To stop a listed app from opening when you sign in to Windows, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch it off. You can also open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the app, and choose Disable. Task Manager shows startup-impact information alongside the same registered-app list available in Settings.
If the app is not listed, check the Windows Startup folders. And if your real concern is what an app does after it opens—not whether it launches at sign-in—you may need to change its background permissions or its own settings instead.

Choose the right control: startup or background activity?
A startup setting controls whether an app launches automatically when you sign in to Windows. A background permission concerns certain activity while you are not actively using an app. These controls solve different problems: disabling startup does not necessarily change an app’s background permissions, and changing background permissions is not the same as stopping it from launching at sign-in.
For a startup app that appears in the built-in list, use Settings or Task Manager. If it is missing, check the Startup folders. For background activity, Windows may provide a separate permission for some apps, while desktop apps generally need to be managed in the app itself.

Turn off a listed app in Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Apps > Startup.
- Find the app you do not want to launch when you sign in.
- Switch its setting to Off.
This is the most direct option when you want a simple on/off change and do not need to review impact details. The Startup page lists registered startup apps. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; the exact labels or layout may differ slightly between versions.
Use Task Manager to review startup impact
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or search for Task Manager from Start.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the listed apps and their startup-impact information.
- Select the app you want to prevent from launching, then choose Disable.
Task Manager and Settings provide the same list of registered startup apps. Task Manager’s advantage is that it adds impact information to help you decide what to examine first. An app marked with a higher impact may be a more useful candidate to review, but the label is not a promise that disabling it will improve boot time by a particular amount.
What the impact labels mean
Microsoft defines these labels using startup CPU and disk activity. The thresholds below are Microsoft’s operational definitions in its current support guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not study results or estimates of time saved by disabling an app.

| Task Manager label | Microsoft’s stated threshold | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Total CPU usage under 300 milliseconds and disk usage under 292 kilobytes | Low measured CPU and disk activity under these thresholds; it does not mean the app is unnecessary. |
| Medium | CPU usage under one second but over 300 milliseconds, or disk usage under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes | At least one of the stated CPU or disk ranges falls into the medium band. |
| High | CPU usage over one second, or disk usage over 3 megabytes | At least one of the stated CPU or disk amounts exceeds the high threshold. |
The thresholds describe recorded startup activity, not the app’s overall importance, current behavior, or the exact delay a person experiences. If Windows does not show an impact label for an entry, the available guidance does not establish why it is absent or what performance change disabling it would produce.
If an app is missing from the startup list
A missing entry does not automatically mean that the app is broken. Some apps use shortcuts in a Startup folder rather than appearing in the normal registered-app list. Microsoft’s recommended fallback is to inspect the folder for the current user and, if appropriate, the folder shared by all users.
Check the current user’s Startup folder
- Press Windows key+R to open Run.
- Enter
shell:startupand press Enter. - Look for a shortcut to the app you do not want to launch at sign-in.
- If you find the unwanted shortcut, remove that shortcut from the folder.
Check the Startup folder for all users
- Press Windows key+R to open Run.
- Enter
shell:common startupand press Enter. - Look for a shortcut to the app.
- If you find the unwanted shortcut, remove that shortcut from the folder.
The first command opens the current user’s Startup folder; the second opens the all-users folder. Check the appropriate location for the account or accounts affected. These steps address a startup shortcut, not the app’s installation. Some apps may use other configuration methods, including registry Run entries. Microsoft cautions that registry edits can have unintended consequences, so Registry Editor is not the appropriate default next step for a general user trying to disable one startup app.

Stop some apps from running in the background
If the app does not need to be prevented from opening at sign-in but you want to restrict what it does when you are not using it, look for a background permission instead. Microsoft says supported Store apps may expose a Background app permissions setting. The available control depends on the app and Windows version.

Check the desktop app’s own settings for options controlling background operation. A startup toggle and a background setting should not be treated as interchangeable: choose based on whether the unwanted behavior happens at sign-in or while the app is not in use.
When Windows says “We couldn’t find this app”
A startup entry with the message “We couldn’t find this app” may point to a removable or network drive, a missing file path, or an app that has been uninstalled. Inspect the entry’s information before deciding what to do. The message alone does not identify which cause applies, so avoid assuming that every such entry represents the same problem.

If the entry points to a shortcut in a Startup folder, use the folder steps above to locate it. If it is a registered entry, review the details Windows provides and consider whether the app is still installed or its original location is available. Avoid making registry changes simply because an entry is unclear; Microsoft warns that editing the registry can have unintended consequences.

Microsoft notes that apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage. Preventing an unnecessary app from launching may reduce that app’s startup activity, but Microsoft’s support guidance does not promise a fixed speed gain from disabling an individual app. The impact depends on the app and the computer; the Task Manager label is a measurement category, not a before-and-after prediction.
For that reason, use the built-in list to make a targeted change rather than disabling entries indiscriminately. If you depend on an app being available as soon as you sign in, leaving its startup setting enabled may be more useful than reducing its startup activity. You can reverse a change by returning to the same control and enabling the app again.
Why a clean boot is not the normal fix
A clean boot is a troubleshooting method for diagnosing conflicts, not the everyday way to turn off one app at sign-in. Microsoft warns that misusing System Configuration can make a computer unusable and advises changing advanced boot options only with Microsoft support guidance. A clean boot can also temporarily remove functionality. For a single unwanted startup app, use Settings, Task Manager, or the Startup-folder shortcut method instead.
Windows 10 support status
The startup controls described here apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10. The startup steps may still be available, but this support-status change is important if you are deciding how to maintain a Windows 10 PC.
