. The exact target differs by product: ordinary Draught cans, bottles and NitroSurge cans do not share one universal chilling instruction.

Chilling and serving requirements at a glance

Package Before serving Additional equipment Pour direction Freshness information
Guinness Draught can Refrigerate for at least 24 hours A clean, large glass Pour the contents into the glass in one smooth action Guinness Canada says canned liquid remains fresh for up to 10 months after the production date printed on the can
Guinness bottle Refrigerate at 8°C for at least 24 hours A clean, large glass Pour slowly in one continuous pour; keep the bottle from touching the glass No separate bottle-duration guarantee is stated in the cited guidance
Guinness NitroSurge can Refrigerate at 4–5°C for at least 24 hours The compatible Guinness NitroSurge device and a suitable clean glass Follow the device’s serving method after opening the cold can The cited NitroSurge instructions do not add a separate post-opening storage period

The temperatures in this table are product instructions, not a blanket rule for every Guinness package sold worldwide. A GS1 record lists a 5–25°C handling range for one Guinness Draught can stock-keeping unit. That record is useful packaging context, but it is not a universal serving recommendation; follow the temperature printed on your package when it differs.

How to store unopened Guinness

Keep the package sealed

Leave every can or bottle unopened until the moment you can serve it. The seal preserves the package pressure, and the widget in a Draught can remains ready to release nitrogen only while the can is intact. Do not puncture, shake, vent or partially open a can in an attempt to “prepare” it early.

Choose a cool, stable location

Store the beer away from direct heat and places that repeatedly warm and cool, such as beside a cooker, radiator, sunny window or hot appliance. A refrigerator or beverage cooler is appropriate when you are preparing the beer for service. For longer unopened storage, use a stable indoor location and keep the package away from heat; the package label takes priority over a general handling range.

Avoid unnecessary temperature cycling

Moving cans and bottles repeatedly between a warm room and a cold refrigerator makes it harder to meet the intended serving temperature and adds avoidable handling. Plan the chilling period instead: put the packages into the refrigerator with enough lead time, leave them undisturbed, and open only when the glass and serving setup are ready.

Storing and serving ordinary Guinness Draught cans

Chill for the full preparation period

Guinness US instructs home drinkers to let a Draught can chill for at least 24 hours before pouring. This is a minimum preparation period, not a countdown that begins after the can has been opened. Keep the can sealed throughout the refrigeration period.

Prepare the glass before opening

Use a clean, large glass with enough room for the beer’s surge and creamy head. Rinse away detergent residue and make sure no grease, dust or old foam remains. Have the glass on a stable surface before you open the can; the recommended pour is one smooth action, so searching for glassware after opening defeats the point of the procedure.

Open and pour in one smooth action

  1. Take the fully chilled, unopened can from the refrigerator.
  2. Open it only when the large clean glass is in position.
  3. Immediately pour the contents into the glass in one smooth action, as Guinness US recommends.
  4. Let the pour settle in the glass and serve it rather than returning part of the opened can to storage.

The one-action pour is intended to let the widget-driven surge develop in the glass. Slowing down to save half the can, pouring into several small glasses or repeatedly interrupting the stream changes the presentation and leaves no official assurance that the remaining beer will retain its original head.

Storing and serving Guinness bottles

Use the bottle-specific temperature

Guinness US recommends refrigerating bottles at 8°C for at least 24 hours. This is different from the 4–5°C instruction for NitroSurge cans, so do not substitute one product’s target for another. If your bottle label gives a different instruction, use the label for that package and market.

Pour without touching the glass

  1. Place a clean, large glass on a steady surface before opening the bottle.
  2. After the bottle has completed its chilling period, open it over the glass.
  3. Pour slowly in one continuous pour.
  4. Keep the bottle from touching the glass while you pour.
  5. Serve the beer after the pour rather than attempting to store the opened bottle.

The bottle technique is deliberately different from the can instruction. Do not shake the bottle, splash it into the glass or stop and restart several times. Guinness’s guidance specifies a slow, single pour and a bottle that does not contact the glass.

Storing and using Guinness NitroSurge cans

Meet the stricter temperature requirement

The NitroSurge manual specifies refrigeration for at least 24 hours at 4–5°C. The NitroSurge product page likewise instructs users to open a cold can after 24 hours of refrigeration. A colder setting chosen for another beer is not automatically suitable; use a thermometer or the refrigerator’s controlled setting if you need to verify that the cans are in the stated range.

Use only the compatible device and cans

NitroSurge is a device-specific system. The manual says to use only the correct Guinness NitroSurge cans and no other cans or products, and the product page describes the device as exclusive to specially designed NitroSurge cans. Do not attach the device to an ordinary Draught can, another beverage or a can whose design is not identified as compatible.

Set up before opening

  1. Confirm that the can is a compatible NitroSurge can and has remained sealed.
  2. Complete the required refrigeration period and temperature range.
  3. Set up the dedicated NitroSurge device and a clean, suitable glass before opening.
  4. Open the cold can and use the device according to its instructions.
  5. Serve the resulting pour immediately; the cited instructions do not provide a validated storage time for an opened NitroSurge can.

The device is not an optional replacement for refrigeration. It works with the specially designed can as a combined package-and-hardware system, so substituting cans or improvising an attachment removes the conditions covered by the manufacturer’s instructions.

How long unopened Guinness remains fresh

Look at the base of a Guinness can for the printed production date. Guinness Canada says that the canned liquid is guaranteed fresh for up to 10 months after that production date. The statement applies to the canned liquid and the date printed on the can; it is not a promise that every bottle, opened package or product in every market has the same period.

Use the date as a freshness check before you plan a serving. If the can is beyond the stated 10-month period, the cited guidance does not provide a new quality guarantee. Package damage, a compromised seal or storage in excessive heat are also reasons not to rely on an otherwise acceptable date alone.

What to do with an opened can or bottle

There is no validated post-opening storage duration in the cited Guinness guidance. In particular, the sources do not guarantee that an opened can or bottle will retain its original nitrogen head overnight, nor do they claim that refrigeration restores the widget’s original effect after opening.

Plan portions before opening so the package can be poured and consumed in the same serving session. If some beer remains, refrigeration may make it cold, but it should not be represented as preserving the original Draught presentation. A generic resealable cap cannot replace the can’s widget, and no home method in the cited instructions establishes a reliable time window for keeping an opened package.

Troubleshooting a disappointing pour

The head looks weak or the beer seems flat

  • Check whether the package was opened before you were ready to pour. The nitrogen release is tied to opening the sealed can, and no official source gives a recovery period after an early opening.
  • Check the chilling requirement for the exact package. Ordinary cans, bottles and NitroSurge cans have different instructions; use the comparison table rather than assuming one temperature applies to all three.
  • For a can, verify that it is an ordinary Draught can or a compatible NitroSurge can and that you used the corresponding serving method.
  • Inspect the printed production date on a can. Guinness’s freshness statement extends up to 10 months from that date, not indefinitely.

The pour is excessively messy or foamy

  • Use a large, clean glass so the surge has room to develop.
  • For an ordinary can, return to the specified single smooth action rather than stopping and restarting.
  • For a bottle, pour slowly and continuously while keeping the bottle away from the glass.
  • For NitroSurge, confirm that the dedicated device is being used with the specially designed can; the system is not intended for substitute cans or products.

You need to serve sooner than planned

The official instructions set minimum chilling periods, so there is no supported shortcut that guarantees the intended result. Keep the package sealed while it chills, use the exact product instruction, and postpone opening until the required preparation is complete. Opening early and trying to cool the remainder later is specifically the situation for which no validated post-opening duration is supplied.

You do not have the NitroSurge device

Do not improvise with an ordinary can opener, another charger or a different can. The NitroSurge manual and product page restrict the system to the compatible device and specially designed cans. If you cannot use that hardware, choose a package whose own serving instructions you can follow rather than altering the NitroSurge setup.

A practical storage schedule

Buying for a later occasion

When purchasing cans or bottles for a future event, inspect the package condition and, for cans, note the production date. Carry the sealed packages home without leaving them in a hot vehicle or direct sun. Put them in a stable, cool location, then move the quantity you expect to serve into refrigeration with enough time to meet the package-specific minimum.

Serving ordinary cans

Reserve a large clean glass for each pour, refrigerate the sealed cans for the ordinary Draught requirement, and open only when everyone is ready. Pour each can in one smooth action and serve it rather than opening multiple cans early.

Serving bottles

Set the refrigerator to the bottle instruction, allow the sealed bottles to complete the required period, and arrange the glasses before opening. Pour each bottle slowly and continuously without letting it touch the glass.

Serving NitroSurge

Refrigerate compatible cans in the specified 4–5°C range, set up the dedicated device and glassware, and open one can at a time. Use the device immediately and do not mix ordinary cans, other beverages or unapproved hardware into the process.

Common storage mistakes to avoid

  • Using one temperature for every Guinness product: bottle and NitroSurge instructions are not interchangeable with ordinary Draught-can guidance.
  • Opening before the glass is ready: the can’s nitrogen release begins at opening, so prepare the serving setup first.
  • Saving an opened package overnight: no cited Guinness source validates a post-opening period or promises that the original head will return.
  • Treating a packaging record as a serving rule: the 5–25°C range in one GS1 can record is SKU-specific handling context, not a universal serving recommendation.
  • Ignoring the can’s production date: the stated canned-liquid freshness period is up to 10 months from that printed date.
  • Using the NitroSurge device with the wrong can: the manufacturer limits it to compatible NitroSurge cans.
  • Using dirty or undersized glassware: residue and insufficient room interfere with the intended presentation even when the package has been chilled correctly.

The simplest rule to remember

Keep Guinness sealed and stable until serving, match the chilling instruction to the exact package, and pour immediately using the specified glassware and hardware. Ordinary Draught cans require the can’s one-smooth-action pour, bottles require a slow continuous pour without glass contact, and NitroSurge requires both its colder temperature range and its dedicated device. Those steps protect the nitrogenated presentation; there is no official promise that an opened package can be stored and later made to pour as though it were new.
