For storage longer than 30 days, remove your RIDGID 18V lithium-ion battery from the tool and charger. Leave it in a dry location below 80°F (27°C), with roughly 30%–50% charge, separated from metal objects and protected from impact, moisture, dust, chemicals and temperature extremes. Recharge it normally every six months. Use only the recommended RIDGID charger, remove the pack when charging is complete, and take any swollen, crushed, sharply struck or otherwise damaged pack out of service rather than opening or repairing it.

The safe-storage rules at a glance

RIDGID’s battery guidance distinguishes ordinary use from storage that lasts more than 30 days. The long-term procedure is straightforward:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Take the battery off the tool and out of the charger.
  • Store it below 80°F (27°C) in a dry place.
  • Leave it at approximately 30%–50% charge.
  • Keep terminals physically separated from coins, keys, nails, screws, paper clips and other metal items.
  • Protect the pack from moisture, impact, dust, extreme temperatures and chemical vapors.
  • Recharge it normally every six months while it remains in storage.

These measures apply to RIDGIG 18V lithium-ion packs, including the 2.5Ah and 5.0Ah capacities listed for the 18V system. Capacity changes runtime and weight; it does not change the storage precautions.

How to prepare a RIDGID 18V battery for storage

1. Decide whether the storage period exceeds 30 days

If you expect to use the pack again within a few days or weeks, normal charging and use are sufficient. Once the break will exceed 30 days, follow the long-term procedure. Marking the date you put the battery away makes the six-month maintenance interval easy to remember.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Remove the pack from the tool and charger

Press the release mechanism and take the battery off the tool. If it is on a charger, disconnect it after charging has finished and remove the pack. Do not use the charger as a storage stand for an unattended battery.

3. Set an appropriate charge level

For extended storage, aim for 30%–50% charge. If the pack is full after a job, use the tool normally until it is closer to that range; do not deliberately run it to an unresponsive, completely depleted state. If it is already near the recommended level, no additional discharge is needed.

4. Inspect before putting it away

Look for swelling, a cracked housing, crushed corners, a sharply struck area, loose parts, contamination or other visible damage. A pack that has been dropped hard or otherwise damaged should not be placed in storage for later troubleshooting. Remove it from service and arrange proper service or disposal instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Choose a dry, stable location

Put the pack somewhere that remains below 80°F (27°C), away from damp floors, plumbing leaks, direct exposure to weather, heaters and other sources of extreme heat or cold. Avoid locations where chemical vapors may accumulate, such as areas used to store solvents, fuels or aggressive cleaners.

6. Isolate the terminals

Keep the battery away from loose metal hardware and tools. Coins, keys, nails, screws and paper clips can bridge the terminals and create a dangerous short circuit. The safest arrangement is a dedicated compartment or container in which the battery cannot contact conductive objects.

Charge level, temperature and the six-month check

Why 30%–50% is the storage target

The RIDGID manual recommends approximately 30%–50% charge for storage longer than 30 days. This is a storage condition, not a run-time promise: a pack at half charge will deliver less immediate work than a full pack, but it is positioned for a long idle period without being left full. Do not interpret the range as permission to open the pack or measure individual cells.

Recharge every six months

Stored packs should be charged normally every six months. Check the date you recorded at storage, move the battery to the normal charging area, inspect it again, and charge it with the recommended RIDGID charger. Once full and ready for use, remove it from the charger. If you are returning it to storage, allow it to reach the approximately 30%–50% storage level before putting it away again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respect the charger’s temperature protection

A battery that is very hot or very cold may not begin charging immediately. The charger is designed to wait until the pack returns to its acceptable temperature range. Move the battery to a moderate indoor location and wait; do not bypass the protection, force a connection, add external heat or cold, or charge outside the specified range. A delayed start in these conditions is a protective response, not a reason to modify the charger or battery.

Where and how to keep stored batteries

Temperature stability

“Below 80°F” is a storage ceiling, not a recommendation to place the battery in a refrigerator or freezer. Select a place that stays comfortably below that limit and does not swing through extreme temperatures. An indoor cupboard, workshop cabinet or similar dry area can work when it is away from heaters, sunlight and dampness.

Moisture and chemical protection

Keep the housing and contacts dry. Do not store a pack where condensation, rain, wash water or high humidity can reach it. Chemical vapors can attack materials and create an unsafe environment, so separate batteries from solvents, fuels, acids and other volatile chemicals.

Impact and dust protection

Choose a location where the battery will not be kicked, dropped, crushed by other equipment or struck by a falling object. Keep dust from accumulating around the terminals and housing. A protective case or sturdy nonconductive container is useful when it keeps the battery dry, prevents movement and does not trap moisture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Container selection by protection goal

No container automatically makes an unsafe location safe. Evaluate the arrangement against the four protections that matter: temperature stability, moisture protection, terminal isolation and impact protection.

Storage approach Temperature stability Moisture protection Terminal isolation Impact protection
Original battery case or dedicated compartment Depends on the surrounding room; it does not replace the below-80°F requirement. Provides a barrier when kept closed and dry. Good when the compartment prevents contact with loose metal. Good against ordinary knocks when the case is not crushed.
Rigid nonconductive container with a secure lid Depends on where the container is placed. Good when the container is dry and does not collect condensation. Good when batteries and metal hardware are kept in separate compartments. Good against drops and falling objects if the container is not overloaded.
Open shelf or workbench Depends entirely on the room and nearby heat sources. Limited protection from spills, humidity and dust. Requires deliberate separation from tools and hardware. Limited protection from drops, impacts and objects placed on top.

Whichever option you use, do not seal a damp battery inside. Dry the storage area and the exterior of the pack first, without applying heat.

Charging practices that prevent avoidable damage

Use the recommended RIDGID charger

Charge the pack only with the recommended RIDGID charger for the 18V system. A charger that physically accepts a battery is not automatically an appropriate substitute. Follow the charger’s indicators and instructions rather than attempting to improvise an adapter, power source or cell connection.

Remove the pack after it is fully charged

The manual instructs users to remove the battery from the charger once it is fully charged and ready for use. This is especially important when the battery is not needed immediately: charge it, disconnect it, and either use it or return it to the correct storage condition.

What to do when charging does not start

  1. Check that the charger is the recommended RIDGID model and that the pack is seated correctly.
  2. Consider whether the battery has just come from a hot tool, a cold vehicle or another extreme environment.
  3. Move the pack to a moderate, dry place and allow its temperature to return to the charger’s acceptable range.
  4. Try charging again without bypassing any indicator, interlock or temperature protection.
  5. If charging still does not begin, stop using the pack and consult RIDGID service guidance rather than opening the housing.

Metal objects and terminal short circuits

The battery terminals are exposed electrical contacts. A coin, key, nail, screw, paper clip or similar metal item can touch both contacts and bridge them. Keep batteries in a dedicated compartment, not in a tool drawer filled with loose hardware or in a pocket with keys and coins. When transporting a loose pack, use its case or another arrangement that prevents the terminals from contacting conductive objects.

Do not place a battery directly on a pile of screws, against an uninsulated metal shelf or beside tools that can fall across the contacts. If a metal object has contacted the terminals and the pack becomes hot, smells unusual or shows any damage, move away from it, avoid further handling and follow local service or hazardous-waste instructions.

Swollen, dropped or otherwise damaged batteries

Signs that a pack must leave service

  • Swelling or a housing that no longer has its normal shape.
  • A crushed case, deep crack or sharply struck area.
  • Damage caused by a significant drop or impact.
  • Loose components, exposed internal material or other physical changes.
  • Any condition that makes the pack’s behavior unpredictable.

A damaged pack may fail without warning. Do not charge it, install it in a tool, put it back into long-term storage or test it by connecting another device.

Actions that are specifically unsafe

Never open, disassemble, crush, burn or modify the battery. Do not attempt cell-level repair, balancing or replacement. Lithium-ion cells and their protection circuitry are not user-serviceable through household tools. Puncturing or deforming the housing can create a fire or chemical hazard, while an improvised repair can remove protections that the charger relies on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short-term handling while arranging service or disposal

Keep the damaged pack away from people, children, pets, combustible materials, moisture and metal objects. Do not tape over a swollen case or squeeze it into a container. Contact RIDGID service or your local hazardous-waste authority for handling instructions. If the pack is hot, smoking, leaking or producing a strong unusual odor, leave the area and contact emergency services according to local procedures.

How to recycle or dispose of an old RIDGID lithium-ion battery

Never use ordinary household trash

Do not put a RIDGID lithium-ion pack in a household garbage bin, curbside recycling cart or another stream that is not approved for lithium-ion batteries. A battery can be crushed in collection or sorting equipment and create a fire.

Prepare the terminals

Before taking a serviceable, spent pack to an accepted collection point, cover its terminals with heavy-duty tape. The tape prevents contact with metal during transport. Do not wrap a damaged or swollen pack in a way that presses on the housing; ask the collection site how it wants that battery contained.

Find the correct local program

Recycling and hazardous-waste rules vary by location. Check your municipal recycling authority, household hazardous-waste program or an approved battery collection service for the current drop-off instructions. Tell the site that the item is a lithium-ion power-tool battery, especially if it is damaged, so staff can apply the correct procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transport it carefully

Keep the taped battery upright and protected from movement during the trip. Do not leave it in a hot vehicle, place it with loose metal or send it through a disposal route that has not confirmed it accepts lithium-ion packs. If the battery is swollen, crushed or leaking, call the receiving program before traveling rather than placing it in a public collection bin.

Choosing a replacement RIDGID 18V battery

When a pack is no longer safe or reliable, match the replacement to the exact RIDGID 18V tool and battery interface. Do not assume that every 18V pack has identical fit, electronics or approved use.

Check What to verify
Exact compatibility Confirm the model information for both the tool and the replacement pack, including the RIDGID 18V platform designation.
Amp-hour capacity Choose the capacity that suits the job. RIDGID lists 2.5Ah and 5.0Ah 18V packs; the higher figure generally represents more stored capacity, but the specific tool’s instructions remain controlling.
Charger pairing Use a recommended RIDGID 18V charger and confirm that the replacement pack is intended for it.
Warranty terms Read the warranty attached to the exact battery model and seller, including registration or date requirements if any apply.
Seller authenticity Buy through a source that can establish the pack’s authenticity, condition and traceable model information. Avoid unverified listings with altered labels or unclear provenance.

A battery-and-charger kit can be practical when you need both components, but the same checks still apply: exact model compatibility, genuine labeling, warranty coverage and safe storage after purchase.

Routine maintenance checklist

Use this checklist each time a battery moves between work and storage:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inspect the housing and terminals for swelling, cracks, crushing, contamination or impact damage.
  • Wipe away loose dirt with a dry method appropriate for the manufacturer’s instructions; keep moisture away from the contacts.
  • Confirm that no nails, screws, coins, keys or other conductive objects are touching the terminals.
  • Charge only with the recommended RIDGID charger.
  • If the charger pauses because the pack is hot or cold, wait for the acceptable temperature range instead of bypassing protection.
  • Remove the pack when charging is complete.
  • For storage beyond 30 days, place it below 80°F, dry, at approximately 30%–50% charge.
  • Record the storage date and recharge normally at the six-month point.
  • Recycle spent packs through an approved local program, with terminals covered by heavy-duty tape.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Safer alternative
Leaving a battery on the charger indefinitely Remove it after it is fully charged and ready for use.
Storing a full pack for months in a hot shed Use approximately 30%–50% charge and a dry location below 80°F.
Putting a loose battery in a toolbox with screws Use a dedicated compartment that isolates the terminals from metal.
Charging immediately after the pack has been in extreme heat or cold Wait until the battery returns to the charger’s acceptable temperature range.
Opening a swollen or dropped pack to inspect cells Remove it from service and arrange RIDGID service or approved disposal.
Throwing an old pack in ordinary trash Tape the terminals and use local lithium-ion recycling or hazardous-waste guidance.

When to stop troubleshooting

Temperature-related charging delays and an incorrect storage setup can often be corrected by moving the pack to a moderate, dry location and using the recommended charger. Physical damage is different. If the battery is swollen, crushed, sharply struck or otherwise damaged, do not keep testing it to determine whether it still works. The correct decision is to stop using it and obtain manufacturer service or disposal instructions.
