If YouTube keeps pausing, first check whether the player is actually pausing or the video is buffering. A spinning loader, sudden drop in quality, or repeated refill points to buffering; a pause immediately after you press Play is more likely to involve the player, browser, app, account, or device. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and replay the video: this quick test helps show whether the problem follows your connection or stays with one playback setup.
Why does YouTube keep pausing?
Two different problems can look like a pause. Buffering means the player is waiting for more video data; repeated loading, a spinning indicator, or a quality drop are common clues. A video that stops without loading—especially just after you press Play—may instead point to a playback interaction involving the app, browser, an extension, your account, or the device.
Start by noting the scope: does it happen on one video or every video, on one device or several, and in one browser or also in the official YouTube app? Those comparisons help narrow down the cause before you change settings.
How to stop YouTube from buffering: try these fixes in order
1. Switch networks and replay
Change connection type, then try the same video again. If you are on Wi-Fi, test mobile data; if you are on mobile data, test Wi-Fi. YouTube recommends this connection check in its computer streaming and video troubleshooting. Mobile data may incur charges, so check your plan before streaming.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If playback works on one connection but not the other, the behavior points toward the connection that failed. It does not by itself identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi interference, congestion, the router, or another network issue.
2. Lower video quality and reduce competing traffic
While the video is playing, open Settings > Quality and choose a lower option if one is available. Lower quality reduces the stream’s demand on a connection that cannot keep up with the current setting. Also stop other downloads or streams and, if possible, reduce the number of devices using the connection. YouTube includes these steps in its streaming troubleshooting guidance and video error guidance.
3. Check Wi-Fi distance and interference
Move closer to the router and replay the video. Walls, metal, and other physical obstructions can interfere with Wi-Fi; avoid placing the router or playback device behind them where possible. Moving closer is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee that the router or connection is the cause. YouTube also recommends checking proximity and Wi-Fi conditions in its connection troubleshooting steps.

If changing from Wi-Fi to mobile data improves playback, you can also test a wired connection where the device supports it. A wired test can help distinguish Wi-Fi instability from other connection problems, but it cannot guarantee a YouTube fix.
4. Refresh the app, browser, and device
Update your operating system and YouTube app or browser. Then close and reopen the app or browser, close excess browser tabs, and restart the device. These steps can clear temporary playback or software state. YouTube lists them in its video error troubleshooting guidance and computer streaming troubleshooting.
5. Clear cached data
On a mobile device, clear the YouTube app cache using the device’s app settings. In a browser, clear the cache and cookies, then sign in again if needed. Because clearing cookies can remove saved site state, be prepared to sign back in. YouTube recommends these steps in its streaming troubleshooting guidance and video error guidance.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
6. Test browser extensions and DNS changes
If YouTube pauses in a browser, temporarily disable ad blockers and other extensions, then replay the video. If playback changes, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one is involved. YouTube also advises checking that third-party software has not changed DNS settings in its video error troubleshooting guidance.
Why does YouTube work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi?
When the same video plays on mobile data but repeatedly buffers on Wi-Fi, focus your next tests on the home connection: try moving closer to the router, lowering quality, and stopping other network activity. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi, too. If several devices have trouble on that network, the pattern points away from a single app or browser and toward the shared connection; if only one device or browser has trouble, investigate its software and extensions.

How to tell whether the problem is your browser, app, device, or account
Compare playback contexts rather than changing several things at once. Try the official YouTube app or youtube.com, then test another supported device. Sign in when appropriate so you can compare the same account context. YouTube recommends checking playback across contexts and using Help & Feedback to send feedback if the issue continues; see its computer streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Only one browser fails: test with extensions disabled, then refresh the browser state.
- Only one device fails: update and restart that device, then compare its app with its browser if available.
- Several devices fail on the same Wi-Fi: concentrate on the shared network and its Wi-Fi conditions.
- The same issue follows your account across devices or networks: compare signed-in and, where appropriate, signed-out playback; send feedback if the fault persists.
If you can reproduce the problem, send feedback immediately after it happens: open YouTube’s Help & Feedback option and describe the video, device, connection, and what you observed. That context is more useful than reporting only that playback paused.
Why does a YouTube live stream keep pausing?
Live playback has an extra trade-off: broadcast delay. YouTube says, “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live programming issues, which can delay the stream.” Its guidance also explains that lower broadcast delay leaves less buffer and is more likely to interrupt playback. If smooth viewing matters more than minimizing spoilers, choose Default rather than a lower-delay option when the stream offers that setting. See YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting guidance.

When should you consider a network hardware change?
Do not start by replacing the router: first compare networks, devices, Wi-Fi distance, quality settings, and competing traffic. If multiple devices show the same playback problem on the home network after those checks, further investigating the router or home Wi-Fi may make sense. A wired connection test can help determine whether Wi-Fi is part of the issue, but neither a cable nor new hardware guarantees better YouTube playback.
YouTube’s support instructions describe troubleshooting steps, not a universal minimum speed or a performance benchmark. The right fix depends on whether the pause follows the connection, a particular playback environment, or a live stream’s delay setting.
