Those controls are different from muting a microphone or disabling a wake word: an assistant may still process a request you deliberately speak after you turn off history saving.
Use the section for your platform below. Apple’s control is an optional sharing setting, Google’s is in Web & App Activity, and Alexa combines retention, review and deletion tools in Alexa Privacy. Names and locations can move as operating systems and account pages change, so compare the labels on your device with the paths shown here.

Three controls you need to distinguish
Voice assistants can handle several kinds of data, and one switch rarely controls all of them.
| Control | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Stop future account-level audio retention | Prevents new voice samples from being saved to the provider account for history, review or service-improvement purposes. | It does not necessarily erase older recordings, stop the assistant processing a request, or remove copies held elsewhere. |
| Delete existing history | Removes recordings and related activity that the provider has already associated with your account, subject to the provider’s deletion process. | It does not automatically change the setting that governs future collection. |
| Prevent voice activation | Muting a hardware microphone or disabling a wake phrase stops the device from listening for that activation method. | It is not the same as deleting cloud history and can make hands-free features unavailable. |
Some services also retain text transcripts, typed requests, Voice Match or personalization data separately from the audio. A complete privacy cleanup therefore means checking the audio setting, the activity history and the device’s activation controls.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Stop Siri and Dictation recordings from being shared by Apple
Turn off the optional improvement setting on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Open Analytics & Improvements.
- Turn off Improve Siri & Dictation. On some current Apple software, the label appears as Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence.
Apple describes this as an optional contribution of audio samples and transcripts for developing its services. Turning it off stops that improvement-sharing choice; it is not a universal no-processing command. Siri and Dictation still have to process a request to provide an answer or convert speech to text.
HomePod follows the iPhone or iPad used during setup
Apple says the HomePod setting follows the iPhone or iPad used to configure it. If several people use the speaker, check the Apple device whose account and setup process are actually connected to the HomePod rather than assuming a change on any nearby iPhone will apply.
Delete Siri and Dictation history separately
Apple’s detailed deletion instructions are documented for Mac, not as an iPhone path:
- On a Mac, open System Settings.
- Choose Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri, depending on the software version).
- Select Delete Siri & Dictation History.
- Allow the Mac to connect to the internet so the deletion request can be completed.
Apple says this removes request history—audio and transcripts—associated with a random identifier and less than six months old. It does not change the sharing choice. In Apple’s wording, deleting Siri and Dictation history does not change the choice you made about sharing audio recordings, so check the Analytics & Improvements switch after deleting.
What this Apple setting cannot promise
- It does not disable the microphone or stop a deliberately spoken Siri request from being processed.
- It does not establish that every copy of data outside the described history is gone.
- The exact label may differ between Siri-only and Apple Intelligence-enabled environments.
Stop Google Assistant from saving audio to your Google Account
Turn off Include voice and audio activity
- Sign in to the Google Account used by Assistant.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Under activity controls, open Web & App Activity.
- Clear the checkbox or switch labeled Include voice and audio activity.
Google says that, when this control is off, it will no longer save Assistant audio recordings in your Google Account on Google servers with Web & App Activity when you interact with Google Assistant. The setting applies wherever that account is signed in, including the Assistant app and a Google or Nest speaker.

This is an account-level saving control, not a microphone shutdown. Google explicitly says Assistant continues to process audio to answer when you speak to it.
Remove recordings that were saved before you changed the setting
- Return to Google Account > Data & privacy > Web & App Activity.
- Choose Manage activity to open the activity list in My Activity.
- Delete individual Assistant interactions, or choose an automatic activity-retention option.
Turning off Include voice and audio activity does not delete older recordings. If you use an automatic retention period, note that the option applies to all Web & App Activity, not only voice audio. Review the scope before confirming so that you do not remove unrelated searches, app activity or other account history unintentionally.

Mute a Google or Nest speaker when you do not want voice activation
For a physical speaker, use its microphone-mute control when you want to prevent it from listening for the wake phrase. Google also documents turning off Hey Google. These choices reduce or remove hands-free activation, so the speaker may not respond until the microphone is unmuted or the wake phrase is restored.
Account deletion is not necessarily device-data deletion
Google notes that other copies can exist, including on-device data used for Voice Match or personalization. A cloud-history cleanup therefore should not be described as proof that every local or feature-supporting datum has disappeared. False activations are possible; review My Activity and delete a mistaken interaction when one appears.
Stop Alexa from saving recordings on Echo devices
Open Alexa Privacy and choose a retention policy
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Select the voice-recording retention option you want: automatic deletion after 3 months, automatic deletion after 18 months, or the option not to save voice recordings.
On an Echo Show, the same Alexa Privacy controls are available on the device. Check the setting on the Amazon account that the Echo is registered to, especially in a household with multiple accounts or profiles.

Review and delete past requests
- In Alexa Privacy, open Review Alexa History.
- Filter or browse the interactions you want to inspect.
- Play the available recording when you need to verify what was captured.
- Delete the selected recording, transcript or typed request.
Alexa’s controls cover recordings, transcripts and typed requests, but those data types do not always have identical retention behavior.
What the do-not-save option does
Amazon states that choosing not to save voice recordings automatically deletes recordings after requests are processed and automatically deletes existing voice recordings associated with the account. This is the closest Alexa option to preventing account-level audio history without manually removing every old recording.
Text transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat when you choose not to save recordings, then are automatically deleted. They can also be removed from Alexa Privacy. This means the audio can be gone while text associated with the same conversation remains temporarily.
Feature and deletion limits to understand
- Amazon warns that deleting interactions can reduce personalization and some features.
- Voice ID will not work if you choose not to save recordings.
- Cloud deletion can take time, and records needed to support ongoing functions may remain for a period.
- Data held by a third-party Alexa skill developer or outside Amazon’s cloud is not necessarily removed by Alexa’s account control. Review that skill’s own privacy terms if you used it for sensitive requests.
Which action should you take?
| Platform | Prevent future account audio saving | Remove existing audio | Stop wake-word activation | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad and HomePod | Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements; turn off Improve Siri & Dictation or Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence. | Apple’s documented path is on Mac: System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri) > Delete Siri & Dictation History. | Not controlled by the improvement-sharing switch; manage Siri, Dictation or the device microphone separately when needed. | Siri requests still need processing, and deleting history does not alter the sharing choice. |
| Google Assistant and Google/Nest speakers | Google Account > Data & privacy > Web & App Activity; turn off Include voice and audio activity. | Web & App Activity > Manage activity in My Activity; delete items or set retention. | Mute the Nest microphone or turn off Hey Google. | Automatic retention settings can affect all Web & App Activity, and some device or personalization data may remain. |
| Alexa and Echo | Alexa app > More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data; choose 3 months, 18 months or do not save. | Alexa Privacy > Review Alexa History; delete recordings, transcripts or typed requests. | Use the Echo’s microphone mute control. | Not saving removes associated recordings but disables Voice ID and can reduce personalization; transcripts and typed requests have a separate 30-day rule. |
A practical privacy cleanup sequence
If you use more than one assistant, complete the following sequence for every account and device rather than relying on one company’s setting.
- Inventory the assistants. List Siri on each Apple device, Google Assistant accounts on phones and speakers, and every Alexa account or household profile.
- Change future-retention settings. Use the platform-specific paths above. Record the date and the account changed so a later software update does not leave one device overlooked.
- Delete existing cloud history. Use Apple’s documented Mac deletion control, Google My Activity, and Alexa Review Alexa History.
- Check text separately. Look for transcripts and typed requests. Alexa explicitly keeps those for up to 30 days after the last interaction in a chat when audio saving is disabled.
- Decide whether to disable activation. Mute a speaker microphone or turn off its wake phrase during meetings, medical discussions or other situations where you do not want accidental activation.
- Review connected features. Voice Match, Voice ID, personalization and third-party skills may depend on data that is separate from the recording toggle.
- Verify on the next interaction. After the setting change, inspect the relevant history page after a test command. The test confirms which account and device are actually being used; it is not a guarantee that all processing has stopped.
Troubleshooting when recordings still appear
The setting is missing or has a different name
Apple’s label can change between Improve Siri & Dictation and Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence. Google places its control inside Web & App Activity rather than in a speaker’s device settings. Alexa places retention under Alexa Privacy, not the general device configuration page. Update the operating system or app, then search the account’s privacy settings for the exact terms shown above.

Old recordings remain after opting out
This is expected for Apple and Google unless you perform their separate deletion action. Google explicitly says turning off the audio switch leaves previously saved recordings in place. For Alexa, the do-not-save choice removes existing associated recordings, but cloud deletion can take time and text data follows its own schedule.
A speaker responds even though audio saving is off
Saving and processing are different. A deliberate request can still be processed to produce an answer. To prevent wake-word activation, mute the hardware microphone or disable the wake phrase on the speaker. Check that the physical mute indicator is active; an account setting alone does not guarantee that the microphone is electrically disabled.
A mistaken interaction appears in history
False activations can create an audio item after a device mishears surrounding speech as its wake phrase. Open the provider’s activity history, inspect the item and delete it. On Google and Alexa, also check the associated transcript or typed request rather than removing only the audio entry.
Only one person’s settings changed
Account controls follow the signed-in account, not necessarily every person who can speak to a shared speaker. Confirm the account shown in Google Account, the Apple device used to set up HomePod, or the Amazon account registered to the Echo. Repeat the audit for other household accounts and profiles.
A feature stopped working after cleanup
Reduced personalization is an expected consequence of deleting interaction history. Alexa specifically says Voice ID will not work when recordings are not saved. Google Voice Match or other on-device personalization data may also be affected by broader account or device changes. Decide whether you want maximum retention reduction or those convenience features, then set each control deliberately.

What these settings can and cannot guarantee
- They can reduce provider-account retention. Each platform offers a documented way to stop, shorten or remove account-level audio history.
- They cannot promise zero processing. The assistant must process a spoken request to answer it, and wake-word systems perform local or device-level detection before a command is handled.
- They may not remove every related datum. Transcripts, typed requests, Voice Match, Voice ID, personalization records and third-party skill data can have different lifecycles.
- They are not universal microphone switches. Use a hardware mute control or disable the wake phrase when the requirement is to prevent voice activation at the device.
- Availability and labels can change. Apple, Google and Amazon revise account pages and software labels, so verify the current wording on the signed-in device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off a saving setting stop the assistant from hearing a command I intentionally speak?
No. The documented controls govern account retention. Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa still need to process an intentional request to answer it. Use a device microphone mute or disable the wake phrase when you need to prevent voice activation.
Do I need to change settings on every speaker in my home?
Change the account setting for each assistant account and verify which account each shared speaker uses. Google’s account control applies wherever that account is signed in, while HomePod follows the Apple device used during setup.

Alexa treats audio separately from transcripts and typed requests. When recordings are not saved, Amazon says those text items remain for 30 days after the last interaction in the chat before automatic deletion, unless you delete them sooner in Alexa Privacy.
Can a third-party Alexa skill still have data after I clear Alexa history?
Yes. Amazon says data held by a skill developer or outside Amazon’s cloud may not be removed by Alexa’s account controls. Review the privacy terms of any skill used for sensitive tasks.
