How to stop Windows 11 widgets from using too much memory or network data

The most direct way to reduce Windows 11 Widgets activity is to hide the Widgets taskbar item: open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items, then turn Widgets off. This removes the taskbar entry, but it does not completely remove the Widgets board: Windows+W and supported touch gestures can still open it. If you want to keep Widgets, remove cards you do not use and reduce dashboard notifications instead.

What the Windows 11 Widgets switch actually does

Widgets is the Windows 11 board that can show weather, news, sports, traffic, finance and other cards. Those cards may refresh content and notifications, so people on limited connections or devices with tight memory budgets often want less activity.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft documents the taskbar switch as a way to hide the Widgets button, not as a promise that every Widgets-related component stops running. Turning it off is therefore the best built-in first step, but it should not be described as a complete uninstall or a guaranteed block on all background network traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s current support guidance does not publish a fixed RAM footprint, a network-data allowance or a guaranteed percentage reduction from disabling Widgets. The effect depends on your Windows build, enabled cards, notification settings, connection and other software. Treat any change you observe as device-specific rather than an expected number.

Widgets can also be powered by different apps or services. As a result, the controls, refresh behavior and privacy choices can differ between cards.

Decide which problem you are trying to solve

“Too much memory” and “too much network data” can describe several different symptoms. You might be seeing an alert, noticing that a metered connection is busy, finding that the computer feels short of memory, or simply wanting fewer news prompts. The appropriate setting depends on which of those is happening.

  • If you never open Widgets, hiding the taskbar item is the least complicated choice.
  • If you use one or two cards, keep the board and remove the cards that are irrelevant.
  • If the main annoyance is repeated prompts, review dashboard notifications as a separate task.
  • If you are trying to prove that Widgets is responsible for a broader performance problem, measure your own computer before and after making one change.

These controls limit the Widgets experience; they do not identify or repair every possible cause of high system memory or network use. Other applications and services can produce the same symptoms.

Turn off the Widgets taskbar item

This is the appropriate Windows 11 procedure for hiding Widgets from the taskbar.

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. You can also open Settings, choose Personalization, and select Taskbar.
  2. Find the Taskbar items section.
  3. Switch Widgets off.

Microsoft’s instructions for the current taskbar controls are available in Customize the Taskbar in Windows.

What changes after you switch it off

The Widgets icon disappears from the taskbar, so it is no longer an accidental click target and the board is less visible during normal work. This is the cleanest choice when you do not use the board and want to minimize its presence.

The setting is reversible. Returning to the same Taskbar items section and switching Widgets on restores the taskbar item. If you later decide to use the board, this avoids making a more disruptive system change.

What does not change

Hiding the icon is not the same as removing every access route. Microsoft says the board can still be opened with Windows+W, and a side-of-screen swipe can open it on devices and configurations where that touch gesture is supported. The switch should therefore be understood as a taskbar-visibility control, not a complete system-wide removal.

If someone else uses the computer, explain this distinction: a hidden icon does not mean the board has been uninstalled or that every related process is blocked. It simply removes one way of launching it.

Keep Widgets but reduce cards, refreshes and alerts

If you occasionally need weather or another card, keeping the board and trimming it is less disruptive than hiding it. This approach also lets you see which cards remain in the dashboard instead of treating the entire feature as one indivisible service.

Remove cards you do not use

  1. Open the Widgets board.
  2. Locate a card that you no longer need.
  3. Open that card’s More options menu.
  4. Choose Remove widget.

Removing unnecessary cards reduces the amount of content presented on the board and removes the card-specific experience you do not need. Repeat the process for each unwanted card rather than removing the entire board. Keep only the cards whose information you actually check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Card removal is granular. For example, you can retain weather while removing news, sports or finance cards that you never read. Because cards can be supplied by different apps or services, do not assume that removing one card changes the behavior of every other card.

Manage dashboard notifications

Open Widgets settings and review the dashboard notification controls. Turn off alerts that are not useful to you. This is especially relevant when the problem is repeated news or other prompts rather than the board’s occasional manual use.

Notification behavior can vary by widget because the board may combine services with their own settings. Review the options shown for the particular cards you keep instead of assuming one switch controls every provider. Removing a card and disabling dashboard notifications are separate actions: a card can be gone while a different retained service continues to show alerts.

Use a minimal-board approach

For a lighter setup, first remove every card you do not need, then review notifications, and finally decide whether the taskbar button is still useful. This order preserves access while you evaluate the result. If the board remains unnecessary, turn off the taskbar item after the cleanup.

Choose the right fix for your goal

Goal Recommended action Important limitation
Remove the taskbar entry Turn off Widgets under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items. Windows+W and supported touch gestures can still open the board.
Keep one or two useful cards Leave Widgets enabled and use each card’s More options > Remove widget command for everything else. Remaining cards can still refresh their own content.
Stop unwanted prompts Adjust dashboard notifications in Widgets settings. Available controls can differ between widgets and services.
Change Windows 10 News and interests behavior Use Microsoft’s separate Windows 10 instructions. Windows 10 controls do not map directly to Windows 11.
Find out whether Widgets is the cause Record comparable memory and network observations, make one change, and compare again. There is no official universal savings figure to use as a target.

Do not rely on the general background-app switch as a Widgets fix

Windows has a background-app permissions page, but it is not a universal off switch for every component that can appear in the Widgets experience. Microsoft’s Windows background apps and your privacy guidance explicitly states: “Desktop apps won’t appear in your Choose which apps can run in the background list and are not affected by the Let apps run in the background setting.”

That qualification matters because a general background-app setting may not expose the component you are trying to control. Use the dedicated Widgets taskbar setting and the board’s own card and notification controls first. Do not assume that changing the general background-app list guarantees that Widgets stops using memory or network data.

If a suggested fix tells you to disable every background app, treat it as a different intervention with different side effects. It may affect supported applications while leaving desktop components untouched, and it does not provide a documented, universal Widgets result.

Windows 11 is not the same as Windows 10 News and interests

Some troubleshooting pages describe Windows 10’s News and interests feature rather than Windows 11 Widgets. The names and controls are different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Stay Up to Date With News and Interests page covers the Windows 10 experience. It documents a Reduce taskbar updates option for that feature, but Microsoft says this option is unavailable in Windows 11. Do not search for that control in Windows 11 or treat its absence as a fault.

For Windows 11, use the Widgets switch in Taskbar items, or manage individual cards and notifications inside the Widgets board. A guide that uses Windows 10 labels can send you to the wrong page and make it appear that your installation is missing a setting.

Check whether the change helped on your computer

Because Microsoft does not provide a universal memory or network figure, the only reliable measurement is your own before-and-after observation. This is optional; it is useful when you need to distinguish a real change from a coincidence.

  1. Before changing Widgets, note the symptoms you are trying to solve: unusually high memory pressure, unexpected network activity, repeated alerts or a metered-connection warning.
  2. Record a short baseline while using the computer normally. You can use Windows’ built-in system monitoring tools to observe overall memory and network activity; compare like-for-like periods rather than a busy session with an idle one.
  3. Apply one change at a time, such as hiding the taskbar item or removing several cards. If you change multiple unrelated settings simultaneously, you will not know which one affected the result.
  4. Use the computer under similar conditions and compare what you observe. Similar applications, connection state and activity make the comparison more meaningful.
  5. If there is no meaningful difference, restore the previous setting and investigate other applications or services instead of assuming Widgets is the cause.

Look for a repeatable pattern rather than a momentary change immediately after opening or closing the board. A single observation cannot establish how much memory or data a feature uses over time.

This approach avoids promising a specific saving that has not been established. A result can vary with the number and type of cards, how often they refresh, the Windows edition and build, connection state and other software running at the same time.

Common problems and practical responses

The Widgets icon is still visible

Reopen Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and check that the Widgets switch under Taskbar items is off. Make sure you changed the Windows 11 Widgets control rather than a Windows 10 News and interests instruction.

The board opens even though the icon is hidden

This is expected. The taskbar switch hides the button; it does not disable every entry point. Avoid Windows+W and supported touch gestures if you do not want to open the board.

Notifications continue after removing cards

Removing a card and controlling notifications are separate actions. Open Widgets settings and review dashboard notifications, then check the settings exposed by any remaining card or service. If a prompt comes from a retained card, removing an unrelated card will not necessarily affect it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A card returns or the board looks different

Check the board again and use the card’s own More options menu. The available cards and controls can vary because the board may combine different apps or services. Do not infer from one card’s behavior that every card is configured identically.

Memory or network use remains high

There is no Microsoft-published threshold that identifies a normal Widgets footprint, so a persistent problem cannot be diagnosed from a single number. Confirm that the intended setting was applied, compare your own before-and-after observations, and examine other running applications and services if the symptom remains. The general background-app switch is not a guaranteed solution for desktop components.

Privacy and data considerations by widget

A Widgets board can combine cards supplied by different apps or services. Each card may have its own content source, refresh schedule and privacy choices. If network use or data sharing is the concern, remove cards you do not trust or need, then review the settings available for the cards you keep.

Hiding the taskbar item reduces visibility and accidental access, while removing a card removes that card from your board. Neither action should be presented as a universal statement about every service that may be installed on the PC. The safest interpretation is limited: you changed the Windows 11 Widgets entry point or one card’s presence, not every provider’s behavior.

Frequently overlooked details

  • There is no official savings number. Microsoft’s support pages explain the controls but do not quantify RAM or network reductions.
  • Taskbar visibility and complete deactivation are different. The board remains reachable through Windows+W and supported touch gestures.
  • Card removal is granular. You can keep useful information while eliminating cards that refresh content you never read.
  • Notifications have their own controls. Removing a card is not a substitute for reviewing dashboard alerts.
  • Widgets may involve several services. Settings and behavior can differ from one card to another.
  • Windows 10 advice may be wrong for Windows 11. In particular, Windows 10’s Reduce taskbar updates option is not available in Windows 11.
  • The background-app page is not universal. Desktop apps do not appear in that list and are not affected by its general setting.
  • A measurement is optional, not a promise. Compare your own computer under similar conditions if you need evidence of a change.

Recommended order of operations

  1. If you never use Widgets, turn off Widgets in Taskbar items.
  2. If you still need the board, leave it enabled and remove every unnecessary card.
  3. Adjust dashboard notifications so alerts match your needs.
  4. Observe your own memory and network behavior before and after the change.
  5. If the symptom persists, investigate other applications and services rather than applying unsupported background-app workarounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off Widgets stop all network traffic and memory use?

No. Microsoft documents the switch as hiding the taskbar item. The board can still open with Windows+W or supported touch gestures, and Microsoft does not promise that every related component stops running or provide a fixed saving.

How do I remove just one Windows 11 widget?

Open the Widgets board, open the unwanted card’s More options menu, and choose Remove widget. Repeat for other cards you do not need.

Why can I still open Widgets after hiding the icon?

Hiding the taskbar item does not remove the other documented entry points. Windows+W and supported side-of-screen touch gestures can still open the board.

Is Reduce taskbar updates available in Windows 11?

No. Microsoft documents that control for Windows 10 News and interests and says it is unavailable in Windows 11. Use the Windows 11 Widgets taskbar switch and the board’s card and notification settings instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Windows’ general background-app setting disable Widgets?

It is not a guaranteed fix. Microsoft says desktop apps do not appear in the background-app list and are not affected by the general Let apps run in the background setting.

How can I tell whether Widgets caused my high memory or data use?

Make a short baseline observation, apply one Widgets change, and compare similar usage periods with Windows’ built-in monitoring tools. If there is no meaningful difference, investigate other applications and services.

The Bottom Line

For the strongest supported reduction in Windows 11 Widgets activity, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items and switch Widgets off. Remember that this hides the taskbar button rather than removing every access route. If you want to keep the board, remove unused cards and manage dashboard notifications. Microsoft publishes no universal RAM or network-saving figure, so verify the effect on your own computer and do not rely on Windows 10’s unavailable Reduce taskbar updates control.
