The safest practical setup is layered: keep only a modest spending balance in an internet-connected wallet, store long-term savings in an offline or hardware wallet, and maintain a private recovery backup in more than one carefully controlled location. You control the keys in a self-custody wallet, but that also means you—not a bank, exchange or support desk—must prevent theft, loss and accidental disclosure.
What a Bitcoin wallet actually protects
A Bitcoin wallet does not contain coins as files on your phone or a physical device. It manages cryptographic keys. The private key authorizes spending, while the wallet software uses it to create transactions that the Bitcoin network can verify.

A recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase) is a human-readable backup that can recreate the wallet’s keys. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to spend the bitcoin controlled by it. Treat the phrase with the same secrecy as the private key. It is not an account number, customer ID or ordinary password, and legitimate support does not need it.

If malware, a scammer or a typing mistake sends bitcoin to the wrong address, there is no central Bitcoin authority that can reverse the transfer. The security plan therefore has to protect two things separately: the keys that authorize spending and the backup that restores them after a device failure.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin.org summarizes the responsibility this way: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.”
Choose storage according to how you use Bitcoin
No single wallet arrangement is ideal for every balance. Convenience, online exposure, recovery complexity and who controls the keys all change with the storage method.
| Approach | Best suited to | Who controls access | Main exposure | Important safeguards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account or online service | People who prioritize convenience and frequent trading or payments | The provider safeguards or controls access to the account | Provider compromise, insolvency, dishonest conduct, frozen withdrawals or changing withdrawal rules | Use a unique password and strong multifactor authentication; review withdrawal and recovery policies |
| Hot wallet on a phone or computer | Small everyday balances and routine payments | You control the keys through wallet software | Internet-connected devices can be exposed to malware, phishing and theft | Limit the balance, keep the operating system and wallet current, and protect the device with a strong passcode |
| Cold or offline wallet | Long-term savings and reduced exposure to online attacks | You control the keys | Loss, damage or disclosure of the recovery backup; setup mistakes can make recovery difficult | Create and test a private offline backup, protect the device and document the recovery procedure |
| Hardware wallet | Savings when you want an offline signing device with a guided interface | You control the keys | Counterfeit or tampered devices, unsafe initialization, lost seed phrase or outdated companion software | Buy from the maker or an authorized reseller, initialize it yourself and keep a secure recovery backup |
| Multisignature wallet | People or organizations reducing dependence on one key, device or location | Several independent signers share approval authority | Lost signer keys, coordination errors and more complicated recovery | Define the signing threshold, locations, succession plan and recovery process before depositing funds |
Compare options on convenience, key control, online exposure, backup and recovery, single points of failure, transparency, transaction validation and your ability to maintain the arrangement. A technically stronger design can be less safe if you cannot operate or recover it correctly.

1. Keep spending money separate from savings
Use a hot wallet only for the amount you expect to spend or move soon. An internet-connected phone or computer is convenient, but a compromised app, browser extension, operating system or device can expose keys or alter a payment. A limited balance caps the damage from an everyday-device compromise.
Keep savings in a cold or hardware wallet that is not continuously connected to the internet. Bitcoin.org describes offline and hardware wallets as savings options because the signing keys can remain away from routine online threats. Cold storage is not automatically safe: the recovery process, physical protection and operator decisions still matter.

2. Separate wallet roles
Use clearly named wallets or accounts for spending, savings and—in an organization—treasury funds. Do not routinely import a savings recovery phrase into a phone or computer wallet. Moving the phrase onto an internet-connected device defeats much of the reason for keeping the savings wallet offline.
3. Decide how much complexity you can maintain
A single hardware wallet with a carefully protected backup may be suitable for a beginner. Multisignature storage can reduce reliance on one key, device or location—for example, a three-of-five arrangement requires any three of five independent signers to approve a spend—but it adds coordination and recovery work. It is an advanced option, not a universal default. Before using it, document who holds each key, where each backup is kept, how signers are replaced and how heirs can recover funds.
How to set up a hardware or offline wallet safely
- Acquire the device from a trustworthy source. Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Avoid used devices and unsolicited links. A genuine-looking package does not prove that a device or its recovery information is safe.
- Inspect the delivery. Check for unexpected seals, damage, prewritten words, a preconfigured PIN or instructions telling you to use a supplied recovery phrase. A device should not arrive with a seed phrase that someone else generated.
- Install the official companion software. Obtain wallet software through the maker’s independently verified official channel. Keep your computer and phone free of obvious malware and use current security updates.
- Initialize the device yourself. Let the device generate the recovery phrase during first use. Never use words printed in the box, sent by email or displayed on a website. Do not photograph or copy the phrase into a computer, notes app, password manager or cloud drive unless the wallet’s documented design specifically requires an encrypted digital backup; for a standard seed phrase, an offline physical record is safer.
- Write the phrase down accurately. Record every word in its exact order and preserve any required capitalization, numbering or additional passphrase. Keep it private while writing it. Anyone watching the process can later take the funds.
- Set a device PIN and wallet passphrase only if you can manage them. A PIN can block casual access to a lost device. An optional passphrase can create an additional wallet, but forgetting it can make the associated funds unrecoverable. Do not enable a feature you cannot document and recover.
- Verify the receiving address on the device screen. Malware on a computer can replace an address shown on the computer with an attacker’s address. Compare the complete address displayed by the signing device with the address you intend to use before receiving funds.
- Make a small test transaction. Send a small amount, confirm that it arrives, and practice signing a transaction. Learn which details the device displays and how to cancel an unexpected request before moving savings.
- Store the device and backup separately. A thief who finds both can take the funds. A flood, fire or theft that destroys both can defeat recovery, so consider separate secure physical locations while ensuring that each location remains private and accessible to the people who may need it.
A hardware wallet reduces exposure while keys are used, but it does not replace a recovery backup, careful transaction review, software updates or protection against social engineering.
How to create and protect a recovery backup
Keep the backup offline and private
Write the recovery phrase on paper or another offline medium recommended by the wallet’s instructions. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ specifically warns against storing it as a photo or in a cloud service. Do not email it, paste it into a website, send it to support or keep an unencrypted copy on a device that connects to the internet.
Store the record where unauthorized people cannot see or copy it and where ordinary household visitors cannot casually access it. A locked, fire- and water-resistant location can help, but the essential properties are confidentiality, durability and recoverability. Do not assume that a physically strong container compensates for a phrase that was photographed first.

Use more than one location carefully
Multiple secure physical locations can reduce a single point of failure such as a fire or burglary. They also create additional confidentiality and access risks: every extra copy is another opportunity for discovery, and an inaccessible location can prevent recovery. Make only as many copies as you can inventory and protect.
Confirm what the phrase restores
Wallets can derive many addresses from one recovery phrase, and some wallets manage keys or accounts that are not obvious in the interface. Follow the chosen wallet’s backup instructions and determine whether the phrase restores past and future addresses, every account, and any additional passphrase or configuration. A phrase that restores only one account is not a complete backup of a multi-account wallet.
Test recovery without exposing the savings
Before depositing a large balance, use the wallet’s documented recovery procedure on a reset device or a separate test environment. Confirm that the expected addresses appear and that a small test balance can be controlled. Do not type the phrase into a website or an untrusted computer merely to “check” it. After testing, wipe temporary copies and return the authoritative backup to offline storage.
Plan for incapacity and succession
A backup is useful only if an authorized person can locate and use it when you cannot. Record the wallet type, the existence and location of backups, the required devices or passphrases, and the people who should receive access. Do not put the seed phrase itself in an ordinary document or share it broadly. For significant holdings, obtain qualified legal advice so an inheritance plan does not expose the phrase during your lifetime.
Protect the devices and software around your wallet
Keep software current
Use the latest version of wallet software and the operating system that supports it. Bitcoin.org notes that current Bitcoin software provides important stability and security fixes. Download updates through the wallet’s verified channel, and be suspicious of messages urging an emergency update through an unfamiliar link.

Use strong device access controls
Set a long, unique device passcode and lock the screen automatically. Use a password manager for ordinary account passwords, but do not place an unencrypted recovery phrase in it. Encrypting a wallet file and protecting a device password can help if someone steals the hardware; encryption does not stop keylogging malware or a compromised device from observing what you type.
Secure related accounts
For an exchange, email account or other online service connected to your Bitcoin activity, use a unique password and multifactor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app or hardware security key over SMS when practical. Ask your mobile carrier about a port-out PIN to make unauthorized transfer of your phone number harder. These controls protect accounts and phone-number access; they do not replace protection of self-custody keys.

Verify the full destination address
Before sending, compare the entire receiving address from a trusted source. Do not rely only on the first or last characters. Address-poisoning attacks can place a look-alike address in transaction history or clipboard data, hoping you will copy it later. For a large payment, verify the address through a second trusted channel and confirm the network and amount on the signing device.
Treat unexpected requests as hostile until proven otherwise
Phishing messages can imitate a wallet provider, exchange, developer or friend. Open the service through a bookmark or an address you already know rather than the message link. Verify unexpected communications using contact information obtained independently from the service’s official site.

Review permissions and signing prompts
Read what a wallet or application is asking you to sign. An approval to spend tokens or interact with a smart-contract-like service can have consequences different from a normal Bitcoin payment. If the amount, address or purpose is unclear, reject the request and investigate using a separate device.

Scams that target Bitcoin holders
Fake support and recovery services
No legitimate support representative will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key. A person who claims to be able to recover guaranteed cryptocurrency losses is making a fraudulent promise; Bitcoin.org says no legitimate firm offers guaranteed recovery. Once a phrase has been disclosed, assume the wallet is compromised, move any remaining funds to a newly generated wallet, and preserve evidence for reporting.
Counterfeit or pre-seeded hardware wallets
Buy only from the maker or an authorized reseller, inspect the package, and create the seed yourself on first use. Never enter a phrase supplied by a seller, a card in the box or a web page. If a device arrives initialized, stop and contact the maker through independently verified support information.
Malware and clipboard replacement
Malware can monitor keystrokes, replace copied addresses or alter a transaction before signing. Keep the spending balance limited, verify addresses on the hardware device when possible, install software from trusted sources and avoid using an administrator account for routine browsing.

Scammers often create urgency: a supposed account freeze, security incident, tax deadline or “limited recovery window.” Slow down. Do not install remote-access software, disclose one-time codes or move funds to a “safe” address at someone else’s instruction. A real service will not require your seed phrase to protect your wallet.
Custodial account or self-custody wallet?
With a custodial account, a provider holds or safeguards access and processes withdrawals. This can be easier for beginners and frequent traders, but you depend on the provider’s security, honesty, solvency and withdrawal policies. Enable strong multifactor authentication and understand how account recovery works.
With self-custody, you hold the private keys and can transact without asking a custodian for permission. You also bear the consequences of a lost phrase, stolen device, malicious software or mistaken payment. There is no central authority that can restore a self-custody wallet after its recovery information is permanently lost.
Some people use both: a limited custodial balance for convenience and self-custodied cold storage for savings. Keep the amounts and purposes distinct so a compromise of one environment does not expose everything.
What to do after a suspected compromise
- Stop entering secrets. Do not type the recovery phrase into the suspected device, website or support chat.
- Disconnect the affected device. Stop using it for wallet access while you investigate. Do not reconnect a compromised computer merely to inspect the wallet.
- Move funds if the phrase or private key may be exposed. From a clean device and a newly generated wallet, transfer remaining funds after verifying the destination address on the signing device. If the wallet is custodial, contact the provider through independently obtained official channels and lock the account.
- Change related credentials. Reset passwords for email and online services from a clean device, revoke suspicious sessions and replace compromised multifactor methods.
- Preserve evidence. Save transaction IDs, messages, domains and device details for the provider, exchange, law enforcement or national cybercrime reporting service.
- Replace the setup. Generate a new recovery phrase, verify it, create backups and review how the compromise occurred before restoring normal use.
A maintenance checklist
- Keep only a limited amount in an online wallet.
- Update wallet software, operating systems and firmware through trusted channels.
- Confirm that recovery backups are complete, private, readable and stored in the intended locations.
- Check that heirs or designated recovery partners understand the documented process without receiving unnecessary secrets.
- Review the full destination address and amount before every payment.
- Use authenticator-app or hardware-key multifactor authentication for related online accounts when available.
- Ignore unsolicited support, recovery and investment promises.
- Periodically perform a controlled recovery test and remove temporary copies afterward.
Safe Bitcoin storage is an operating discipline, not a product purchase. A modest hot-wallet balance, offline savings, a verified recovery backup, current software and deliberate transaction checks address different failure modes. The arrangement is only as strong as the parts you can consistently maintain.
