How to Stop Your iPhone or Android Phone From Saving Location History

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

To stop location history, disable the history feature and erase records already saved. On iPhone, turn off Significant Locations (called Significant Locations & Routes on some versions), then tap Clear History. On Android, turn off and delete Google Maps Timeline, then review app permissions and Android’s location-accuracy and scanning controls. These steps stop the relevant history systems, but they do not automatically revoke every app’s live-location permission.

Location history is not the same as live location

Your phone has several independent location controls. A history feature stores places or routes over time; an app permission lets an app request your current position; and device-level settings control the signals the operating system can use to estimate location. Deleting a history record does not remove an app’s permission, while denying an app permission does not necessarily erase records that were saved previously.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For a complete privacy reset, work through both parts: first disable and delete the history service, then inspect app and system permissions. You can usually keep navigation available while limiting location access for other apps.

How iPhone stores and uses location information

Apple’s built-in history control is Significant Locations. Some iOS versions label the screen Significant Locations & Routes. Apple says these records are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. The setting can synchronize the significant-location list across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so clearing it removes the list on those devices as well.

This history is separate from ordinary app location access. Maps, weather, ride services, photo apps and other software can request location under their own permissions. Apple also describes a separate, encrypted process in which Location Services may send nearby Wi-Fi and cell-tower information, and—while you travel with Location Services enabled—GPS position, speed, direction and barometric pressure for crowdsourced databases. Apple says that crowdsourced data is encrypted and not personally identifying; it is not the same thing as the Significant Locations list.

Stop and erase Significant Locations on an iPhone

1. Turn off the history feature

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Choose Location Services.
  4. Scroll to System Services.
  5. Tap Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes.
  6. Authenticate if iOS asks for your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, then switch the feature off.

The label and exact wording can vary by iOS release, but the setting remains inside Location Services and System Services. Turning it off prevents that Apple history feature from continuing to build its list.

2. Clear the records that already exist

On the same Significant Locations screen, tap Clear History and confirm. Apple states that this clears significant locations on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Switching the feature off without using Clear History leaves older records in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restrict individual apps without disabling navigation

  1. Return to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Open an app in the list.
  3. Select Never, Ask Next Time, or While Using the App, according to what the app needs.
  4. Where shown, turn Precise Location off if the app only needs an approximate area.

Never blocks location requests. Ask Next Time makes iOS request permission again. While Using the App limits access to times when you are actively using the app, although some apps may offer additional background options. Turning off Precise Location supplies an approximate area instead of your exact position; it is useful for local content that does not require turn-by-turn accuracy.

4. Review Apple system services

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and inspect the individual services listed there. Disable services you do not want to use rather than turning off Location Services indiscriminately. Apple warns that disabling Location Services globally can stop important iPhone features, including services that depend on location for normal operation.

5. Check Maps visits and route suggestions

Apple Maps has additional history-like features. Apple’s privacy documentation says Visited Places, Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations require Significant Locations & Routes and Maps location access. In Maps, open Library > Visits and use Keep Visits to choose how long visits are retained. Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted. If you want Maps to keep working for directions but not retain visits, review this retention control separately after changing Significant Locations.

6. Understand what an iPhone shutdown does not promise

Turning off Significant Locations does not make the phone invisible to every network or app. A permitted app can still obtain live location, and Apple documents emergency-location handling as an exception. During an emergency, location information may still be used or transmitted to help responders. Keep that distinction in mind before disabling all Location Services.

Stop and delete Google Maps Timeline on Android

Google Maps Timeline is a Google Account feature rather than a generic Android log. Google says Timeline is off by default and can be enabled only when you opt in. When it is enabled, Google says precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline on each device, even when Google apps are not being used.

1. Open Timeline controls

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Choose Your Timeline.
  4. Open the settings or review controls for Timeline.

You can also manage the feature through My Google Activity. The wording and layout can differ between Maps releases, so use the Timeline settings or activity controls associated with your Google Account if the menu is arranged differently.

2. Turn Timeline off

Use the Timeline control to stop future collection. Turning the feature off addresses new Timeline entries; it does not by itself remove the entries already stored.

3. Delete existing Timeline data

From the Timeline controls, choose the option to delete Timeline data. Google allows Timeline data to be deleted in whole or in part, so you can remove the complete history or select a narrower period where the interface offers that choice. Confirm the deletion rather than simply leaving the screen after selecting dates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Set automatic deletion if you keep Timeline enabled

If you decide that a limited history is useful, configure Timeline’s auto-delete option instead of retaining records indefinitely. Select the available retention period in the Timeline controls and save it. Auto-delete is a forward-looking retention rule; it does not replace an immediate deletion when you want older records gone now.

Limit Android app and device location access

Review each app’s permission

Open Android Settings > Location and use the app-permission area to review which applications can access location. Remove access from apps that do not need it. For apps that need location only during use, choose the while-in-use option where your Android version provides it. Many Android versions also let you choose approximate rather than precise location for an individual app.

Keep the permission for your navigation app if you need directions, and remove or narrow permissions for apps whose location feature is incidental. This per-app review is independent of Google Maps Timeline: deleting Timeline does not revoke these permissions.

Turn down Location Accuracy on Android 12 and later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Location.
  3. Choose Location Services.
  4. Tap Location Accuracy.
  5. Turn Improve Location Accuracy off.

With improved accuracy disabled, Google says the phone may rely on GPS and device sensors when available instead of combining them with additional network-based signals. Position fixes can take longer or be less accurate indoors, and Maps or lost-device features may work less reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning separately

In Settings > Location > Location Services, review the separate switches for Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. These scanning functions can help the phone estimate its position, including when the main Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection is not being used for an active session. Turn them off if reducing those location inputs is more important than improving positioning in buildings and dense urban areas.

Know the emergency exception

Disabling Location Accuracy does not guarantee that no location can be transmitted during an emergency. Google documents that emergency location services or a mobile carrier can still send enhanced location during an emergency call or text. This safety behavior is separate from ordinary Timeline collection and may operate even when everyday location settings are restricted.

iPhone and Android controls compared

Control iPhone Android
History feature Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes, managed under Location Services > System Services. Google Maps Timeline, managed through Google Maps or My Google Activity.
Where the history is associated Apple describes Significant Locations as encrypted and synchronized for devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Timeline is a Google Account feature; when enabled, it saves precise device location to the account’s Timeline.
Stopping future entries Switch off Significant Locations. Turn off Timeline.
Deleting existing entries Tap Clear History on the Significant Locations screen. Use Timeline deletion controls to remove all or selected data.
Automatic retention Maps provides a Keep Visits retention choice for Visited Places. Timeline provides an auto-delete setting when you choose to keep the feature.
Per-app controls Never, Ask Next Time, or While Using the App; Precise Location can be disabled per app. App permissions can be removed or limited, and supported versions offer approximate or precise choices.
Device-level precision controls System Services can be reviewed individually; a global Location Services switch is available but can disable important features. Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning are separate controls under Location Services.
Main functionality trade-off Restricting location can affect Maps and other location-dependent features; Apple warns that a global shutdown stops important iPhone functions. Reducing accuracy can affect Maps and lost-device finding because the phone may rely mainly on GPS and sensors.
Emergency behavior Emergency location may still be used or transmitted for emergency response. Emergency Location Services or a carrier may send enhanced location during an emergency call or text.

Choose the least disruptive privacy setup

You want no travel history but still need navigation

  • On iPhone, turn off Significant Locations and clear the history, then leave Maps set to the permission level you need for directions. Review Maps Visits separately.
  • On Android, turn off and delete Timeline, keep navigation permission for Maps, and remove location access from unrelated apps.
  • Do not disable global Location Services or Location Accuracy unless you accept reduced navigation and device-finding performance.

You want approximate location for ordinary apps

  • On iPhone, leave Location Services available but switch off Precise Location for apps that only need a region.
  • On Android, choose approximate location for supported apps and keep precise access only for functions such as navigation that genuinely require it.
  • Timeline settings still need their own review; approximate app permissions do not erase a Google Account history already saved.

You want the strongest everyday reduction in location signals

  • Disable the relevant history feature and delete its stored records.
  • Remove location permission from every nonessential app.
  • On Android, turn off Improve Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning, understanding that indoor accuracy and lost-device functions can suffer.
  • On iPhone, disable unneeded System Services individually instead of assuming that one switch covers every source.

Troubleshooting when history appears to continue

A new entry appears after you cleared history

Check whether the history feature was actually switched off. On iPhone, revisit Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes and verify the switch. On Android, return to Google Maps Timeline controls and confirm that Timeline is off. Also inspect whether a separate Maps Visits feature or another app is creating its own activity record; deleting one service does not erase another service’s data.

An app still knows where you are

Open the app’s location permission directly. History deletion is not a permission change. Set the app to Never, Ask Next Time or While Using on iPhone, or remove or narrow its Android location permission. On either platform, turn off precise access when an approximate area is sufficient.

Maps became inaccurate after changing settings

On iPhone, check that Maps still has the permission level required for navigation and that Location Services was not disabled globally. On Android, verify Location Accuracy and the scanning switches. Google says that with improved accuracy off, GPS and sensors may be the only available inputs, which can reduce performance indoors or where satellite signals are obstructed.

You are concerned about an emergency call

Everyday privacy controls do not override emergency handling. Apple and Google both document circumstances in which emergency location can still be used or transmitted. If you are changing settings for personal privacy, make that safety trade-off consciously rather than expecting a complete block during an emergency.

Final privacy checklist

  • Disable iPhone Significant Locations or Android Google Maps Timeline.
  • Delete the existing history with Clear History or Timeline deletion controls.
  • Set a retention rule if you intentionally keep any Maps or Timeline history.
  • Audit every app’s location permission, not just the maps app.
  • Use approximate or non-precise location for apps that do not need an exact position.
  • Review iPhone System Services or Android Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning according to the functionality you are willing to lose.
  • Remember that emergency location handling can remain available for response services.
