Why your phone keeps joining the provider hotspot
Phones normally reconnect to a Wi‑Fi network after you join it once. The network name, security details and, where applicable, the password are stored as a known network. Whenever Wi‑Fi is switched on and that saved network is within range, the phone can connect automatically.

That behavior is usually convenient for a home router, but it can be unwanted for a provider-operated hotspot. The phone might switch away from cellular data while you are walking, riding in a car or sitting near a neighboring building that broadcasts the provider’s signal. The important point is that the phone is not choosing “the provider” as one universal setting. It is matching a saved network name, or SSID, and applying the automatic-connection rule attached to that particular record.

Internet providers often operate more than one public hotspot network. A provider may use separate names for secure customer hotspots, open public hotspots and mobile or account-specific access. Turning off automatic joining for one saved name does not change the setting for a different name.

A second possibility is provider management. Some provider apps install a Wi‑Fi profile or secure auto-connect feature. That profile can reconnect the phone even when the ordinary saved-network control is not the setting responsible for the connection. In that case, you must inspect the provider app or the installed profile as well as the phone’s Wi‑Fi menu.
First identify the exact network being joined
Before changing anything, note the precise network name (SSID) shown in the Wi‑Fi list or connection notification. Do not rely on the provider’s brand name alone. The same provider may broadcast several SSIDs, and a phone can have more than one of them saved.
If the connection disappears before you can read it, check the phone’s Wi‑Fi details or saved-network list soon afterward. Record capitalization, spaces and punctuation. A secure and public version can look almost identical while remaining separate entries, so changing the wrong one can make it seem as if the setting did not work.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Network name exactly as displayed | The Auto-Join or Auto-connect setting applies to an individual saved network. |
| Secure versus public variant | A secure hotspot and an open public hotspot may use different SSIDs and separate saved settings. |
| Other provider names in Saved networks | Disabling one SSID does not disable another one. |
| Provider app or Wi‑Fi profile | A managed connection may be controlled outside the normal saved-network screen. |
For example, Xfinity documents separate networks named XFINITY and xfinitywifi, and its support material also distinguishes Xfinity Mobile. If your phone shows more than one of these, change the setting for every network you do not want it to join automatically. Use the names you actually see on your device rather than assuming that one setting covers all of them.
This identification step also tells you which instructions to use. Apple devices call the control Auto-Join. Android generally calls it Auto-connect, although a manufacturer may use different wording or omit a dedicated switch. The phone maker, operating-system version and exact SSID all matter.
Stop automatic joining on an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Wi‑Fi controls let you disable automatic joining while keeping the network’s saved credentials, or forget the network entirely.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi‑Fi.
- Locate the provider hotspot under the current or known networks list.
- Tap the information button next to that network.
- Switch Auto-Join off.
With Auto-Join off, the iPhone or iPad retains the network record but will not join it automatically. If you later decide to connect, select the network manually and complete any required authentication.

If the provider has more than one saved SSID, repeat these steps for each one. Turning off Auto-Join for XFINITY, for example, does not by itself change the Auto-Join setting for xfinitywifi. Check the exact names displayed in your Wi‑Fi list instead of assuming that the first change covers every provider hotspot.
When to use “Forget This Network” instead
On the network details screen, tap Forget This Network when you want to remove the saved network and its stored password. This is the stronger reset: the device no longer has the credentials available for an automatic or one-tap reconnection.

Forgetting has a practical consequence. If you choose that hotspot again later, you may need to enter the password or sign in again. Use Auto-Join off when you want to preserve the saved details for occasional manual use; use Forget This Network when you do not want the phone to retain them.
Forgetting only removes the network record from that Apple device. It does not disable the provider’s hotspot service, remove the provider account, or affect another iPhone, iPad or computer using the same account. If the network is added again later, its automatic-join preference will need to be reviewed again.
Stop automatic joining on Android
Android uses the same basic model, but the wording and menu path differ by manufacturer and software version. Look for the saved provider network in the phone’s Wi‑Fi or Internet settings, open its details, and turn off the per-network control labeled Auto-connect or a similar term. If that control is unavailable, use Forget.
- Open Settings.
- Open Wi‑Fi, Internet or Connections, depending on the phone.
- Open the list of saved networks, or tap the provider hotspot currently shown as available or connected.
- Tap the network’s gear, information button or details panel.
- Turn off Auto-connect (the exact label can vary).
- If no per-network switch is offered, tap Forget and confirm.
Google’s Android guidance describes the underlying behavior: when Wi‑Fi is on and a saved network is nearby, Android can connect to it automatically. Forgetting the saved network removes that remembered connection.
Some Android builds place saved networks behind a menu such as Saved networks, Manage networks or Advanced Wi‑Fi. If you cannot see the provider SSID in the immediate Wi‑Fi list, open one of those menus or use the Settings search box for “saved networks.” The control still needs to be changed on the individual provider network, not on a different global Wi‑Fi page.
Samsung phones
On many Samsung devices, open Settings > Connections > Wi‑Fi, tap the gear beside the provider network, then look for the automatic-connection control. Samsung’s labels can change between One UI versions, so use the network’s detail screen rather than a global Wi‑Fi switch. If the switch is not present, choose Forget.
If the phone shows several provider entries, open each entry separately. A Samsung phone can retain a secure and a public SSID at the same time, and the setting on one does not alter the other.
Google Pixel phones
On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, select the provider network or open its saved-network details, and disable the automatic connection option if shown. To remove the credentials, use Forget.
Pixel menu wording can differ between Android releases. If the network is not visible in the first panel, open the saved-network list from the Internet settings and select the exact SSID that appeared during the unwanted connection.

Motorola phones
On many Motorola models, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, tap the provider network’s settings icon, and turn off the automatic-connection option. If the model does not expose that control, select Forget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter forgetting, Motorola may show the provider again as an available network. That is expected: the hotspot can still be in range. It should not reconnect automatically unless you select it and save it again, or a separate provider profile manages the connection.
LG phones and other Android models
Menus vary on other Android phones. Xfinity’s documented auto-connect control is not supported on LG phones, so an LG handset may require forgetting the saved network or following the phone’s own network-management instructions. The same fallback applies to any model that does not show an Auto-connect switch: remove the saved network with Forget.
Do not substitute a global setting such as turning Wi‑Fi off permanently. That would affect every wireless network and is not necessary for stopping one provider hotspot. Open the provider network’s own details first; if the per-network option does not exist, use Forget.
Auto-Join off versus Forget: choose the right fix
| Choice | What changes | What happens later | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto-Join off (iPhone/iPad) | The network remains known, but the device stops joining it automatically. | You can select it manually; saved details remain available. | You want occasional manual access without automatic connections. |
| Auto-connect off (Android, when offered) | The per-network automatic connection is disabled. | You can generally select the saved network manually. | Your phone exposes a dedicated per-network switch. |
| Forget This Network or Forget | The saved network and stored credentials are removed. | You must authenticate again if you reconnect later. | You do not want the phone to retain the hotspot or the automatic setting is unavailable. |
These are per-network controls. If the provider uses several SSIDs, repeat the appropriate action for each saved name that you do not want to join.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The choice is mainly about convenience versus removal. Auto-Join or Auto-connect off leaves a record for later manual use, while Forget removes the record and means another sign-in may be required. Neither action is a paid service, and no extra hardware is needed. The built-in phone settings, together with the provider’s existing app when a managed profile is involved, are the relevant controls.
If the phone still reconnects after you change the setting
Persistent reconnection usually means either a different SSID is being selected or a provider-managed profile is controlling the connection. Work through the checks below in order.
1. Check every saved provider SSID
Open the saved or known networks list and look for all names associated with the provider. Compare each name with the one shown when the unwanted connection occurs. Disable Auto-Join or Auto-connect, or forget, the exact matching network. For Xfinity customers, that may mean checking both XFINITY and xfinitywifi, plus any separately saved mobile network.
If the phone changes from one SSID to another while you move around, repeat the process for each one. A successful change should be judged by the exact name shown after the next connection attempt, not merely by whether the provider’s brand appears in the notification.

2. Look for a provider-installed app or profile
Some provider applications can install a secure Wi‑Fi profile that enables automatic connection to secure hotspots. Xfinity describes this kind of secure profile and provides separate troubleshooting for its Secure Auto-Connect feature.
If your phone reconnects even after the saved network is forgotten, open the provider’s installed app and review its Wi‑Fi, hotspot, secure connection or auto-connect settings. Also inspect the phone’s installed profiles or device-management area for a provider Wi‑Fi profile. The exact removal path depends on the provider, phone model and operating-system version; there is no single profile-removal sequence that works on every combination.
If a profile is marked as managed, cannot be deleted, or immediately returns after removal, use the provider’s instructions for that profile. Do not assume that deleting an ordinary saved network will remove a managed configuration. A profile can re-create or control secure hotspot access outside the normal saved-network list.
3. Check the account and device combination
Secure hotspot access can depend on the customer’s account and the device being used. Xfinity’s setup guidance distinguishes Android 11 and later from older Android versions and notes that secure hotspot access depends on the customer/device combination. If the provider app shows no matching control, confirm that the phone is signed in to the intended provider account and that the app supports the phone’s Android or iOS version.
This matters when instructions appear to conflict. A path documented for Android 11 or later may not appear on an older Android release, and a feature available to one customer/device combination may not be available to another. Use the instructions that match both the phone’s version and the provider account rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Wi‑Fi settings.
4. Repeat the test with Wi‑Fi enabled
After changing the setting, turn Wi‑Fi off and on, move back within range of the hotspot, and watch the network name shown in the status or Wi‑Fi panel. The phone should remain disconnected until you select the network manually, unless another saved SSID or a managed profile is responsible. If it reconnects, record the exact name and return to the corresponding saved-network or provider-profile control.
Testing this way separates a real automatic reconnection from a manual tap or a different nearby network. Keep Wi‑Fi enabled during the test, because the automatic behavior only matters when the phone’s Wi‑Fi radio is on and the saved network is nearby.

What this setting does—and does not do
- It controls a saved network, not every hotspot everywhere. A change for one SSID does not automatically apply to differently named provider networks.
- It does not turn off Wi‑Fi. Your phone can still connect automatically to other saved networks whose own automatic-connection settings remain enabled.
- Forgetting is more extensive than disabling auto-join. It removes saved credentials, so a later connection may require authentication again.
- A managed profile can sit outside the ordinary network list. If a provider app installed the profile, the app or device-management settings may be the place where automatic connection is controlled.
- Menu names are not universal. Android instructions vary by manufacturer and OS version, while iPhone and iPad use Apple’s Auto-Join wording.
- The change is local to the device. It does not alter the provider’s hotspot broadcast or change automatic-connection settings on other devices.
How to prevent the problem from returning
- When you first connect to a provider hotspot, note the complete SSID shown on the phone.
- Immediately open that network’s details and disable Auto-Join or Auto-connect if you do not want future automatic connections.
- If you do not expect to use the hotspot again, choose Forget instead of leaving credentials saved.
- Review the saved-network list for other provider SSIDs, including secure and public variants.
- If the provider app offers secure auto-connect, decide whether that feature is enabled and review its profile controls.
- After making changes, test near the hotspot with Wi‑Fi on and verify the exact network name before assuming the setting failed.
Keeping a short note of the SSIDs you changed can help if the provider later adds another network name or if a phone update reorganizes the menus. The useful record is the exact network name and whether you chose the automatic switch or Forget; the provider brand by itself is not specific enough.
Key takeaways
The direct fix is per network: disable Auto-Join on an iPhone or iPad, or Auto-connect on an Android phone when that control is available. Choose Forget when you want the saved password and network record removed. If the phone continues to connect, check for another SSID and then investigate a provider app or installed Wi‑Fi profile. The correct setting depends on the phone’s operating system, manufacturer, exact network name and whether the provider manages secure hotspot access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Auto-Join or Auto-connect disable Wi‑Fi completely?
No. It changes the automatic-connection rule for the selected saved network only. The phone can still use Wi‑Fi and can still connect to other saved networks whose own automatic settings remain enabled.
Should I disable automatic joining or forget the hotspot?
Disable Auto-Join or Auto-connect if you want to keep the saved details for occasional manual use. Choose Forget This Network or Forget if you want the network and stored credentials removed; reconnecting later may require authentication again.
Why does the provider hotspot keep returning after I tap Forget?
Check whether the phone is joining a differently named SSID, such as a secure or public variant. If the exact network returns after being forgotten, a provider app or installed Wi‑Fi profile may be managing secure hotspot access. Review those controls and follow the provider’s profile instructions.
Do I need to change both XFINITY and xfinitywifi?
If both names appear in your saved networks or connection notifications, yes. They are separate SSIDs with separate automatic-connection settings. Xfinity also distinguishes Xfinity Mobile, so change every provider network you do not want joined automatically.
Why can’t I find Auto-connect on my Android phone?
Android menus vary by manufacturer and software version, and some models do not expose a per-network switch. Open the exact network’s details first; if no automatic option is available, use Forget. Xfinity specifically says its described auto-connect control is not supported on LG phones.
Could a provider app be responsible even after I change Wi‑Fi settings?
Yes. Some provider apps install a secure Wi‑Fi profile or Secure Auto-Connect feature. Check the app’s Wi‑Fi or hotspot settings and the phone’s installed-profile or device-management area. Removal and management steps depend on the provider, phone and operating-system version.
Does the fix work the same way on every phone?
The principle is the same, but labels and paths differ. iPhone and iPad use Auto-Join; Android generally uses Auto-connect or a similar label. Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, LG and other models can place the control in different menus, and Android 11 or later may have different provider setup instructions than older releases.
Is special hardware or a paid app required?
No. The normal fix uses the phone’s built-in Wi‑Fi settings. If a provider-managed profile is involved, use the provider app or its profile instructions; no additional physical product is required.
The Bottom Line
Open the exact provider SSID’s details, turn off Auto-Join or Auto-connect, and use Forget when you want its credentials removed. If it still reconnects, check every provider SSID and then inspect the provider app or installed Wi‑Fi profile.
