FFmpeg is not the playlist downloader: yt-dlp can call FFmpeg to merge or post-process media when needed. If yt-dlp runs in Docker, map the host volume into the container and save to the container-side path. Keep yt-dlp’s download archive on that same persistent volume so later runs can skip items already downloaded.
Before downloading: confirm permission and storage
Only download content you are authorized to download. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading or otherwise using content unless the Service expressly authorizes it or you have prior written permission from YouTube and, where applicable, the rights holders. The terms also restrict automated access, subject to their stated exceptions. A playlist being publicly accessible does not by itself establish permission.
There is no universal VPS volume path: it depends on your provider and server configuration. Find the actual mount point in your system or provider’s instructions, then check that it is mounted, has enough free space for the files you intend to save, and is writable by the account running yt-dlp. The Linux fstab manual explains persistent filesystem mounts; use your VPS provider’s documentation for volume attachment and provider-specific paths.
Download a playlist directly to the mounted volume
1. Check the mount and write access
Replace /srv/media below with the real mounted path on your VPS. Check that the directory exists and is mounted before starting a long job. Confirm the downloader’s user can write there; a small authorized download or a simple write check can expose permission problems early.

2. Install yt-dlp and make FFmpeg available if needed
Use yt-dlp for playlist extraction and downloading. Install FFmpeg and ensure it is discoverable in the same environment if yt-dlp needs it to merge formats or perform post-processing. Consult the projects’ current installation instructions because their documentation is maintained over time: yt-dlp installation and FFmpeg documentation.
3. Set a playlist-aware output path
Run this on the VPS, substituting your actual mount path and an authorized playlist URL:

yt-dlp -P "/srv/media" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"-P sets the base output directory. The output template creates a folder named for the playlist and names each file with its playlist index and title. yt-dlp’s documentation says missing directories in hierarchical output templates are created automatically. The exact resulting file extensions and media formats depend on the available formats and your yt-dlp configuration; the example does not promise a particular encoding or file size. 4. Keep an archive for incremental reruns
To have later runs skip successfully downloaded items, add a download archive stored on the mounted volume:

yt-dlp --download-archive "/srv/media/archive.txt" -P "/srv/media" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"Keep using the same archive file when rerunning the command. yt-dlp records downloaded items there and uses it to avoid downloading them again. Storing the archive elsewhere, such as a temporary container filesystem, can lose that record when the environment is replaced. See yt-dlp’s download archive documentation.
Run yt-dlp in Docker with a mounted VPS volume
A Docker container sees its own filesystem paths. Bind-mount the host volume into the container, then give yt-dlp the container-side destination—not the host path.

1. Map the host directory into the container
For example, map host path /srv/media to container path /downloads:
docker run --rm --mount type=bind,src=/srv/media,dst=/downloads IMAGEReplace IMAGE with the image you use to run yt-dlp. The host source path must exist for Docker’s default --mount behavior. Docker documents bind mounts as a way to make files created in the container persist on the host. Bind mounts are writable by default, but host ownership and permissions still apply. See Docker’s bind-mount documentation.

2. Save downloads and the archive under the container mount
Inside the container, target /downloads and keep the archive there too. The equivalent yt-dlp arguments are:
yt-dlp --download-archive "/downloads/archive.txt" -P "/downloads" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"Adapt the example to your image and container startup method so that yt-dlp actually runs with those arguments. If you instead target an unmapped container directory, files may be written to the container’s own storage rather than the VPS volume. Mounting over a non-empty container directory also obscures its existing contents for as long as the mount is in place; do not rely on files already stored in that target directory.

For either setup, confirm the volume’s capacity, persistence across server restarts or rebuilds, performance, pricing, and backup/restore options with the VPS provider. Those details are provider- and plan-specific; playlist size also depends on its contents and selected formats, so estimate from the media you are authorized to download rather than assuming a universal storage requirement.
Troubleshoot files missing from the expected directory
- Confirm the volume is mounted. If it is not mounted, the path may refer to an ordinary directory on the VPS instead of the attached volume. Check the server’s mount state and provider configuration.
- Check which path the process uses. A host process should target the host mount path. A process in Docker should target the mapped container destination.
- Verify the Docker source and destination. Confirm the bind mount uses the intended host source and that yt-dlp writes inside the destination. An incorrect mapping can leave files in container storage.
- Check write permissions. The account running yt-dlp—or the user inside the container—must be able to write to the mounted filesystem. Review host ownership, permissions, and any UID/GID mapping used by your setup.
- Check the archive location. Keep the same archive file on persistent storage. If it was kept only in a disposable container filesystem, it may no longer be available for the next run.
- Check space and the download output. The volume must have room for the requested files. Review yt-dlp’s output for download or post-processing errors; FFmpeg availability matters when a merge or post-processing step is required.
