To stop WhatsApp Desktop from filling your Mac’s Downloads folder, turn off the media categories you do not want in WhatsApp > Settings (or your profile picture) > Chats > Media auto-download. Disable photos, audio, videos and documents as needed. WhatsApp states that the folder used for saved files is determined by your computer settings, so this preference stops automatic downloading rather than changing the destination itself.
Turn off automatic downloads in WhatsApp Desktop
WhatsApp Desktop downloads incoming media automatically when its Media auto-download options are enabled. Disabling those categories keeps new pictures, sound files, videos or documents from being written to Downloads without your approval. You can still choose to download an individual file later.

- Open WhatsApp on your Mac.
- Open Settings. Depending on the app release, you may reach Settings by clicking your profile picture.
- Select Chats.
- Open Media auto-download.
- Deselect each category you want to block automatically: Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents.
After this change, incoming items remain available in the conversation for manual download, but WhatsApp will not automatically save the disabled types to the Mac’s download location. If you want to block only images, for example, clear Photos and leave the other categories enabled.

It stops automatic saving
The setting controls whether selected media types are downloaded as messages arrive. This is the practical fix for a Downloads folder that keeps filling with WhatsApp pictures or attachments.

It does not choose a new folder
WhatsApp’s Help Center wording is: “The folder where your files are saved is determined by your computer settings.” In other words, WhatsApp Desktop’s auto-download controls determine whether a file is fetched automatically; they do not provide a separate WhatsApp destination picker in the documented setting. A file you deliberately download can still follow macOS’s configured download behavior.
Manual downloads still work
With automatic downloads disabled, open the chat, select the file and use its download control when you actually want a copy. That manual action is separate from automatic media downloading and can still place the file in the computer’s configured download location.
If you use WhatsApp Web in Safari
WhatsApp Web runs inside Safari, so Safari controls where downloaded files are saved. To redirect them:

- Open Safari.
- Open Safari > Settings (called Preferences in some older macOS releases).
- Open the General tab.
- Find Save downloaded files to.
- Choose the folder you want to use instead of Downloads.
This changes Safari’s general download destination, not just WhatsApp Web. Downloads from other websites will use the same destination until you change the setting again. If the problem is unwanted automatic media rather than the folder location, also review WhatsApp Web’s own media-download behavior and avoid selecting files unless you need them.
Check macOS access permissions
If macOS asks whether WhatsApp may access Downloads, Desktop or Documents, the operating system is applying its Files & Folders privacy controls. Review the permission at System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders, then locate WhatsApp and turn access to the relevant folder on or off.
This is an access-control decision, not an auto-download preference. Removing permission may prevent WhatsApp from reading or writing that location, but it does not replace the Media auto-download controls. If you revoke access and a needed export or download fails, return to this panel and allow access again, then retry the operation.

Common problems and fixes
Pictures still appear after disabling Photos
Check that you changed the setting in the same client that is active. WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web have different controls. Files already downloaded are not removed when auto-download is disabled; move or delete those existing copies from Finder if necessary.

Only documents continue downloading
Media categories are independent. Reopen Chats > Media auto-download and clear Documents as well as any other category you do not want fetched.
Safari keeps using Downloads
Confirm the Safari destination under Safari > Settings > General > Save downloaded files to. Selecting a new folder affects all Safari downloads, so check the chosen location before saving files from other sites.

The menu names look different
WhatsApp can adjust labels in later releases. Look for the equivalent profile or Settings entry, then Chats and a media or automatic-download section. WhatsApp’s official Mac page lists support for macOS 11 or later; updating an older installation can change the visible layout.

WhatsApp officially supports WhatsApp for Mac on macOS 11 and later. The app is available through the Apple App Store or WhatsApp’s desktop download page. If your Mac is running an older system, unsupported behavior or missing settings may not be resolved by changing the download preferences.

Choose the fix that matches the problem
- Downloads filling automatically: disable the unwanted categories in WhatsApp Desktop’s Media auto-download settings.
- You want a different folder for WhatsApp Web: change Safari’s Save downloaded files to destination, remembering that the change applies to all Safari downloads.
- macOS blocks access: review WhatsApp under Privacy & Security > Files & Folders.
- You need one file occasionally: leave automatic downloads off and use the chat’s manual download control only when required.

Will turning off auto-download delete files already in my Downloads folder?
No. It affects future automatic downloads. Existing WhatsApp files must be moved or deleted separately in Finder.
