The safe way to store a home backup battery depends on the exact product. A portable power station that you unplug and put on a shelf has different requirements from a permanently installed residential battery connected to a gateway, inverter, or solar array. Identify the manufacturer and model first, then follow that manual’s storage charge, temperature, inspection, and service instructions. There is no universal “leave it at 50%” rule or recharge interval that applies to every chemistry and system.
For example, Goal Zero specifies a different routine for its Yeti 1000/1500 stations than EcoFlow specifies for the GLACIER plug-in battery. Tesla’s Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 manuals say no scheduled preventive maintenance is required, while Victron gives a physical shut-down procedure for extended storage. The procedures below show how to turn those model-specific directions into a practical between-outage routine without opening an enclosure or attempting high-voltage repairs.

Start with the exact battery and its role in the home
Read the label, app, inverter display, or installation paperwork and record the manufacturer, model, and serial number. Also note whether the unit is portable or permanently installed. This distinction determines what you may safely do yourself.
Portable power stations
A portable station is a self-contained product that an owner can normally plug into a household outlet, switch off, move, and store. Its manual usually provides a target state of charge (SOC), a recharge or exercise interval, and an allowed storage environment. Those values are product-specific. A routine suitable for one lithium station can shorten the life of another or leave it unable to start after a long shelf period.

Permanently installed residential batteries
An installed battery is part of an electrical system. It may be connected to a gateway, inverter, solar equipment, a main service panel, and communications hardware. Owner maintenance is generally limited to visual checks, keeping ventilation clear, reading system alerts, and arranging qualified service. Do not remove covers, disconnect high-voltage conductors, change protective settings, or improvise a charging method based on advice for portable equipment.
Why the distinction matters
Manufacturers can specify different storage SOCs, check intervals, temperature limits, and shutdown methods even for products using similar battery chemistry. The instructions in the current manual for your exact model take precedence over a generic battery-care article.
Build a between-outage maintenance calendar
Once you know the model, put its requirements on a calendar. A useful record includes the last full charge or storage cycle, the date of the next check, any displayed alerts, and the serial number. Keep the manual and the manufacturer’s support contact with that record.

At every visual check
- Look for swelling, cracks, liquid, corrosion, melted plastic, unusual odor, soot, or signs of heat.
- Confirm that vents, fans, air intakes, exhausts, and the space around the unit are not blocked by boxes, dust, leaves, insulation, or stored materials.
- Check that cables and plugs are seated, undamaged, and not warm or discolored.
- Read the display or app for fault codes, temperature warnings, communication failures, or a rapidly declining SOC.
- Verify that the unit remains in the environment allowed by its manual; do not assume a garage, attic, shed, or unconditioned basement is suitable.
For an installed system, these observations are usually the complete owner task unless the manufacturer explicitly lists another user action. A clean exterior does not authorize opening the enclosure.
Record what you find
Write down the date, SOC, ambient conditions if relevant, and any alert text exactly as shown. Photos of the display and exterior can help support staff diagnose an intermittent problem. Do not clear an alert repeatedly without understanding its cause; the event history may be needed for a safety assessment or warranty decision.

Portable power stations: follow the model’s storage cycle
Portable products illustrate why one universal storage percentage is unsafe advice. The following examples apply only to the named models and are not substitutes for your product’s manual.
Goal Zero Yeti 1000/1500
Goal Zero Customer Support says to keep a Yeti 1000 or 1500 plugged in, in a dry, climate-controlled place, with the power button off, so it remains ready at full charge. If the station is unplugged, the cited support guidance says to charge it every 3–6 months. The support page was updated March 10, 2026.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Place the station in a dry, climate-controlled location with its air openings unobstructed.
- Turn the station’s power button off while it is being kept plugged in.
- If you choose to store it unplugged, put a recurring reminder on the calendar for a charge at least within the stated 3–6-month interval.
- After charging, check the display, inspect the cable and enclosure, and return it to the same clear, dry location.
Do not transfer this “full while plugged in” instruction to another Yeti model or another brand. Confirm the exact model family before using it.
EcoFlow GLACIER plug-in battery
The GLACIER plug-in battery manual specifies a dry, cool, well-ventilated storage environment from 15°C to 35°C. For long-term storage, it directs the owner to charge and discharge the battery once every three months, then leave it at 60% charge. If the battery fell below 1% after use, the manual says to charge it to 60% for storage. It warns against leaving the battery uncharged or unused for more than six months.
- Move the battery to a dry, cool, well-ventilated location maintained between 15°C and 35°C.
- Every three months, perform the manual’s charge-and-discharge cycle.
- At the end of that cycle, set the battery to 60% SOC before putting it back into storage.
- If a use event took it below 1%, recharge to 60% rather than leaving it nearly empty.
- Do not allow more than six months to pass with the battery uncharged or unused.
The GLACIER routine conflicts with the Goal Zero example in both target SOC and interval. That difference is exactly why a generic storage percentage is misleading.

Other portable stations
For any other model, look for sections titled “long-term storage,” “storage,” “battery maintenance,” or “transport.” Check whether the maker requires a periodic exercise cycle, continuous mains connection, a partial SOC, or a physical shutdown. If the manual is silent, contact the manufacturer rather than borrowing a number from a different product.

Victron Lithium SuperPack NG guidance
Victron’s guidance for the Lithium SuperPack NG family recommends disconnecting loads and switching the battery off with its physical push button for extended storage. Turning it off only through the app leaves Bluetooth active, so an app shutdown is not equivalent to a complete physical shutdown. The same guidance recommends avoiding discharge below 10% SOC whenever possible.
- Disconnect the loads connected to the battery.
- Use the battery’s physical push button to switch it off.
- Confirm that the unit is no longer supplying loads and that the intended indicators are off.
- Keep the battery above 10% SOC when possible, following the model’s own low-voltage and storage directions.
These steps apply to the cited Victron family only. Do not press a shutdown control, disconnect wiring, or change an installed system’s configuration unless the manual identifies that action as an owner procedure.
Permanently installed systems: what owners should and should not maintain
Tesla Powerwall 2 and Gateway
The Powerwall 2 Owner Manual states that Powerwall and the Gateway do not require pre-scheduled preventive maintenance. The owner’s practical job is to keep the equipment and especially its air intakes and exhausts clear of debris. Do not schedule a routine enclosure opening or internal cleaning unless Tesla or an authorized service provider instructs you to do so.
The same manual lists an operating range of -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F) and an optimum ambient range of 0°C to 30°C (32°F to 86°F). These are operating specifications, not a blanket storage limit. They should not be used to decide where to store another battery or to justify exposing a disconnected unit to extreme conditions.

Tesla Powerwall 3
The Powerwall 3 Owner Manual also says that Powerwall 3 does not require pre-scheduled preventive maintenance. Keep nearby airflow areas clear and watch the system’s status notifications. Its stated operating range is -20°C to 50°C, and performance may be de-rated above 40°C. A de-rating warning is a performance and thermal-management issue, not permission to modify settings or add an improvised fan.
Airflow and surroundings
For any installed system, maintain the clearances specified in the installation manual. Do not stack equipment against the enclosure, paint over vents, build a shelf that restricts exhaust, or store combustible materials nearby. Remove only loose exterior debris that can be cleared without tools; leave internal dust removal and electrical work to qualified personnel.
Temperature, moisture, and location decisions
Choose a location using the model’s storage specification, not a broad label such as “lithium battery.” A manual may give separate ranges for operation, charging, and storage. Treat those ranges as different limits.
- Temperature: Use the stated storage range where one is provided. The EcoFlow GLACIER figure of 15°C–35°C is a storage requirement for that plug-in battery, while Tesla’s -20°C to 50°C figures are operating ranges for named Powerwall models.
- Moisture: Keep portable equipment dry and protected from condensation, leaks, flooding, and direct precipitation. A waterproof case does not necessarily mean the battery may be operated or charged while wet.
- Ventilation: Preserve the clear airflow path specified by the manufacturer. Do not put a powered or charging station in a sealed box, under bedding, or against an air intake.
- Sun and heat sources: Avoid direct sun, vehicle interiors, heaters, boilers, and other locations that can push the enclosure beyond its rated conditions.
- Physical security: Prevent tipping, crushing, impact, and access by children or pets. Keep connectors protected from metal objects that could bridge contacts.
Safety checks, alerts, and recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that battery incidents can occur during use, storage, and charging. Potential hazards include overheating and fire. It emphasizes that high-energy-density batteries need additional care and that the battery, charger, and intended product should be evaluated together as a system.
Stop using a battery that appears abnormal
If you see swelling, smoke, flame, leaking material, severe heat, a burning smell, visible impact damage, or repeated thermal alerts, stop normal use and follow the manufacturer’s emergency instructions. Keep people away, avoid touching a hot or damaged unit, and contact emergency services if there is an active fire or immediate danger. Do not open the enclosure, puncture the casing, move a damaged high-energy battery unnecessarily, or try to repair a high-voltage system.

Check the exact recall status
On November 13, 2025, the CPSC announced a recall covering about 10,500 certain Powerwall 2 systems. The notice described affected cells that could cause a unit to stop functioning during normal use and potentially lead to overheating, smoke, or flame; replacement was listed as the remedy. This does not mean every Powerwall 2 is affected. Check the exact model and serial-number range in the current CPSC notice and the manufacturer’s remedy information.
Make recall checking part of ownership after a move, installation, or change of contact details. Register the product when available so safety notices reach the current owner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preparing the battery for the next outage
Between-outage care is not only long-term storage. A short readiness check helps ensure that the battery can deliver power when needed without violating its model instructions.
- Confirm status: Read the SOC, operating mode, and any alerts in the display or app.
- Inspect access: Make sure vents, the service area, and required disconnects are not blocked.
- Check connections: Look for damaged cords, loose plugs, corrosion, or heat discoloration; replace only parts approved for the model.
- Review the load plan: Know which circuits or devices the system is designed to support. Do not exceed the rated output by adding unplanned heaters, pumps, or appliances.
- Verify communications: Confirm that the app or gateway reports current status, but do not treat a Bluetooth or cloud connection as proof that a battery is physically powered off.
- Test only as instructed: If the manufacturer provides a self-test or exercise procedure, follow it exactly. Do not invent a deep-discharge test to “keep the cells healthy.”
What to do when the battery will be unused for months
Use this decision path after identifying the model:
- Find the storage section of the manual. Record the required SOC, check interval, temperature, ventilation, and shutdown method.
- Separate operating limits from storage limits. If the manual lists only operating temperatures, ask the manufacturer whether storage has a different range.
- Prepare the location. Make it dry, clear, ventilated, and protected from impact and unauthorized access.
- Apply the model-specific charge or exercise routine. For example, the cited Goal Zero routine uses continuous plugging or a 3–6-month recharge interval when unplugged; the cited GLACIER routine uses a three-month cycle ending at 60%.
- Use the required shutdown. For the cited Victron guidance, that means disconnecting loads and using the physical button rather than only the app.
- Set reminders. Schedule the next inspection or cycle before putting the unit away.
- Escalate abnormalities. Contact manufacturer support or a qualified installer for faults, damage, unusual heat, or unclear instructions.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
| Mistake | Why it can fail | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping every battery at 50% SOC | Manufacturers specify different storage targets; some products require full charge or a cycle ending at a particular percentage. | Use the exact model’s storage instruction. |
| Applying a portable-station routine to a wall battery | Installed systems include high-voltage equipment, gateways, and installation clearances that portable guidance does not address. | Limit owner care to the installed system manual and qualified service directions. |
| Treating an operating temperature as a storage limit | Operating, charging, and storage ranges can differ. | Find the separate storage specification or ask the manufacturer. |
| Shutting down only in an app | Some hardware remains powered for communications; Victron specifically notes Bluetooth remains active after app shutdown. | Use the physical shutdown method required by that model. |
| Blocking vents while storing | Restricted airflow can increase heat and prevent normal operation. | Keep intakes and exhausts clear, including around installed units. |
| Ignoring a warning until the next outage | Overheating, smoke, or loss of function can develop while the system is idle or charging. | Follow the alert and emergency instructions immediately. |
| Assuming a recall affects every unit in a product line | Recalls usually cover specific models, serial ranges, or production batches. | Check the current notice using the exact model and serial number. |
How to compare storage requirements when choosing a battery
If you are evaluating systems, compare the maintenance framework rather than searching for a single “best” storage percentage. The useful questions are:
| Decision axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Product type | Portable station or permanently installed residential system? |
| Long-storage SOC | Does the maker require full charge, partial charge, or a cycle ending at a specified percentage? |
| Check interval | Is the battery kept plugged in, recharged every few months, exercised quarterly, or managed automatically? |
| Environment | Are storage and operating temperatures stated separately? What moisture and ventilation conditions are required? |
| Owner maintenance | What can the owner inspect or clean without tools, and what requires an installer or service provider? |
| Support and recalls | Can you obtain current manuals, register the serial number, receive alerts, and verify remedies? |
The cited manufacturer instructions demonstrate variation; they are not a controlled performance test or a ranking of products.
When to call support or a qualified technician
Contact the manufacturer or installer when the manual does not state a storage procedure, the product is installed as part of a hard-wired system, an alert persists after the prescribed reset, the battery will not accept or hold charge, or the unit has suffered impact, water exposure, overheating, or a suspected recall condition. Provide the model, serial number, alert text, dates, and photos of the exterior and display. Do not bypass a fault, substitute a charger, or open the enclosure while waiting for guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFollowing the exact model’s routine is the core maintenance strategy: use the specified charge and check interval, keep the environment within the stated limits, preserve airflow, and treat abnormal heat or damage as a safety issue rather than a normal maintenance task.
