If a webpage keeps making noise after you leave it, the most reliable fix on Android is to change that website’s sound permission in Chrome. Open the noisy site, tap View site information beside the address bar, choose Permissions, and change the sound setting. This blocks audio from that site in Chrome without changing every other website.
Chrome also has a global control at More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Sound. Use it only when you want to change the default for sites generally. Blocking sound is separate from stopping video autoplay: a page can continue playing video silently, so use an autoplay control when your browser provides one.

Stop one website from making sound in Chrome
Use the site-specific permission first when one page is the problem. It is narrower than changing Chrome’s default and avoids affecting unrelated sites that you still want to hear. This is the practical answer to questions such as “How do I stop a website playing sound after I switch tabs?” or “How do I mute one website in Chrome on Android?”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the website that is producing audio in Chrome for Android.
- Tap View site information to the left of the address bar. Depending on the Chrome version, this appears as the site-information icon beside the web address.
- Tap Permissions.
- Find the sound permission and change it to the option that blocks or does not allow sound.
- Return to the page and test it. If the site had already started playback, reload the page or close and reopen its tab after changing the permission.
Google Chrome Help documents this site-level route and also says that a site’s settings can be reset from the same area. Resetting is useful if you want to remove a custom rule and let Chrome use its normal default again.

What this change covers
The rule applies to that website within Chrome. It is not a universal Android audio switch, and it does not control sound generated by another browser or by a separate app. If the noise continues, first establish that the active audio really comes from the Chrome page whose permission you changed.
A site permission is also narrower than a phone-wide mute. It can silence a particular news page, forum, game, advertising-heavy page, or web app while leaving music lessons, meetings, accessibility content, and other websites available to play audio when you choose.
Why this is usually the best first move
A single-site rule limits side effects and makes the result easier to understand. You know which page was changed, and you can reverse the decision from the same permissions panel. If several tabs are open, work on the tab that is actually producing the sound rather than guessing from the tab title.

The site-specific route is especially useful when a page occasionally launches an advertisement or a video. You do not have to make every website silent just because one page behaved badly. If you later decide that the site should be audible again, revisit its permission and restore the normal setting or reset the site’s settings.
Change Chrome’s default sound permission for websites
When many sites are unexpectedly noisy, or when you want a stricter default for future browsing, change Chrome’s general sound setting:
- Open Chrome and tap the three-dot More menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Site settings.
- Tap Sound.
- Change the default sound setting to the option that prevents sites from playing sound.
Google’s official wording is: “By default, sites are allowed to play sounds.” The global setting changes that default for sites generally; individual site permissions can still be managed from a page’s View site information > Permissions panel.
Choose this route when your goal is a quiet-by-default browsing experience rather than a fix for one offender. It may affect websites that you would normally want to hear, so expect to allow sound selectively on those sites afterward. The global setting is a policy for Chrome’s default behavior; it is not a control for other Android browsers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the scope before changing anything
| Approach | Scope | Likely side effect | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site-specific sound permission | One website in Chrome | Other websites keep their existing behavior | Only one page is causing background audio |
| Chrome default sound setting | The default for websites in Chrome | Other sites may also be silent unless you allow them individually | You want a broad quiet-by-default policy |
| Samsung Internet autoplay control | Reportedly affects autoplaying videos in Samsung Internet | May prevent video playback rather than merely muting sound | You use Samsung Internet and want to investigate autoplay behavior |
The first two rows are Chrome permissions documented by Google. The Samsung Internet entry is based on a dated community report and should be treated as version-dependent, not as a guaranteed current menu.
Allowing selected sites after a global block
A global block does not mean you must give up all web audio. For a site where you want sound, open that site, use View site information > Permissions, and look for the site’s sound setting. The exact labels can vary with Chrome releases, but the principle is to use the site panel to create an exception to the browser default. Test the site after saving the change so you know whether the exception was applied to the address you intended.
Muting sound is not the same as stopping autoplaying video
Chrome’s sound permission answers the question “May this site output audio?” It does not establish that the page’s video element will stop running. A site can continue loading or playing a video with its audio track muted. You may still see motion, consume data, use battery, or encounter a video that becomes audible after another action changes its state.

This distinction matters because people often describe both symptoms as “background audio.” If the page is silent but a video keeps moving, the sound permission may be working exactly as designed. If the requirement is that no video starts at all, look for an autoplay control in the browser you use rather than repeatedly changing a mute permission.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the distinction below to identify the control you actually need:
- Unexpected noise: change the site’s sound permission in Chrome.
- Video must not start: look for an autoplay control in the browser you use. A sound permission alone should not be presented as an autoplay blocker.
- Both problems: address autoplay and sound separately, then test the page again.
Google’s media-control instructions that show a media panel and tab controls are labeled for computer Chrome. Do not assume that the desktop Chrome control in those instructions appears in the same place on Android. Android readers should use the Android site-permission path instead of following a computer-only media-panel procedure.
How to test whether the problem is audio or autoplay
- Open the affected page after changing its sound permission.
- Watch whether the video or animated media still starts.
- Listen for audio, including speech, music, or advertising.
- If motion continues but the page is silent, the sound permission worked and the remaining issue is autoplay or video behavior.
- If audio remains, revisit the permission panel for the exact site in Chrome and confirm that the rule was saved.
Repeat the test after reloading or reopening the tab. A page that was already loaded before the permission changed may retain its current media state until it is loaded again. This test prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing a mute setting when the real requirement is to stop a video element from starting.
Samsung Internet: look for an autoplay setting, but verify your version
A Samsung Members community post dated May 15, 2021 reported this route in Samsung Internet: Settings > Useful features > Allow autoplay videos. The reported control concerns autoplaying videos, which is broader than Chrome’s sound permission because it is intended to affect whether video starts automatically.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Because that route comes from community material rather than current official consumer instructions, treat it as a lead:
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Open its Settings.
- Look under Useful features for Allow autoplay videos, or a similarly named autoplay option.
- If the option exists, turn it off and test the affected page.
- If the menu is different or the control is absent, do not assume your installation supports the reported route. Check the current settings exposed by the installed version.
This setting should not be described as a verified Samsung Internet site-mute path. The available evidence does not confirm a current consumer control that blocks sound from one website while allowing its video to continue silently. A Samsung developer policy page about managed autoplay does not verify the consumer menu shown above.
When Samsung Internet’s control is the better match
If your complaint is that pages launch videos without asking, an autoplay preference is conceptually closer to the problem than a sound permission. If your only complaint is noise and you want the page’s visual content to remain available, a sound-specific control would be preferable; however, a current official Samsung Internet consumer route for per-site sound muting has not been established here.
Do not transfer assumptions between browsers. Turning off a Samsung Internet autoplay option, if present, should not be expected to change Chrome. Likewise, a Chrome site permission does not manage a page opened in Samsung Internet.
What to do when the page is still making noise
Confirm that Chrome is the source
Android can play audio from many places at once. Stop or pause other media and check the page again. A Chrome permission cannot silence a podcast app, a game, a social-media application, or another browser. If the sound disappears when Chrome is closed but the permission change had no effect, return to the exact site in Chrome and inspect its permission again.

Use a simple isolation test: leave the page open, pause other media apps, and then close or switch away from Chrome. If the noise stops only when Chrome is closed, the browser is a plausible source. If it continues, investigate another app or browser before changing more website permissions.
Check the exact website entry
Open the noisy page itself before using View site information. A permission changed for one site should not be treated as a rule for every site you visit. If the page redirects to a different web address, inspect the address shown when the audio occurs and manage that site’s permission separately if necessary.
Embedded players, advertising frames, and redirects can make it seem as if the original page is responsible when another address is involved. The safe approach is to inspect the address associated with the page that is audible and apply the permission there, then reload and retest.
Reopen the tab after changing permission
Permission changes should govern subsequent site behavior, but a page that was already running media may not immediately stop every element. Reload the page or close and reopen the tab, then test again. This also removes a currently loaded page state from the test.
Use Chrome’s reset option when a rule is confusing
Google says site settings can be reset from the site-information and permissions area. Reset the site’s settings when you are unsure which custom choices were made, then apply the sound rule again deliberately. Record whether the result is silence, continued muted video, or continued audible playback.
Resetting is useful when a site has accumulated several custom permissions and you no longer know which one controls the behavior. It returns the site to Chrome’s ordinary handling, after which you can make one deliberate sound change and test it.
Do not substitute desktop instructions
If you find advice telling you to use Chrome’s top-right media-control panel or tab audio controls, verify that it is specifically for Android. Google labels those controls as computer instructions, so they are not a dependable Android procedure.
Account for browser differences
A permission changed in Chrome does not automatically carry over to Samsung Internet or another browser. Repeat the investigation in the browser that is actually displaying the page. Likewise, a Samsung Internet autoplay preference should not be expected to change Chrome’s behavior.
Check what “fixed” means for your situation
There are at least three possible outcomes: the page becomes completely silent, the page remains visible but its video continues silently, or audible playback continues. Each outcome points to a different next step. Complete silence indicates that the sound permission likely worked. Silent motion indicates that autoplay or video behavior remains. Continued audio means you should verify the browser, site address, saved permission, and tab state before trying a different control.
Understanding the limits of Android-wide audio controls
There is no established universal Android setting in the available official material that suppresses all web audio while preserving every other kind of audio. That means a device-wide “mute websites only” promise would be too broad. Browser permissions are the reliable level at which to act: choose one site when possible, or change the browser default when you accept wider effects.

Lowering the phone’s media volume, enabling a general silent mode, or disconnecting speakers may hide the symptom, but those actions do not prevent a website from initiating playback and can also silence audio you intended to hear. They are not replacements for a site permission or autoplay preference.
No physical accessory is required for either Chrome permission path. Headphones, speakers, cases, and sound-isolation products can change what you hear, but they do not stop a website from initiating playback. The browser setting is the relevant fix.

Only one Chrome website is noisy
- Open that page in Chrome.
- Use View site information > Permissions.
- Block its sound.
- Reload and confirm whether the page is silent.
This keeps the change limited to the offending site and is the preferred starting point when you still want audio elsewhere.
Several Chrome websites are noisy
- Open More > Settings > Site settings > Sound.
- Change the default sound behavior.
- Allow sound selectively on sites where audio is wanted by using their individual permission panel.
Review the result on more than one page. A global default can affect unrelated sites, so make exceptions deliberately rather than assuming every site will behave identically.
A video starts and must not start at all
- Identify the browser displaying the page.
- Look for that browser’s autoplay control.
- In Samsung Internet, investigate Settings > Useful features > Allow autoplay videos if the option exists in your installed version.
- Do not assume Chrome’s sound permission has stopped the video.
The page is silent but video continues
That result is consistent with sound blocking. If silent playback still wastes data, battery, or attention, continue with an autoplay-specific setting rather than changing the sound permission repeatedly.

Use Chrome’s global sound setting to create a quiet default, then inspect the trusted site’s individual permissions and allow sound there if Chrome presents that option. This combines broad coverage with a narrow exception, but test the exception on the actual page where audio is needed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the global setting first: this can silence sites that you intended to hear. Start with the site-specific rule unless you genuinely want a broad default.
- Calling a mute rule an autoplay blocker: sound and video playback are separate behaviors.
- Using desktop Chrome directions on Android: media-panel controls can differ by platform.
- Assuming one browser controls another: permissions are browser-specific.
- Treating a 2021 community menu as permanent: Samsung Internet labels can change between versions.
- Blaming the phone before checking the browser: first identify which app and which page generated the audio.
- Testing only the already-loaded tab: reload or reopen the page after changing a permission so you test new page behavior.
- Ignoring a redirect: the audible address may differ from the page you first opened.
- Expecting a silent video to disappear: muting sound does not prove that the video element stopped running.
Frequently asked questions
How do I stop websites from playing audio in the background on Android?
In Chrome, open the noisy website, tap View site information beside the address bar, choose Permissions, and change the sound permission to block sound. Reload the page to test it. For a browser-wide default, use More > Settings > Site settings > Sound.
Can I mute just one website in Chrome on Android?
Yes. The site-specific permission is designed for that scope. It changes the sound behavior for the selected website in Chrome rather than changing the default for every site.
Will blocking sound stop a website’s video from autoplaying?
Not necessarily. A page can continue playing a video silently. If the video itself must not start, look for an autoplay control in the browser you use.

Sound blocking and autoplay are separate. Continued motion with no audible sound is consistent with a muted video that is still running. Use an autoplay-specific setting if you need to prevent that playback.
Best Value
Does Chrome’s setting control Samsung Internet?
No. Browser permissions are specific to the browser where they were changed. Investigate the page in the browser that is actually producing the audio.
Where is autoplay blocking in Samsung Internet?
A Samsung Members community post from May 15, 2021 reported Settings > Useful features > Allow autoplay videos. Menu names can change, so look for that option in the installed version and treat the route as version-dependent. It is an autoplay control, not a confirmed current per-site sound-mute path.
What if I cannot find the sound permission?
Make sure you opened the exact noisy page in Chrome and tapped its site-information control. If the page has redirected, inspect the current address. You can also reset the site’s settings from the permissions area and then check the sound setting again.
Is there an Android-wide switch that mutes websites but not other audio?
The documented controls here are browser-level, not a universal Android switch for all web audio. Phone-wide volume or silent-mode changes can also silence audio you want, so they are not equivalent to a website permission.
Bottom line for Android users
For Chrome, target the offending site through View site information > Permissions when you want the smallest change. Use More > Settings > Site settings > Sound when you want Chrome’s default to be quiet across websites. Remember that Google allows site sound by default, and that blocking sound does not prove that autoplaying video has stopped. Samsung Internet users can look for the reported autoplay option, but should verify the menu in the version installed on their phone because a current official consumer path has not been confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop websites from playing audio in the background on Android?
In Chrome, open the noisy website, tap View site information, choose Permissions, and block sound. For all Chrome sites by default, use More > Settings > Site settings > Sound.
Can blocking sound stop autoplaying video?
No. A page may continue playing muted video. Use an autoplay setting when the requirement is to prevent the video from starting.
Does a Chrome permission affect Samsung Internet?
No. Permissions apply to the browser where you set them.
What Samsung Internet setting may stop autoplay?
A May 15, 2021 Samsung Members post reported Settings > Useful features > Allow autoplay videos. Verify that the option exists in your installed version.
Why is audio still playing after I changed the permission?
Confirm Chrome is the source, check the exact current website address, revisit its permissions, and reload or reopen the tab. Another app or browser will not be controlled by Chrome’s setting.
The Bottom Line
Use Chrome’s site-specific permission to silence one noisy page, or change Site settings > Sound for a broad default. Treat autoplay as a separate problem: muted video may continue playing. Samsung Internet’s reported autoplay menu is version-dependent and should be verified on your phone.
