Store a down jacket completely dry and uncompressed. Hang it with room around it, or put it loosely in a breathable cotton garment bag when hanging is impractical. Keep the jacket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and radiator heat. A stuff sack is for carrying the jacket, not for storing it between seasons.
Why storage affects down insulation
Down keeps you warm by trapping air in a three-dimensional network of fine feathers. A tightly packed jacket has less room for that structure to expand. Compression is useful while you are travelling because it reduces bulk, but leaving the garment compressed for long-term storage works against the loft you want when cold weather returns.

Care guides from Odlo, ARKET, Haglöfs, Jöttnar and Craft Sportswear all give the same practical direction: avoid extended compression and provide a loose, breathable storage arrangement. None of those guides establishes a universal number of hours or days after which compression causes a measurable loss of loft. Treat the advice as qualitative rather than as a timed threshold.

Jöttnar expresses the transport-versus-storage distinction even more directly: “The stuff sack is for carrying, not storing.”
Choose a storage method
| Method | Compression | Breathability | Space requirement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hanger in a closet | None when the jacket hangs freely | Open air | Needs vertical closet space and clearance around the garment | Default option for most homes |
| Loose cotton garment bag or cover | None if the bag is generously sized | Breathable fabric | Works on a hanger or shelf; does not require a tight container | Dust protection or closets where an uncovered jacket is inconvenient |
| Flat storage | None when the jacket is spread without weight on top | Open air or a breathable cover | Requires a clean, dry shelf or other flat area | When hanging is unavailable; specifically allowed by Odlo’s guidance |
| Stuff sack | Compressed | Limited by the packed shape | Minimal | Transport only, not off-season storage |
| Vacuum bag or other airtight compression bag | Strong compression | Not a breathable storage setup | Minimal | Do not use for long-term down-jacket storage |
Hanging in a closet
Use a normal hanger and leave space so the jacket is not wedged between other clothing. The goal is to let the garment retain its natural shape rather than forcing it into a narrow sleeve of fabric. Hanging is the simplest no-cost method and is the everyday approach described in ARKET’s down-care guidance.
Check the whole jacket after hanging it. Sleeves should not be jammed into a corner, and the body should not be pressed tightly against neighboring garments. If the rail is so crowded that the jacket is squeezed from both sides, hanging technically uses a hanger but still fails to provide the loose arrangement the care guidance calls for.
Using a breathable cotton bag
A loose cotton garment bag or cover is optional. It can keep dust off the jacket when closet conditions make open hanging inconvenient, but it must not function as a compression sack. ARKET’s August 2025 down-care guide recommends a breathable cotton bag or cover for long-term storage, and Haglöfs likewise describes a loose cotton storage bag as an alternative to hanging.
Choose a bag that allows the jacket to sit naturally. Do not force the garment into a smaller bag simply because it closes, and do not replace breathable fabric with an airtight plastic or vacuum container. A cover is useful only if it protects without squeezing.
Laying the jacket flat
If you lack suitable hanging space, lay the jacket flat in a clean, dry location where other items will not be piled on top. Odlo’s care guide specifically gives “hang or lay flat” as its storage direction. A flat arrangement is useful only when it remains loose; folding it into a tightly packed drawer recreates the compression problem.
A shelf works when it is clean, dry and large enough for the jacket to rest without being pushed against the sides. Do not treat a flat shelf as permission to stack luggage, blankets or other garments over the insulation. The point is to avoid sustained pressure from above as well as compression from a container.

Inspect it and clean only when needed
Check the jacket for dirt, spills or damage before storage. Do not assume that every down jacket must be washed at the end of a season. The manufacturer care label is the authority on whether the garment can be washed, which cycle is permitted and how it should be dried.

If cleaning is necessary, follow that label and the detergent manufacturer’s directions. A down-specific detergent is relevant only when you are actually washing a dirty jacket; it is not a storage requirement for a jacket that is already clean. Cleaning a clean garment simply because the season ended adds an unnecessary step and still requires complete drying.
Make dryness a hard requirement
Put the jacket away only when it is completely dry. Moisture left inside insulation creates a mildew risk, particularly when the garment then spends weeks in a closet or bag. This applies after washing, rain or any other exposure that may have left the filling damp.
If you are uncertain, continue drying or airing the jacket instead of storing it. Follow the care label for the permitted drying method. Do not use a storage bag as a substitute for finishing the drying process. A breathable cover can reduce dust, but it cannot make a damp garment safe to store.

- Check the care label. Identify the approved cleaning and drying instructions before doing anything to the garment.
- Inspect the shell and lining. Decide whether cleaning is necessary. If it is not dirty, skip washing rather than cleaning by default.
- Complete any required cleaning. Use only the label-approved process and products directed for that process.
- Finish drying before storage. A jacket that feels uncertainly damp should remain out for additional drying or airing.
- Select an uncompressed arrangement. Hang it with clearance, lay it flat without weight on top, or use a loose breathable cotton bag.
- Place it in the right environment. Choose a cool, dry area and position it away from direct sunlight and radiators.
- Keep the transport sack separate from the storage plan. If the jacket arrived in a stuff sack, remove it from that sack once the trip or activity is over.
Where to store a down jacket
Temperature and moisture matter as much as the container. ARKET, Haglöfs and Craft Sportswear describe a cool, dry environment for stored insulation. Jöttnar and ARKET also caution against direct sunlight; Jöttnar specifically adds radiators to the list of places to avoid.
A closet shelf or hanging rail can work if the area is dry and the jacket is not pressed against a heat source. Avoid locations where dampness is likely, and do not put the garment directly beside a radiator for convenience. The storage method cannot compensate for a wet or overheated environment.
Think about the location as a combination of container and surroundings. An open hanger in a damp area is not a better choice than a loose breathable cover in a dry closet. Conversely, a cotton bag does not make a humid cupboard suitable. Choose the driest practical place first, then select hanging, flat storage or a cover that leaves the jacket loose.
What to do after travel or a wet outing
Temporary packing and seasonal storage are different jobs. A stuff sack may be appropriate in a backpack or suitcase, but unpack the jacket after the journey or activity so it can regain its space. If rain or condensation affected it, deal with drying before deciding where it will stay between uses.
The care guides warn against prolonged compression but do not define an exact safe duration. That means you should not rely on an invented “maximum number of hours” or assume that a particular overnight limit is universally safe. The practical rule is to remove compression when transport ends, especially when the jacket will not be worn again soon.

At the end of a trip, open the pack, take the jacket out of its sack and inspect it before returning it to a closet. If it is dry and clean, move it directly to its loose storage arrangement. If it is wet or dirty, follow the label first; storage should come only after those conditions have been addressed.
Troubleshoot common storage mistakes
The jacket was left in its stuff sack
Take it out and move it to a hanger, a loose cotton bag or a flat, unweighted location. Do not try to solve the problem by squeezing it into an even smaller container. Give the garment room to recover naturally before its next use. Since no care guide gives a universal compression time limit, simply correct the arrangement rather than trying to calculate whether damage has already occurred.
The jacket may have been stored damp
Remove it from the closet or bag and continue drying or airing it according to the care label. Moisture is the issue to correct; changing containers while leaving the jacket damp does not address the mildew risk. Once it is fully dry, choose a cool, dry storage location.
The only available closet is crowded
Use a loose breathable cotton cover or bag and place it where the jacket is not compressed by surrounding clothes. If no hanging position allows clearance, a clean flat shelf is preferable to forcing the garment into a packed drawer. The bag is an alternative to hanging, not a reason to accept a smaller, tighter space.
You are considering a vacuum bag
Do not use one for long-term down-jacket storage. Vacuum storage deliberately removes space and creates the type of extended compression the care guidance advises against. Choose breathable fabric or open hanging instead. The space saved by a vacuum bag solves a closet problem while creating the wrong conditions for loft preservation.
The jacket needs cleaning before storage
Follow the garment’s own label rather than a generic washing recipe. Clean it only when needed, then complete the label-approved drying process before using any storage method. Neither a special detergent nor a storage bag replaces the label’s instructions.
How to decide between a hanger and a bag
- Choose a hanger when you have a dry closet with enough clearance and want the simplest free solution.
- Choose a loose cotton bag or cover when dust protection matters or an uncovered jacket would be in the way, provided the bag does not compress it.
- Choose flat storage when hanging is not practical and you have a clean, dry shelf where the jacket can remain unweighted.
- Choose none of the compressed options for seasonal storage. Stuff sacks and vacuum bags solve a travel-space problem, not a loft-preservation problem.
There is no insulation advantage established for one loose method over another. The important differences are practical: a hanger needs vertical clearance, a flat shelf needs horizontal space, and a cotton cover adds dust protection while retaining breathability. Whichever option fits your home, keep the jacket dry and free from sustained pressure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCost and equipment trade-offs
Correct storage does not require a specialized purchase. An existing hanger is the no-cost option when your closet is cool, dry and roomy enough. A loose breathable cotton garment bag is an optional expense for dust protection or awkward closet layouts; it is not a requirement for preserving insulation. Buying a compression sack or vacuum bag for seasonal storage is a poor trade-off because those products provide the opposite of the recommended condition. Reserve compression equipment for transport, where reducing bulk is the purpose.

Optional storage equipment
You do not need a specialty product to store a down jacket correctly. An existing hanger is sufficient when the closet is suitable. If you want a cover, a breathable cotton garment bag is the relevant optional purchase: ARKET and Haglöfs both describe loose cotton storage as an alternative to hanging.
Keep the bag subordinate to the storage requirements. It should provide dust protection without squeezing the jacket, and it should be used only after the jacket is dry. A compression sack, vacuum bag or airtight container is not an equivalent substitute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the care guidance does—and does not—show
Manufacturer care guides agree on the direction of care: store down loose, keep it dry, provide breathable protection if needed and use cool, dry surroundings. They do not provide a named statistic showing a precise percentage of insulation loss from a particular bag, nor a laboratory result defining how many hours or days of compression are harmless.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave my down jacket in its stuff sack overnight?
The care guides do not establish a universal safe number of hours. A stuff sack is intended for carrying, not long-term storage, so unpack the jacket when transport ends and move it to a loose arrangement.
Do I have to wash a down jacket before storing it for summer?
No. Inspect it and clean it only if needed. If washing is necessary, follow the jacket’s care label and complete the approved drying process before storage.
Is a plastic garment bag suitable for seasonal storage?
The recommended cover is loose and breathable, such as cotton. An airtight plastic or vacuum bag is not an equivalent substitute because it limits breathability and compresses the insulation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I hang a down jacket or lay it flat?
Either can work when the jacket remains uncompressed. Hang it with clearance, or lay it flat on a clean, dry shelf without items pressing on top. Choose the option that gives it more room in your home.

Can I store a down jacket near a radiator?
No. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from radiator heat. Jöttnar specifically cautions against radiators, and ARKET and Jöttnar advise avoiding direct sunlight as well.
What if my closet is too crowded for a hanger?
Use a generously sized, breathable cotton cover or bag, or choose a clean flat shelf. Do not force the jacket into a tightly packed drawer or smaller container.
How dry does the jacket need to be?
It should be completely dry. If you are unsure, continue drying or airing it according to the care label. Storing a damp jacket can create a mildew risk.
Do I need to buy a special storage bag?
No. A suitable existing hanger is enough when the closet is dry and has clearance. A loose breathable cotton bag is an optional dust cover, not a requirement.
What should I do if the jacket got wet on its last outing?
Take it out of its travel sack and follow the care label’s drying directions. Do not put it into a closet or storage bag until it is fully dry.
Is there a proven compression time limit?
The cited manufacturer guides do not provide a universal number of hours or days or a quantified loft-loss threshold. The reliable rule is to use compression for transport and avoid prolonged compression in storage.
The Bottom Line
Before seasonal storage, inspect the jacket, clean it only when the care label and condition call for cleaning, and dry it completely. Then hang it with clearance, lay it flat without weight on top, or use a loose breathable cotton cover. Keep it cool, dry and away from sunlight and radiators. Remove it from a stuff sack after travel, and never substitute a vacuum or airtight compression bag for proper storage.
