Choose a safe storage location
Light can damage paper over time. The Library of Congress warns that prolonged exposure can cause fading, yellowing or discoloration, embrittlement and other irreversible changes to paper-based materials. Its guidance concerns framed paper objects rather than board games specifically, but the preservation principle applies: keep boxes, boards and printed pieces out of direct sun and intense light. Choose a dry indoor place that stays reasonably stable. Avoid damp walls, radiators and other heat sources, attics or basements prone to environmental extremes, and spots where leaks are likely. Alexandra Llewellyn’s product-care instructions also advise storing its games away from humidity, dampness, extended sunlight and heat; those instructions are specific to its products, but the location cautions are useful for home collections. Check tucked-away storage areas occasionally for signs of dampness or leaks; no particular inspection interval has been established.
Keep valuable paper-heavy games off the floor, where leaks or spills can reach them. The Library of Congress recommends avoiding floor storage for framed paper objects, not board games, so this is a sensible precaution rather than a game-specific rule.

Support boxes and boards without crushing them
Place boxes on a stable shelf or in a storage box where they remain supported and easy to remove. Avoid stacking heavy items on fragile game boxes or boards. Store folding boards in their intended folded form unless the game’s own instructions say otherwise.
The Game Preservation Society’s institutional manual discusses preserving the shape of outer boxes and packages and uses flat storage for printed materials in its collection workflow. That archival method is not a general instruction to take apart or flatten home games. For everyday storage, focus on supporting the game in its normal form and preventing pressure that could bend or crush it.

Keep pieces and cards protected
Return small pieces to their compartments
Put tokens, counters and other small parts back in the original insert, tray or compartment after play. Loose components can move around, get lost or be damaged. Alexandra Llewellyn specifically notes that its natural stone pieces can chip if left loose, illustrating why delicate components need containment. If the original insert does not separate parts well, a small-parts organizer can help; check its dimensions and make sure it fits inside the game box.

Sleeves can help reduce handling wear on cards in games that get frequent play. Choose sleeves sized for the cards, and check that the sleeved cards still fit the game’s tray or box. Choose shelving or storage boxes to suit your collection
Shelving makes it easy to browse games; storage boxes can be useful when shelf space is limited or when you want to group games together. Clear boxes or labels make contents easier to identify. How much humidity is appropriate?
The Game Preservation Society’s Inventory and Conservation Manual, version 0.1, issued in April 2026, specifies 50–55% humidity for paper materials and outer boxes in its institutional collection. The manual describes itself as a partially developed skeleton, and that figure is a specialist collection standard—not a universal target for every home, climate or game component. A single consumer humidity range for household board-game collections has not been established in the cited guidance. The practical home advice is to avoid damp storage and environmental extremes.
