To store Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP yourself, use a non-custodial wallet in which you control the keys, then secure its recovery phrase offline. A wallet manages keys and transactions; your coins remain recorded on their respective networks. Before sending funds, check that the wallet supports each asset and the exact network you intend to use. On XRP Ledger Mainnet, also account for the current XRP reserve requirement.
What it means to control your wallet
In a non-custodial wallet, you hold the keys that authorize transactions. A custodial service holds the keys on your behalf, so access depends on that service. Self-custody gives you direct control, but it also makes you responsible for protecting the keys and maintaining a way to recover them. The XRP Ledger wallet guide explains this distinction.

A wallet does not contain Bitcoin, ether, or XRP as files. It manages the credentials used to view and transact with assets recorded on Bitcoin, Ethereum, or the XRP Ledger. A hardware wallet is an optional physical device that can keep keys isolated from a phone or computer while disconnected; the device does not hold the coins themselves.
Choose a wallet for all three assets
Compare wallets on custody, convenience, recovery, and compatibility. Do not assume that support for one asset means support for another—or for every network or token associated with an asset.

- Custody: Confirm whether you or a provider controls the keys. In self-custody, you are responsible for protecting and recovering them.
- Access and isolation: Software wallets are readily accessible on a phone or computer. A hardware wallet can isolate keys from those devices while it is offline, with the trade-off of needing the physical device to authorize transactions.
- Recovery: Check how the wallet backs up access and what compatible software or hardware can restore it. Do not rely on a provider being able to reset a self-custody wallet.
- Asset and network support: Verify current support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, along with the exact chain or token variant you plan to use. Wallet features can change.
For starting points, consult Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet chooser, Ethereum.org’s hardware wallet directory, and the XRP Ledger wallet guide. These resources help with selection, but confirm the current capabilities of the specific wallet and device before funding it.
Set it up and verify it before sending funds
- Choose the wallet and check its documentation. Confirm that it supports all three assets and the specific networks you need. If you select hardware, check the manufacturer’s current support information for the exact device and assets.
- Create the wallet and make its recovery backup. Follow the wallet’s setup instructions. Store the recovery phrase or private keys offline in a secure place, and keep the backup private.
- Confirm you can restore access. Understand which compatible wallet software or device can use the backup. Do not experiment with recovery details on an unsolicited site or send them to support.
- Check XRP Ledger reserve needs. Review the current reserve requirements and the wallet’s displayed minimum before creating or funding an XRP Ledger account.
- Verify the receiving asset and network before transferring. Use the address or deposit details shown for that asset in your chosen wallet, and confirm the sending service is using the same network. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking address or a wallet’s support for a different asset.
Protect the recovery phrase and private keys
The recovery phrase can grant access to the wallet’s accounts. Ethereum.org warns: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” Anyone who obtains them may be able to access the accounts and move the assets. Keep the backup offline and do not enter it into a support conversation, an unsolicited website, or a message from someone claiming to help.

Avoid screenshots or other digital copies that could sync to cloud storage. Ethereum.org’s security guide explains the risks and recommends hardware wallets for offline private-key storage.
Understand recovery before you need it
If a phone, computer, or wallet app is lost, a compatible wallet can restore access using the recovery phrase, provided you still have that phrase and the wallet supports the relevant asset. Ethereum.org’s wallet FAQ describes this restoration path.

If you lose the phrase or private keys for a self-custody wallet, there is no provider who can reset access for you. The XRP Ledger documentation states that losing the keys locks you out of the account and leaves no recovery option. This is why the offline backup is as important as choosing the wallet.

On XRP Ledger Mainnet, the documented base reserve is currently 1 XRP for an account, with an additional 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each applicable ledger object, such as a trust line. The reserve is a protocol requirement, not a wallet fee. Requirements can change through Fee Voting, and other networks can have different settings; check the current XRPL reserve documentation and your wallet before creating or funding an account. Some account features can therefore require more XRP than the base reserve alone.
