Store emergency power equipment according to its own owner’s manual, then keep it on a documented inspection and test schedule. A fuel generator needs safe fuel storage, engine-specific preparation, and outdoor carbon-monoxide precautions. A battery power station needs a model-specific charge target, periodic recharge checks, and a cool, dry, protected location. Do not treat one percentage, fuel-life estimate, or service interval as universal.
Start with the manual and a written readiness record
Storage instructions vary by engine design, fuel system, battery chemistry, inverter electronics, climate rating, and intended use. Keep the owner’s manual with the equipment, along with the exact model number, purchase or installation date, service records, warranty information, and any maintenance schedule. If the manual is missing, obtain the correct edition from the manufacturer before deciding how to drain fuel, change oil, set a battery charge level, or perform a test.

Create one readiness record for every generator or power station. Record the last inspection date, last test date, observed faults, fuel or battery status, service due date, and accessories required for operation. FEMA’s Ready Business Power Outage Toolkit recommends having a generator maintenance, operation, and fueling plan; a household checklist can use the same structure without assuming that a business schedule applies to a home.
Use a between-storm inspection
- Check the housing, frame, wheels, handles, cables, plugs, outlets, displays, fans, vents, and fasteners for damage, corrosion, contamination, or loose parts.
- Make sure cooling openings, exhaust paths, and air intakes are clear. Remove only the debris that the manual permits you to remove.
- Confirm that required accessories are present: approved fuel container, charging cable, extension cords rated for the load, grounding or transfer equipment specified by the manual, and any tool kit or spare fuse.
- Look for signs of leaking fuel, oil, electrolyte, or damaged battery cells. Do not operate equipment that is damaged, swollen, wet internally, or otherwise unsafe; isolate it and use the manual or qualified service support.
How to store a fuel-burning portable generator
A gasoline, propane, or other fuel-burning generator combines an engine, fuel system, hot exhaust, and electrical output. Storage therefore has two separate parts: preparing the machine according to its manual and storing fuel according to the fuel-container instructions and local rules.

Choose a protected storage location
Keep the generator in a dry, protected place where it cannot be struck, buried under supplies, or exposed to standing water. Do not store it in a living area. The storage location must also allow you to move the unit outdoors before starting it. Never plan to run a generator in a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch, or other enclosed or partially enclosed area.
Store fuel safely, without relying on a generic shelf-life number
Ready.gov advises households to store fuel safely and to check emergency supplies regularly. The safe storage period for gasoline is not one universal number: formulation, container, temperature, humidity, contamination, fuel treatment, and the engine’s fuel system all matter. Use the generator manual, the fuel-container manual, and applicable local fire or building rules for the approved container, maximum quantity, location, ventilation, and whether fuel conditioning or removal is permitted.
Keep fuel away from ignition sources, pilot lights, electrical equipment that can spark, children, and areas where vapors could enter a building. Keep containers upright, closed, clearly identified, and protected from impact. Never transfer fuel in an occupied room or near a running engine. Do not infer that a fuel stabilizer is compatible with every fuel or generator; compatibility and dosage belong to the product and engine instructions.

Before a long storage period, consult the model’s procedure for fuel treatment, tank filling or draining, carburetor preparation, oil level, battery maintenance, and periodic starting. Some manuals direct owners to run the engine, change oil, or drain specific components; others use different procedures. The reviewed government guidance does not establish an across-the-board instruction to drain every carburetor, so do not apply that step automatically.

Keep the exhaust outlet and muffler protected from nesting animals and debris while the unit is stored, but remove any cover or shipping protection before operation. Follow the manual’s instructions for engine oil and filters, and record the date and operating hours when service is completed. A portable household generator may have a different schedule from a permanently installed standby unit or an institutional emergency system.
Test without creating a hazard
Use the manufacturer’s test routine, including the stated warm-up time, load, shutdown sequence, and inspection points. Test only outdoors in the operating position, with exhaust directed away from doors, windows, vents, and neighboring occupied spaces. Do not use a test run as a reason to connect the generator to house wiring through a wall outlet.
How to store a battery power station
A battery power station avoids small-engine fuel-system maintenance, but it is not maintenance-free. The battery, charger, inverter, cooling system, connectors, and software or display all have storage limits. The exact model manual controls the charge target, temperature range, humidity limit, maximum storage interval, and recharge method.
Resolve conflicting charge advice by following the exact model
Manufacturer guidance can differ even within one product family. A Jackery support article updated July 2, 2026, advises users of the products covered by that article not to store the station at zero charge, to store it at around 80%, and to check it about every three months. That article gives a 10–40°C storage-temperature range and warns against leaving the station in a vehicle because parked-car temperatures can exceed the range.

A separate Jackery maintenance article gives different guidance for storage longer than three months: periodically check the unit and keep the battery at 50%, in a cool, dry place within 0–40°C and 0–60% humidity. These figures are brand guidance, not an industry-wide rule, and the difference is a reason to consult the instructions for your exact model and battery chemistry rather than average the percentages.
Prepare the station for storage
- Turn off the station and disconnect every load, solar panel, charger, USB device, and accessory unless the manual specifically requires a connection.
- Inspect the enclosure, display, ports, cables, fans, and vents. Do not store a unit with a cracked case, swelling, liquid intrusion, damaged cable, or unexplained heat.
- Clean the exterior only by the method allowed in the manual. Keep dust and moisture out of ports; never spray cleaner into vents or connectors.
- Charge or discharge to the model’s specified storage level. Do not deliberately run the battery to zero unless the manual requires it.
- Place the station on a stable, nonflammable surface in a cool, dry, protected location away from water, direct sun, heaters, radiators, and high heat.
- Set a calendar reminder for the manual’s inspection and recharge interval. At each check, look for damage, abnormal odor, swelling, leakage, error codes, and a charge level that has fallen below the specified target.
Do not use a vehicle as default storage
A parked vehicle can become much hotter or colder than the surrounding air. If the manufacturer specifies a storage range, compare the entire expected vehicle environment with that range; do not leave a station in a car simply because it is convenient. Move it indoors to the protected location specified by the manual when the vehicle cannot remain within the permitted conditions.
Testing and servicing between storms
Testing proves more than a display turning on: it should confirm that the equipment starts, accepts or supplies the expected load, remains stable, and shuts down normally. Use the model’s instructions for test duration, load, and frequency, and document the result.
What the quarterly and annual cadence does—and does not—mean
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s July 2026 Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit recommends testing generators quarterly and servicing them annually for vaccine-storage facilities. It gives the same cadence for backup battery sources while directing battery users to the manufacturer’s testing instructions. This is facility preparedness guidance, not a universal household requirement. A home user should adopt the interval required by the equipment manual, local code, warranty, and actual operating conditions.

A practical household test record
- Write down the date, equipment model, starting fuel or battery condition, and any warning indicators.
- Move a fuel generator to its safe outdoor operating location, away from openings and wet areas. For a battery station, use the location and ventilation conditions required by its manual.
- Start or activate the equipment using the normal procedure. Note unusual noise, vibration, smoke, odor, heat, error messages, or unstable output.
- Apply only a load that the manual permits and that matches your planned emergency use. Check whether connected devices remain powered and whether the unit’s overload or protection indicators behave normally.
- Shut down using the prescribed sequence, then inspect for leaks, damage, excessive heat, or new error codes.
- Record the result and schedule corrective service before the next storm if anything was abnormal.
Do not keep operating through a fault to complete a test. Stop, disconnect the load if it is safe, and use qualified service support when the manual does not provide a clear remedy.
Fuel generator versus battery power station
Neither category is universally best. Household load, desired runtime, noise tolerance, ventilation, fuel availability, weather exposure, and the owner’s ability to perform maintenance determine which characteristics matter.
| Comparison point | Fuel-burning generator | Battery power station |
|---|---|---|
| Stored-energy task | Keep fuel in approved containers and prepare the engine and fuel system according to the manual. | Maintain the model-specific state of charge and recharge it at the specified interval. |
| Maintenance burden | Engine inspection, oil and filter service, fuel-system preparation, and prescribed test runs. | Charge checks, connector and enclosure inspection, environmental control, and prescribed electronic tests. |
| Operating environment | Outdoors, well ventilated, dry, and away from doors, windows, and vents because combustion produces carbon monoxide. | Within the unit’s temperature, moisture, ventilation, output, and charging limits; do not expose it to water or heat. |
| Between-storm readiness risk | Stale or contaminated fuel, blocked exhaust, low oil, starting failure, or neglected service. | Deep discharge, unsuitable storage temperature, damaged battery, unavailable charger, or connector failure. |
| Test approach | Follow the engine manufacturer’s start, load, run, and shutdown procedure. | Follow the station manufacturer’s charge, output, and diagnostic procedure. |
| Carbon-monoxide hazard | Yes. CDC identifies generator carbon monoxide as odorless and colorless. | Not from the battery station itself, although attached equipment or another fuel-burning device can create separate hazards. |
Operating safely when the storm causes an outage
Ready.gov’s portable-generator guidance says to operate a generator outdoors in a well-ventilated area away from doors, windows, and vents; never use it in a wet area; and never refuel while it is running. CDC describes generator carbon monoxide as odorless and colorless, so smell is not a safety test. Keep working carbon-monoxide alarms in the home, and leave the generator outdoors even when rain, snow, or cold makes placement inconvenient.
Allow the engine and muffler to cool before refueling, and follow the manual for fuel type and handling. Keep cords dry and rated for the connected load. If the generator will supply household circuits, use a properly installed transfer switch or other approved transfer equipment and a qualified electrician. Never connect a generator to a wall outlet to energize house wiring; that can backfeed power onto utility lines and endanger workers and neighbors.

Between-storm checklist
- Documentation: Manual, model number, service history, test log, and next service date are together and readable.
- Condition: No cracks, corrosion, swelling, leaks, blocked vents, damaged cords, loose connectors, or missing accessories.
- Fuel equipment: Fuel is in approved, closed containers in the permitted location; the generator’s preparation follows its own manual.
- Battery equipment: Charge level matches the exact model’s storage instruction; the station is disconnected, clean, dry, and protected from temperature extremes.
- Testing: The next test is scheduled according to the manual and application; the last result and any corrective action are recorded.
- Safety: Carbon-monoxide alarms work, outdoor operating space is available, cords are suitable, and transfer equipment is installed correctly if needed.
- Accessibility: The equipment can be moved safely without searching through storm debris, and the required charger, fuel container, cables, and instructions are immediately available.
Symptoms that require a stop-and-service decision
- Fuel odor, wet spots, or a leaking line: Stop using the generator, keep ignition sources away, and follow the manual and local safety guidance for isolation and service.
- Hard starting, surging, repeated shutdowns, or unstable output: Do not compensate by adding an unapproved fuel additive or oversized load; use the troubleshooting section for that model and arrange service if the cause is not clear.
- Smoke, burning odor, excessive heat, or abnormal vibration: Shut down if it is safe, disconnect loads, keep clear of hot components, and obtain qualified service.
- Battery swelling, cracked housing, leakage, or rapid loss of charge: Stop charging and using the station. Do not puncture, open, compress, or place a damaged battery in normal waste; follow the manufacturer’s safety and disposal instructions.
- Error code or failed self-test: Record the exact code and conditions, consult the manual, and do not erase the evidence by repeatedly cycling the unit.
How to choose a maintenance plan
Use the strictest applicable requirement: the owner’s manual, a local code or installation requirement, a warranty condition, or the operating environment. If the unit supports critical medical, refrigeration, communications, or life-safety loads, involve a qualified technician and test under the same type of load you expect during an outage.
For a fuel generator, the plan should answer where it will run, where fuel will be stored, how the engine will be prepared, who performs service, and how carbon-monoxide protection will be verified. For a battery station, it should answer the exact storage percentage, recharge interval, permitted temperature and humidity, charger location, expected loads, and battery-disposal procedure. Revisit the plan after every storm, repair, relocation, or change in the devices you intend to power.
