Store the Xbox Series X or Series S retail box indoors, elevated from the floor, in a cool, dry, shaded place away from leaks, condensation, sunlight and heaters. For the best protection, place the closed retail package inside a sturdy corrugated carton with clean, non-abrasive cushioning on every side so it cannot slide. Keep weight off the carton, especially its top and corners, and do not power on a console while it remains enclosed in packaging.
The original package is printed paperboard, so it can be crushed, abraded, stained or distorted even when the console itself is safe. The method below protects the box while keeping its labels, inserts and accessories together for a future move, sale or warranty-related shipment.

What the Xbox Series X and Series S boxes are made to withstand
Microsoft’s ecoprofiles identify the retail packaging as corrugated board, paper and foam. Those materials provide useful cushioning during normal distribution, but they are not a long-term storage system when exposed to damp floors, leaking roofs, condensation, direct sun or concentrated weight.
Microsoft lists these package measurements and weights for 2022 specifications:

These are retail-package figures, not a universal promise for every bundle. Editions, included accessories and regional packaging can change the size or weight. Measure your actual closed package before buying an outer carton.
For context, Microsoft lists the Series X console itself at 15.1 cm × 15.1 cm × 30.1 cm and the Series S at 6.5 cm × 15.1 cm × 27.5 cm. Those console dimensions do not replace a measurement of the retail box: the package also contains molded protection, cables, a controller, manuals and other components.
Why an outer corrugated carton is the safest practical option
A retail box stored by itself is exposed to every shelf, floor and handling hazard in the room. A second, sturdy corrugated carton creates a replaceable protective layer. It helps absorb contact and keeps objects from rubbing directly against printed retail surfaces. This approach also follows Microsoft Support’s instruction to “Use a sturdy box to pack your accessory and any additional components.”

The outer carton is not a waterproof container. Its purpose is to prevent crushing, scuffing and accidental contact, while giving you a clean surface for labels and handling instructions. Keep it away from standing water and high condensation even after boxing the package.

Choose the second method when preserving the appearance and resale usefulness of the retail package matters. If you cannot obtain an outer carton immediately, use a dry, empty shelf temporarily and keep all objects away from the box; do not treat that as equivalent protection.
Step-by-step: pack the Xbox retail box for storage
1. Document the condition before closing it
Photograph every exterior panel, seal, label and corner in good light. Photograph the interior inserts and the way each cable, controller part and manual is positioned. These images establish the starting condition and make it easier to restore the original arrangement later.

Record any existing dent, crease, torn seal or scuff in your notes. Do not attempt to flatten a bowed panel with weight; pressure can create a permanent crease.

Return the molded foam or other fitted inserts to their original positions. Place the console, controller, cables, manuals and accessory pieces in the locations designed for them. Keeping the original fit prevents loose parts from moving inside the retail box during a later move.
Do not substitute dirty, oily or abrasive packing material inside the package. Dust and grit can rub against printed surfaces when the box is carried.
3. Close the retail box without forcing it
Fold the flaps along their existing creases. Stop if a flap resists, a panel bows or the contents prevent the lid from sitting naturally. Forcing the closure can crush corners or leave a pressure mark across a printed panel.
Do not apply packing tape directly to the retail box. Adhesive can lift ink, tear the paper face or leave residue when removed. If the original closure no longer holds, use the outer carton to provide containment rather than adding tape to printed surfaces.

4. Select the outer carton by measuring the actual package
Measure the closed retail package, then select a sturdy corrugated carton whose internal length, width and height all exceed those measurements. Leave room on every side for clean void fill. The exact extra amount depends on the cushioning material and the carton’s strength; the package must not be wedged tightly against the outer walls.

For a reference point, a Series X retail package is 38 cm × 29 cm × 22 cm, while a Series S package is 36 cm × 29 cm × 13 cm. Those figures are minimum package-space references, not recommended outer-carton dimensions. Your carton also needs clearance above the top, below the bottom and at each end.
Inspect the carton before use. Reject one with crushed corners, a split seam, oil marks, dampness or a musty smell. A previously wet carton can lose strength even after it appears dry.
5. Add clean, non-abrasive void fill
Center the retail box in the outer carton and fill the gaps with clean paper or another non-abrasive cushioning material. The goal is to stop the inner package from sliding when the carton is lifted or set down. Use enough material to hold the box in place without compressing its panels.
Keep cushioning away from any sharp object, loose fastener or dirty surface that could scratch or stain the retail package. Do not use the void fill to force a bulging lid closed. If the carton only closes under pressure, choose a larger carton.
6. Close and label the outer carton
Seal the outer carton using its own flaps and tape on the carton’s seams, never on the printed retail box. Write the contents and an orientation note on the outer carton. A simple “Xbox Series X” or “Xbox Series S” label, plus an arrow showing the preferred upright direction, reduces unnecessary opening and handling.
Do not write directly on the retail package when an outer carton is available. Labels, marker ink and adhesive are easier to replace on the carton than on the original box.

7. Place it above likely water and impact hazards
Put the carton on a stable shelf, pallet or other raised surface where a small leak or floor spill cannot reach it immediately. Keep it clear of plumbing, exterior doors, windows that condense, air-conditioner drip paths and storage areas where objects are regularly dragged past it.

Do not place heavy containers, tools or other cartons on top. Do not wedge the package beneath a shelf or between objects that press on its corners. A carton can look intact while its retail box has been slowly compressed inside.
Choosing the storage location
Temperature and humidity
Use a cool, dry indoor location with stable conditions rather than a garage, shed, attic or basement that experiences large swings. Microsoft’s published material cited here does not provide a numeric storage temperature or humidity limit for the retail packaging. “Cool and dry” is therefore a paper-and-corrugated-board preservation practice, not a Microsoft specification.
Keep the package away from condensation. A box moved from a cold area into warm, humid air can collect moisture on its surfaces; allow the carton and its contents to acclimate in a dry room before opening or repacking. Never store the box beside a known leak merely because it is inside a second carton.
Light and heat
Direct sunlight can fade printed colors and heat one side of the carton unevenly. Store the package in shade, away from windows and skylights. Keep it clear of radiators, heat registers, fireplaces, boilers and other heaters. Do not place it against a warm appliance that runs for long periods.

The box may be stored closed, but the console must not be operated while enclosed in packaging. Xbox guidance says to measure the space and “make sure you leave some extra space for airflow.” That advice applies when the console is installed and running, not when it is packed away. Before powering it on, remove the console and all packing materials and install it in an open space with the required ventilation.

How to stack and orient the carton
Keep the protected package on a flat, stable base. An upright orientation that avoids pressure on the retail box’s broad printed panels is generally easier to identify and retrieve, but the decisive rule is that no side or corner should carry the weight of other goods.
- Place heavier cartons below and the Xbox carton above them.
- Keep the top surface clear so the retail lid cannot be bowed.
- Leave enough room to lift the carton without dragging it across a shelf.
- Do not use the carton as a step, seat or temporary work surface.
- Keep sharp tools, liquids, food and dusty materials in separate storage.
If several Xbox packages are stored together, give each its own stable position rather than compressing them tightly into a stack. The Series X package weighs 1,237 g and the Series S package weighs 831 g according to Microsoft’s 2022 ecoprofiles; those figures describe the packages, not a safe load rating for stacking.
Inspection schedule and warning signs
Inspect the carton periodically, especially after a leak, flooding event, pest problem, move or major seasonal change. Open it carefully in a dry area when the outer carton shows a warning sign.
- Moisture: dampness, water marks, softened board, a musty odor or visible condensation.
- Compression: bowed panels, crushed corners, a lid that no longer closes naturally or a carton that has collapsed.
- Pests: droppings, gnaw marks, nesting material or holes in the board.
- Surface damage: scuffs, adhesive transfer, ink smears or grit inside the package.
- Movement: the retail box sliding because void fill has shifted or settled.
If the outer carton is damp or crushed, move the retail box to a dry, clean work surface without rubbing it against the damaged area. Photograph the condition, separate wet packing material and allow the box to dry in a shaded, ventilated room. Do not apply direct heat, iron the board or clamp it under weight while damp; those actions can warp or mark the printed surfaces.
What to do when the original box is already damaged
Minor scuffs or a small crease
Photograph the mark, remove loose dirt without scrubbing and place the box in a clean outer carton. Do not attempt cosmetic repairs with household tape, glue or solvent. A repair can be more visible than the original flaw and may tear the paper face later.
Crushed corner or bowed panel
Check that the inserts and contents are not exerting pressure. Refit the inserts only if they sit naturally; never force them into a distorted box. Use a larger outer carton with cushioning that supports the package without pressing on the damaged area.
Wet or mold-suspect packaging
Separate the box from dry items and do not seal moisture inside another carton. If there is visible mold, a persistent musty odor or extensive water damage, prioritize the safety of the storage area and its occupants rather than attempting to preserve the paperboard. The original appearance may not be recoverable.

- Move the outer carton to a clear, dry work surface.
- Read the orientation label and open the carton without a blade near the retail box.
- Remove void fill by hand and lift the retail package by its stronger sides, not by a loose flap or torn seal.
- Compare the contents with the photographs taken before storage.
- Remove all foam, paper and other packaging before connecting power.
- Install the console in an open location and provide the airflow required for operation.
Keep the photographs and the original inserts with the package if you may store it again. If any component is missing or a seal has changed, record that before discarding packing material.
