1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStop unwanted AI-agent orders by separating automated purchasing from fraud, then apply the control at the right point. Inventory-hoarding and flash-sale bots need checkout throttling; card-testing and chargeback activity needs payment and order-risk controls; spam needs storefront hardening. Shopify Plus can schedule a bot-protection event for Online Store checkouts, while every Shopify plan can use hCaptcha, updated themes and apps, traffic monitoring, payment-provider fraud tools, and order review. Treat legitimate agent-assisted shopping as a monitored sales channel rather than blocking every request that originates from software.
Shopify reported that AI-driven traffic to its stores was three times higher year over year in the second quarter of 2026, and that visitors arriving from AI search converted nearly 80% better on product pages than visitors from traditional organic search. That growth makes indiscriminate blocking expensive: the objective is to stop unauthorized automation without rejecting a buyer who has deliberately asked an agent to shop.

First, identify what the automation is doing
“AI bot” is not a single threat. Shopify’s taxonomy distinguishes checkout bots, financial-fraud bots, restock bots, account-creation bots, and scrapers. The same store can see several types at once, and each leaves different evidence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Auto-checkout and inventory-hoarding bots
These programs add scarce products to carts or complete checkout faster than people can. During a launch they inflate the queue, reserve inventory, and prevent genuine customers from buying. A successful payment may never be the goal; holding stock or exhausting a product allocation can be enough.

Financial-fraud and card-testing bots
These create fraudulent orders, submit many low-value transactions to test stolen card details, or generate chargebacks. Repeated payment declines, small authorization amounts, and clusters of orders tied to the same address, email pattern, device, or proxy are stronger evidence than the fact that a request was automated.
Account, form, and scraping abuse
Account-creation bots open large numbers of customer accounts, while form bots target contact or comment pages. Scrapers copy catalog and pricing data. They may not place an order, but they consume resources, pollute analytics, and can precede checkout abuse.
Legitimate agent-assisted shopping
A customer may intentionally ask an AI agent to find a product and complete a purchase. Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) supports agent checkout through REST, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent Payments Protocol, or Agent2Agent protocols, with a merchant-required customer interaction when appropriate. An agent-originated order is therefore a channel to monitor, not automatic proof of fraud.
| Observed behavior | Likely objective | Best first control | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Many carts or orders appear immediately after a product launch | Inventory hoarding or auto-checkout | Scheduled Plus bot protection and launch controls | Timestamp, product, checkout completion rate, queue impact |
| Repeated low-value attempts with declines | Card testing | Payment-provider fraud rules and order-risk review | Decline codes, payment fingerprint, email and address reuse |
| Orders share proxy indicators or unusual geography | Account or payment abuse | Risk scoring, manual hold, fulfillment pause | Proxy signal, account age, IP and device data where lawfully available |
| Contact, comment, or account forms receive bursts of submissions | Spam or account creation | Verify hCaptcha and remove unused apps | Request times, form endpoint, account-creation volume |
| Authenticated agent requests ask for a payment challenge or unusual change | Potentially legitimate agent checkout requiring review | Buyer handoff and explicit confirmation | Protocol, channel, escalation state, customer confirmation |
Run a seven-step triage before blocking anything
- Export the affected orders and sessions. Compare timestamps, products, quantities, customer accounts, shipping addresses, billing addresses, emails, payment outcomes, and fulfillment status. A burst around a launch points to inventory automation; a steady stream of tiny attempts with declines points to card testing.
- Look for reuse and clustering. Group attempts by address, email domain or local-part pattern, payment fingerprint supplied by your provider, device or proxy indicators, and account age. Reuse across otherwise unrelated customers is a useful signal, but do not cancel solely on a shared household, workplace, or carrier network.
- Check traffic analytics against order data. A sudden session spike without a corresponding rise in completed, paid orders suggests scraping, queue inflation, or failed automation. A spike in completed orders followed by chargebacks requires payment-risk action, not just a CAPTCHA.
- Review declines and chargebacks. Record the reason returned by your payment provider, the time between attempts, and whether the same customer later succeeds after a challenge. Keep this information with the order so staff do not make decisions from a single signal.
- Determine the sales channel. Separate Online Store sessions from orders created through an app, marketplace, or AI channel. Channel attribution changes which controls are available and what customer data was exchanged.
- Place suspicious orders on hold. Stop fulfillment while a trained reviewer checks the evidence. Do not ship an order merely because payment was initially authorized; authorization can still be followed by a dispute.
- Document the decision. Record the indicators, action, reviewer, and outcome. This creates a feedback loop for risk rules and lets you measure false positives instead of relying on anecdote.
Harden the storefront on every Shopify plan
Verify hCaptcha where Shopify provides it
Shopify says hCaptcha is active by default on contact, comment, and customer-account pages. Open each surface in an incognito session, submit a benign test, and confirm that the challenge appears when Shopify decides it is needed. If it is absent or broken, check theme customizations and app-generated forms before adding another CAPTCHA product. A challenge on a form does not by itself protect a payment endpoint.
Patch themes and apps
Update the published theme and every app that touches login, cart, checkout, discounts, inventory, or payment flows. Remove apps that are no longer used and revoke credentials for integrations no one maintains. Review recent changes when abuse begins: a permissive app proxy, an exposed storefront token, or a custom script can create an easier path than the native checkout.

Protect checkout without breaking accessibility
Use the least intrusive control that addresses the observed behavior. Silent risk scoring preserves conversion but may send more orders to manual review. CAPTCHA and buyer handoff add friction and can disadvantage customers using assistive technology or slower connections. Provide a clear retry path and a support contact when a legitimate customer is challenged.
Limit promotional mechanics that bots exploit
For scarce products, define quantity limits, one-per-customer rules, and a short, published sale window. Ensure the rule is enforced server-side or by Shopify’s checkout logic rather than only by hiding a button in the theme. Test discount codes, inventory reservations, and cancellation behavior with a staging or low-risk product before a public launch.
Shopify Plus bot protection for flash-sale launches
Shopify Plus merchants can ask Shopify Plus Support to activate scheduled bot protection. Shopify describes this feature as a fairness control that limits the effectiveness of auto-checkout bots; it is not a fraud solution.
| Plus protection setting | Shopify-documented scope |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Shopify Plus merchants only; activation is requested through Shopify Plus Support |
| Challenge technology | Shopify may use reCAPTCHA or hCaptcha |
| Product scope | All published products or up to 500 selected products |
| Event duration | Scheduled window of up to 60 minutes |
| Sales channel | Online Store only |
| Primary purpose | Reduce automated checkout during scarce-product events |
| Not covered | Fraud caused by bots, card testing, chargebacks, or abuse in other channels |
How to prepare the event
- Contact Shopify Plus Support before the launch and provide the date, start time, time zone, product scope, and expected traffic.
- Choose all published products or select no more than 500 products. Include variants that share the same scarce inventory.
- Schedule only the period that needs protection; the maximum event length is 60 minutes.
- Confirm that the launch is using the Online Store channel. Orders entering through another channel are outside this control.
- Tell customer-support staff what the challenge looks like and how a genuine buyer can retry or request help.
- After the sale, deactivate or allow the event to expire and compare prevented attempts, conversion, support contacts, and inventory availability.
Do not describe this feature to staff or customers as “fraud protection.” Shopify explicitly says it is intended only to limit auto-checkout bots and is not meant to combat fraud related to bot activity. Keep payment and order-risk controls active during the event.
Keep payment fraud controls separate from bot controls
Use provider signals and Shopify order risk
Payment providers can supply decline codes, velocity signals, card-country information, and dispute history. Combine those signals with Shopify’s order-risk indicators, address and email reuse, proxy evidence, and account history. A single failed payment is weak evidence; a coordinated sequence of failures followed by multiple successful authorizations is materially stronger.

Choose a review action for each risk level
- Low concern: authorize and fulfill normally while retaining the evidence used for the decision.
- Needs review: hold fulfillment, contact the customer through a verified channel, and request confirmation or additional authentication.
- High concern: cancel before fulfillment, block the relevant account or payment instrument through your provider, and preserve logs for dispute handling.
Automate decisions with the Order Risk API carefully
Shopify’s Order Risk API accepts an external score, a recommendation, a message, and a cause_cancel flag. Shopify’s example records an anonymous-proxy order with a score of 1.0 and a recommendation of cancel. Treat that example as an illustration of the fields, not a universal threshold: your provider, geography, product value, and chargeback tolerance determine the policy.
When you set cause_cancel, make sure staff understand that the order will not proceed automatically. Log the reason in plain language, include the provider’s evidence, and create an appeal route for a legitimate customer. Review canceled orders later for false positives and adjust the rule rather than adding more overlapping blocks.
Gate agentic checkout instead of banning every agent
Understand the supported paths
Shopify states that UCP lets an agent complete checkout on a customer’s behalf through REST, MCP, Agent Payments Protocol, or Agent2Agent protocols, with customer interaction when a merchant requires it. The increase in AI-originated traffic makes channel-level observability important: record which protocol or integration created the session and whether the customer confirmed the final purchase.
Checkout MCP states and actions
Checkout MCP creates an authenticated checkout session with create_checkout, get_checkout, update_checkout, complete_checkout, and cancel_checkout. A response can enter a requires_escalation state. That state hands the buyer to the merchant storefront for a review, login, payment challenge, or another required step before completion.
Require escalation for payment-method changes, shipping-address changes, high-value orders, unusually large quantities, or any signal that your risk policy marks for review. Do not let an agent retry a failed payment indefinitely; cap attempts and send the buyer to a human-readable recovery page.

Browser-based Checkout WebMCP
Checkout WebMCP operates on the checkout already open in the buyer’s browser tab and places the order after the buyer confirms it. Preserve that confirmation. A backend request that skips the visible confirmation should be treated as a different risk path and authenticated accordingly.
Review data sharing and permissions
Shopify warns that direct-checkout orders originating in AI channels share the customer’s name, address, and order details with that AI channel. Audit the channel’s permissions, retention, and handling of personal data. Request only the scopes required for the integration, rotate credentials, and tell customers when a handoff sends them to an external agent interface. Confirmation should be explicit, especially when the agent changes quantity, shipping speed, or payment method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical flash-sale runbook
Before the launch
- Define the product and variant limits, sale window, cancellation policy, and support escalation path.
- Update the theme and apps; remove unused scripts and verify hCaptcha on account and form surfaces.
- Ask Shopify Plus Support to schedule protection if you are a Plus merchant, selecting the correct products and a window no longer than 60 minutes.
- Configure payment-provider velocity and decline handling, then test the Order Risk API recommendation and cancellation path on a non-production order.
- Confirm inventory, discount, shipping, and tax behavior under a realistic load test that does not target production customers.
- Brief staff on the difference between a checkout challenge, a payment-risk hold, and a canceled order.
During the launch
- Watch sessions, carts, checkout starts, successful payments, declines, and cancellations together rather than relying on a single dashboard.
- Compare the rate of low-value attempts and repeated addresses with the legitimate conversion rate.
- Keep a queue of held orders and review the oldest high-value cases first.
- Do not widen blocks in response to one noisy IP range; check whether shared networks or mobile carriers explain the traffic.
- Escalate agent sessions that request payment challenges or unusual order changes to the buyer handoff.
After the launch
- End the scheduled protection event when the sale window closes or the traffic pattern normalizes.
- Reconcile inventory reservations, paid orders, cancellations, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Measure prevented bot checkouts, false positives, conversion, support contacts, chargebacks, and inventory availability.
- Save representative logs and update risk rules based on confirmed outcomes, not assumptions about automation.
Diagnose common failure modes
“CAPTCHA is enabled, but card testing continues.”
CAPTCHA protects selected forms and can slow automation; it does not decide whether an authorized payment is fraudulent. Add provider velocity rules, order-risk scoring, and fulfillment holds. Inspect low-value declines and repeated payment instruments.
“Plus protection did not stop orders from an app or AI channel.”
The scheduled feature applies to the Online Store channel only. Identify the channel that created the order, then secure that integration with authentication, permission review, buyer confirmation, and its own risk controls.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“Legitimate customers are being blocked.”
Check whether a broad IP, geography, or email rule is catching shared networks or corporate buyers. Replace blanket denial with a challenge or requires_escalation handoff, and measure the appeal outcome.
Best Value
“Inventory is still unavailable even though bots were challenged.”
Review reservation timeouts, cart limits, overselling settings, and app behavior. A challenge reduces automated completion but does not automatically release every abandoned reservation.
“An agent completed checkout without the customer noticing.”
Require authenticated requests and explicit confirmation before complete_checkout. For payment, address, quantity, or shipping changes, return requires_escalation and send the buyer to the storefront for review.
What to measure every week
Create a dashboard that joins traffic, checkout, payment, and fulfillment data. Track the following separately for human, app, and agent-originated sessions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Checkout starts, completion rate, challenge rate, and abandonment after a challenge.
- Orders canceled by risk rules, orders held for review, and the percentage later released.
- Payment declines, authorization reversals, refunds, and chargebacks.
- Repeated addresses, emails, payment fingerprints, proxy indicators, and account age distributions.
- Inventory reserved, sold, released, and unavailable during a launch.
- Customer-support contacts about blocked checkouts or unexpected agent actions.
- AI-channel traffic, confirmation rate, escalation rate, and order value.
Use these measures to tune friction. A control that prevents bots but cuts legitimate conversion or creates a large support burden may need a narrower scope, shorter duration, or an escalation path rather than a stronger block.
Bottom line
Classify the behavior first. Use Shopify Plus’s scheduled protection for short, Online Store flash-sale events; use hCaptcha and maintained storefront code to reduce form and account automation; and use payment-provider signals, Shopify order-risk data, manual holds, and the Order Risk API for card testing and fraudulent orders. For agentic commerce, authenticate the channel, require buyer confirmation and escalation for sensitive changes, and review what customer data the channel receives. This layered approach blocks unauthorized automation while preserving the legitimate AI-assisted purchases that are becoming a larger part of Shopify traffic.
