The most direct creator-side way to stop monetized ads on a YouTube live stream is to turn off monetization for that stream. If you keep monetization on, you can prevent mid-roll ads by choosing manual mid-rolls and inserting no breaks—but YouTube automatically enables pre-roll and display ads when live monetization is on. Neither setting guarantees that every viewer will have an entirely ad-free experience.
Choose between turning monetization off and controlling mid-rolls
In YouTube Studio, check the active stream’s monetization settings in Live Control Room; channel defaults for future streams may not match the settings you want for this broadcast.

- Turn monetization off: This is the most direct documented creator-side option for stopping monetized ads from being triggered on the live stream. The trade-off is that you give up ad monetization for that stream.
- Keep monetization on, but use manual mid-rolls: Choose manual mid-roll handling and do not insert any breaks. YouTube Help says, “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.” Pre-roll and display ads remain automatically enabled when live monetization is on.
Disabling mid-rolls is not the same as disabling all ad formats. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on for a live stream when monetization is turned on.
How YouTube’s mid-roll controls differ

YouTube’s automatic mid-roll optimizations include limiting ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pausing mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snoozing mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. These are measures for automatic mid-rolls, not a promise that ads will never interrupt anyone.

Use “Delay ads” only as a temporary measure
Live Control Room has a “Delay ads” control that delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is active, so this control is not a substitute for choosing manual mode and leaving breaks uninserted when your goal is to avoid mid-rolls.
Understand what viewers may see
YouTube says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” If no ad runs, viewers continue watching the stream; viewers who receive a mid-roll rejoin after the ad ends or they skip it. Ad delivery varies, so one viewer’s experience may differ from another’s. A creator-side setting should not be presented as a guarantee that every viewer will avoid every ad format.

YouTube reports an over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. YouTube’s January 2024 figure is an average across 207 countries, not a prediction for an individual music stream or evidence that automatic mid-rolls cause fewer interruptions.
