The reliable fix is to close the contact channel where it is being used: set your console or network account to accept requests and messages from friends only (or nobody), then block or mute the specific player and report conduct that breaks the rules. Check the game’s own social menu as well, because crossplay, a publisher account or in-game chat can bypass a platform-level setting.
Menus and available controls vary by country, account age, family settings, console generation and game mode. Use the official paths below, then test from the account that was receiving the contact.

Start with this five-minute lockdown
- Identify the channel. Look at the notification or message to see whether it came from your console/network account, the game’s publisher account, or an in-game chat, party or lobby.
- Change the default permission. In privacy or communication settings, set friend requests, direct messages, party invitations, voice chat and game invitations to Friends only or No one, wherever those choices exist.
- Block the account. Blocking usually stops more than a single message, but the exact scope differs by service. Use the block option on the player’s profile, message or recent-player list.
- Mute when you only need silence. Muting can suppress text or voice without preventing invitations, profile interaction or matchmaking.
- Report rule-breaking behavior. Submit the report while the message, player, recording or chat is still available. A report is an enforcement request; it is not a substitute for blocking.
- Repeat the check in the game itself. A platform block may not control a game’s own friends list, chat or crossplay system. Open the game’s Social, Privacy, Communication or Account settings and apply the same boundary.
Where unwanted contact can enter
Multiplayer games often have several independent identities. A stranger may reach you through a console network, a publisher account, a game-specific friends list, a party or voice channel, or a private-server invitation. Closing one route does not automatically close the others.
| Contact route | Best control | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Console or PC network friend request | Account privacy setting, then block or unfriend | Whether the setting applies to all devices linked to the account |
| Direct text or voice message | Communication permission, mute or block | Whether party chat and game chat use separate permissions |
| Party, lobby or game invitation | Invite permission or friends-only parties | Crossplay and invitations from people who are not platform friends |
| Game or publisher friends list | In-game privacy setting and in-game block | Whether the game synchronizes, or ignores, the platform block |
| Matchmaking or repeated encounters | Block, avoid-player or game-specific preference | Whether the game promises that blocked players will not be matched |
| Private-server or group chat | Server/group permissions, remove member, block and report | Who owns the space and which moderation tools they provide |
Do not assume that “friends only” means the same thing everywhere. One service may limit requests but still allow messages from recent players; another may use a single communication switch for messages, parties and games.

Steam: use Block All Communication or remove the friendship
Steam recommends not accepting unsolicited chat messages or friend requests. Open the unwanted player’s profile, message or friend-request view and choose the communication-blocking option. Steam’s Block All Communication prevents that player from sending Steam chat messages, friend or group invitations, or commenting on your profile and community items. The current Steam instructions are in Steam Support.
If the person is already on your Steam friends list, unfriend them. Steam says this removes their ability to contact you through Steam and limits their access to content you have set to private or friends-only. Unfriending changes the relationship; it is not identical to blocking an unknown account.
A game can maintain its own reporting and social tools. If the conduct happened inside a game, use that game’s report flow as well as Steam’s account-level control. A Steam block cannot guarantee that a third-party game will honor the block in every mode.

Report voice and text misconduct
Epic’s reporting guidance says voice chat can be reported in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys, with audio submitted as evidence; Fortnite also supports text-chat evidence. Report while the relevant conversation or player is visible. Epic Games Safety states: “We encourage everyone to report inappropriate conduct and content.” See Epic Games Support and Epic Games Safety’s reporting guidance.
PlayStation: control requests, parties, messages and crossplay invitations
On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Choose a preset, or select View and Customize Your Privacy Settings. Under Communication and multiplayer, review each permission rather than changing only the friend-request setting.
- Who can ask to be your friend
- Who can interact with you through parties, games and messages
- Whether to receive invitations to crossplay games
Choose the most restrictive option that still permits the way you play: friends only for a private group, or no one when you do not want unsolicited contact. PlayStation links these privacy choices to the account, so changes are reflected on the user’s devices. The exact labels and available choices can differ by region; confirm them in the current PlayStation privacy settings guide.
For a single nuisance account, open its profile or message and use block. Blocking is narrower than changing the account default: it addresses that player while leaving your normal friends list usable. If a game has its own chat or friends system, repeat the block there.
Roblox: restrict chat, messages, follows and private-server invitations
Roblox exposes several separate social controls. To limit friend chat, open Settings > Privacy & content maturity > Communication > Chat and Party with friends. Depending on age and availability, choose All friends, Trusted friends or No one. Choosing No one disables Party Chat.

Review the other privacy controls for who can chat, send messages, follow you into experiences or invite you to private servers. Roblox notes that communication features depend on age group and region, so a control shown in one account may not appear in another.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: block from recent players
Nintendo lets you find people you played with online and block them from the user’s profile or the recent-player list. On Switch 2, Nintendo says a blocked user cannot send friend requests, cannot join you in GameChat and will not be matched with you during online play. On the original Switch, Nintendo says blocked users cannot send friend requests and will not be matched during online play.
Nintendo explicitly warns that these blocks may not apply to every game or mode. If the unwanted contact continues in a game published by another company, use that game’s own block and report tools and follow the publisher’s instructions. The official steps and limitations are documented by Nintendo Support.
Block, mute, unfriend and report are different tools
| Action | Usually changes | Does not necessarily change | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mute | Whether you hear or see that player’s voice or text | Friend requests, invitations, profile access or matchmaking | You want silence during a session but do not need a full barrier |
| Block | Contact from one account; often messages, requests and invitations, and sometimes matchmaking | Every game, mode or linked account | A particular player is persistently contacting you |
| Unfriend | The friendship relationship and friends-only access | Independent in-game or cross-platform channels | You no longer want the person in your social graph |
| Report | Starts a moderation or safety review | Immediate blocking or guaranteed removal | The conduct violates rules, threatens safety or targets others |
Use more than one action when necessary: mute to finish the current match, block to stop direct contact, and report to preserve a record of misconduct. Do not treat a report as proof that the account has already been blocked.

Crossplay and publisher accounts can bypass a platform setting
Crossplay joins players who may not be friends on the same console or PC network. A game may authenticate through a publisher account, offer its own friends list, or run chat on servers outside the platform’s messaging system. That is why a platform-level “friends only” setting can appear to fail.
- Open the game’s Social, Privacy, Communication or Account menu.
- Set friend invites, direct messages, party invites and voice or text chat to the narrowest available option.
- Open the offending player’s in-game profile and use Block or Mute.
- Use the game’s Report command for behavior that violates its rules.
- Check whether the game offers crossplay invitations, recent-player contact or “allow communication from everyone” as a separate switch.
For a third-party game, consult the publisher’s current support instructions. Nintendo’s warning that blocks may not apply to all games or modes is a useful general rule: no platform can promise that one block covers every external social system.
Child accounts and family settings
Age and family controls can override an individual user’s choices. A child account may not show every communication option, or a setting such as “Nobody” may be locked. The family manager, parent or guardian may need to change the permission from the account-management console or web page.
- Check the account’s age and country or region.
- Open the family-management or parental-control dashboard, not only the game menu.
- Set communication, friend requests, parties, voice chat and crossplay invitations independently if the service separates them.
- Have the parent or guardian review blocked and reported accounts.
- Recheck after a console update or account migration, because child-account permissions can differ from adult accounts.
On PlayStation, child-account privacy may be managed by the family manager, parent or guardian. Epic likewise notes that parental controls can lock its friend-request setting. Roblox’s communication choices depend partly on age group and region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFixes for common symptoms
“I set requests to nobody, but invitations still arrive.”
You probably changed friend requests without changing party or game invitations. Return to the communication screen and inspect each permission. Then check the game’s own social settings and crossplay-invite switch.
Best Value
“The player is blocked, but I still see them in matches.”
A block may cover messages and invitations without covering matchmaking. Some services promise non-matching only in particular games or modes; others do not promise it at all. Use the game’s avoid-player or in-game block feature if available, and verify whether the player is contacting you through a second account.
“Muting worked for voice, but text keeps appearing.”
Voice and text are often separate channels. Keep the mute for voice, then disable text chat or block the account. If the chat is a team or lobby feed, look for a channel-level setting in addition to the player mute.
“The setting is missing or greyed out.”
Check account age, region, parental controls and whether you are signed into the account that owns the game. On managed child accounts, the family manager may have to change the permission. Some games expose controls only after signing into the publisher account.
Recommended Free Tools
“The same person returns with new accounts.”
Set the default permission to friends only or nobody instead of blocking accounts one at a time. Report the pattern, include each relevant username, and save message or chat evidence when the service permits it. Avoid replying; a response can confirm that the account is reaching you.
“I reported someone and nothing changed immediately.”
Reporting starts a review and does not necessarily block the sender at once. Block or mute the account separately, leave the affected party or lobby, and use the service’s safety channel if there is a credible threat.
Verify that the boundary is working
- Sign out of the game and platform app, then sign back in so account permissions refresh.
- Ask a trusted friend to test only the permission you changed, or use a second account you control where the service allows testing.
- Check notifications, direct messages, party invites and in-game chat separately.
- Launch a crossplay session and confirm whether invitations are still possible.
- Record the exact setting, date and account if you manage a child’s or shared console account.
If a test still succeeds, identify which identity generated it: console account, publisher account, game account or group owner. Apply the restriction at that layer rather than repeatedly changing the wrong menu.
Keep the settings usable without overblocking
A complete lockout is appropriate when a child is being targeted or when harassment is continuing. For an adult who still needs team coordination, a friends-only boundary often preserves normal play while stopping strangers. You can also keep invitations restricted, allow text from friends, and mute voice from everyone outside a known party if the service offers those combinations.
- Do not accept a request merely to discover who sent it.
- Do not share your real name, location, school, schedule or other identifying details in game chat.
- Capture the player name, message and time before leaving a session when you intend to report it.
- Use the platform and the game’s report systems when both services govern the conduct.
- Review privacy settings after major game, console or account changes.
The practical rule is simple: set a restrictive default, block the individual, report violations, and verify every channel that can carry contact. Because crossplay, third-party games, age controls and regional features vary, treat any single block as scoped to the service that provides it rather than as a universal barrier.
